That's a Union City Transit bus, not an ACTransit bus (which serves Berkeley. Union City is over 20 miles south of Berkeley, and is closer to Silicon Valley than to Berkeley.

"these caravans of propriety, of social mores too foreign for our contemporary eyes,"

Huh? Haven't this writer heard of the separate beaches for Muslim men and women and seen some of the Muslim bathing outfits for women?

My husband is the talker. He havers, while I want to chill out, watch some TV or play some video games. He, however, drinks beer, while I don't.

The trouble with these studies and articles is the generalizations that result. The original study probably had those results in a majority of the couples studied, who may have volunteered to participate based on an ad that was pointed toward women whose husbands don't communicate well. And how large was the majority?

While the results of the study may be generally correct, applying them in a strictly female-talk/male-doesn't way undercuts the variety of people and relationships.

Classic joke: "The Irish gave the Scots the bagpipe, and the Scots still haven't gotten the joke."

Bagpipes were common instruments in all parts of Europe at various times.

He sounds more like those FLDS and other old school Mormons than Muslim. The whole idea that he is a prophet, that God is the one ordering the marriages, and that he has special powers, gifts and permissions from God sounds just like those polygamous Mormon cults.

I would really like to know where he's getting his money from.

I miss Webvan. It was so nice to have someone else haul my groceries upstairs, as well as do the shopping. I would have paid for delivery to keep the service going.

All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.

@notfromconcentrate, compare the shoppers at a Walmart to the shoppers at Target. Night and day.

Benjamin Franklin said that democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.

@Rectify made eloquently clear all the reasons for the checks and balances, but it's really very simply: the rule of the majority, but with protections for the minority.

Just because you are a minority does not mean you lose. It is supposed to mean that you are still protected under the law. "Equal protection under the law" is supposed to mean something, and finally it is starting to for this part of our population.

It sounds like the owners waffled and did not make clear to Ms. Fearnall exactly what the consequences would be. Their mistake. Now, public opinion has come slamming down on them and they're hurting for it. They made a decision. Apparently, legally, they had a right to make it, but it seems to be a poor one, and they're paying the price.

BTW, my mother-in-law has been through three bouts of cancer. Before chemo, she bought two wigs and some turbans. She never wore the wigs. When you don't have hair, wigs are very uncomfortable and difficult to wear. She wore turbans until her hair came in about an inch, then just let it show.
