Persephone's Comments

Having now read the article, I agree with it wholeheartedly. Why is the F-word so horrible? Please, kids hear it everyday somewhere, probably from their own parents. Violence is glorified and good and given a lower rating, while sex is evil and given a higher rating. What is wrong here? Sex is a natural biological requirement of life. While violence does occur as part of life, it's not a necessity.

Are all the members of the MPAA so old that once they can't get it up anymore they can only revel in excessive abuse and bloodshed?

Those parents would have brought the babies anyway, because they would figure the babies wouldn't understand what they were seeing. Later on, when the darlings are having screaming night terrors and the parents aren't getting any sleep for months, they'll blame it on the Tom and Jerry cartoons.

Okay, no way did she not know something was not normal. She was not obese, a little heavy, possibly related to the pregnancy, but it was definitely a heavy case of denial. Her periods would have stopped, there would have been other physical changes to her body (there are so many, some of them happen to every woman), the baby had to have moved, and she was young, so there was no thought of her being menopausal.

It's good the baby appears healthy. I'm sad that this baby probably has a very poor future, with a single, teenage mother who refused to face the fact of her situation, and will probably now refuse to face the facts of what is really required to raise a healthy, happy child.

As usual, psychos from boths sides come out of the woodwork. "She must be selfish, abnormal and stupid because she doesn't want kids." "Everyone who has kids must be selfish, abnormal and stupid."

Here's the situation: there are too many people on the Earth. Our population is using the Earth's resources at the rate of 1.6 Earths. It's completely unsustainable. So, no there isn't enough to go around.

A lot of people are having too many children. We are living too long and too many children are surviving to adulthood. Global warming or not, we are using up this planet.

China's been doing the 1 child thing for years with limited success. Unless the entire world does it, nothing is going to change. Within the next few decades, disease, famine and drought is poised to do what the lack of birth control has not done, take this planet's population to a manageable level.

When your children are starving, what will you tell them? "Oh, honey, I just had to have a baby, because I didn't want to be selfish."

Didn't they tell you? Sex is only for making babies, not for fun. Enjoying it is wrong, wrong, wrong. Masturbation is a sin.

But since I live in a blue state, where's my Good Vibrations catalog?

Unfortunately, many of the rules are not known until after you move in, and once you've paid for a house you can't just move out.

It is ridiculous that they are completely banning hanging laundry outside to dry. I can understand limiting where it is hung, even the hours it can be hung, even saying no undergarments, but to force someone to burn energy to dry clothes is ridiculous.

I have a friend who's condo association only allows white curtains in the windows and no window air conditioners or fans, although there is no built-in air conditioning in the buildings. She's on the third floor and is miserable in the summer. Personally, I would have warned the homeowner's association of the dangers of the health risks they are inflicting on people by not allowing window fans or air conditioners and light blocking curtains. Some of these rules are completely ridiculous.

The problem I see is that capitalism is not perfect, it is not a level playing field, it never will be. Humans are preferential animals, preferring the company of those similar to themselves, which is why there are laws against discrimination based on race, sex, religion, etc. This is the reason many necessary services continue to be handled by government agencies, so that the risk of discrimination, for whatever reason, is limited. Before you start, it doesn't work perfectly, once again, humans aren't perfect, but everyone has the right to vote, while only a few have the money to buy these services outright.

Right now, due to the uneven and unfair tax cuts favoring the wealthy in our society, the wealthy can afford even more of these private services. We should have learned by now that trickle down does not work. It didn't work 20 years ago; it will never work. If these homeowners were paying their fair share of taxes, there would have been a lot more money for the fire services that would have benefited all the citizens, not just the wealthy.

Blackwater is an excellent example. Because they do not answer to government oversight and regulation in the same way as our troops, they easily abuse and murder and are creating a situation that is putting our troops at risk. Compare it to the LAPD.

Starting in the 70s, when the LAPD was being turned into a quasi-military organization due to the city government's failing to maintain its control, it only worsened violence. Removing the beat cops and replacing them with armored officers in armored cars created a schism that will never be fixed. If the city government had properly watched over the force, preventing the discrimination that inevitably followed, it's possible that the gang activity that has since spread throughout the country could have been slowed significantly and/or limited.

Privatizing fire services could result in firefighters who simply do not answer calls in neighborhoods they prefer to avoid. What will happen? Someone could sue them, maybe, if there's a lawyer willing to take the case on contingency in the hope of deep pockets. What if there aren't deep pockets? What is the company simply denies everything and stymies the case in court for years? And it won't bring back the dead.
