They're all making the same mistake. They watch the ruler instead of the hand that is dropping it. The muscles will begin to move many ms before the ruler.

When I worked in an auto parts store, I noticed that about half of the mechanics signed invoices with their left hand. There is some correlation between left handedness and mechanical aptitude.
