What I noticed was that the soldier was more interested in hugging the
cat than his wife. There's a story there somewhere.

The U.S. Mint has a huge amount of comemorative medals celebrating the code talkers. I have one of the 3 inch bronze ones of the Navaho code talkers that I bought from them some years ago.

12/15 also which was pretty amazing considering I had no idea what I was doing. Had 10 in a row right and then 3 wrong ones in a row.

Reminds me of when I was stationed in Naples Italy many years ago. The key was to watch the vehicles out of the corner of your eye. Then just step out into the traffic. If a driver makes eye contact they will not stop. First few times were fairly tough on the nerves but it got real easy after some practice. The drivers always stopped just in time with no horns blaring. That in itself was strange for Neapolitans! GGG

Actually German U-boats got a LOT closer than 70 miles. Folks would watch ships being sunk off the East coast by U-boats quite often. One can see approximately 3 miles out to sea if standing on ground that is at sea level. Naturally the higher up you go the further away you can see. It's still a lot less than the reported 70 miles. There's even a report of a U-boat making it into New York Harbor. This doesn't include the German spies that came ashore in NJ and FL from rubber rafts launched from U-boats.

In Jan 1970 the USS Yancey (AKA-93) dragged her anchors and allided with the Chesappeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and knocked it out of alignment. Bridge was out of commission for several weeks. Don't know what happened to the ship's skipper but he should have been Courts Martialed. When at anchor regular bearings are supposed to be taken by the bridge watch to make sure she isn't dragging her anchors. I used to love driving the CBBT. Was great to be heading into a tunnel just as a ship was sailing over it.
(What a neat word allided is. I've got a lot of time at sea and never heard it before. That's a good thing in retrospect. Have always been interested in nautical terminology.)

I didn't read the article but I want to point out if Bond shot at anyone with the gun he is holding he wouldn't kill any one. It's a Walther model 53 air pistol. It's a single shot .177 cal pellet gun! I still laugh whenever I see any photos of him holding it. What a farce. My father bought the same gun (S/N 012915) for me in 1956 when he was stationed in Heidelberg Germany in the U.S. Army.
(at least they used a Walther but it's a far cry from a PPK)

Alex that was really BAD. Didn't settle it since no egg was involved. Interesting coloring on the chick though.

Ummmmmmm, a "church key" is a can opener not a bottle opener. Granted most church keys have a bottle opener on the opposite end they are usually thought of as can openers. BTW I've had a P-38 on my key ring for ages but that's another matter.

What a terrific story. Thanks John! I'm quite a fan of the USAAF and RAF reciprocating engine war birds.
