Wild guess: a previous land owner was drilling pilot holes looking for water. This one was dry so they capped it with a metal plate and a few inches of soil. Over time the plate slipped and fell into the hole, allowing the earth above to crumble. The current owner might want to get a metal detector and see if there are other similarly capped but unfilled holes so they can be made safe.

I almost received a zero for cheating in 11th grade English. If the teacher thought there was cheating going on, it was her policy to give zeros to both students since she couldn't know who copied off of who. In my case the girl behind me copied my answers but didn't know that I make up crazy answers if I don't know the correct one. It became obvious that she was the one doing the copying when my usual wise guy answers like "the milkman" or "Ronald Reagan" were used for questions about who wrote particular poems.

It did bug me a bit that I almost received a zero when I wasn't cheating nor helping the cheater cheat but in the end it was simply too funny to be upset.

It would be much more interesting to see what actual actions people in each generation take rather than trusting what goals they claim to want to achieve. Perhaps some generations are more honest or more in touch with what they really want.

Technically I'd say yes he is homeless but a huge part of the experience for a homeless person is the despair that comes from feeling powerless to control your situation. Shane can go get a roof over his head any time he wants.

Somewhat related to this are what I call the "urban outdoorsmen" who are those who aren't suffering from a mental or physical issue that prevents them from obtaining regular housing but rather have decided that they don't want to be part of mainstream society. They tend to wander from town to town and are quite able to work odd jobs when they need some cash. They also rarely smell like bodily waste and are able to hold somewhat reasonable conversation.

At first glance everyone living on the streets may appear to be the same but there are quite a few different subcultures out there. Perhaps Shane is part of a new one starting.

"over six weeks of growth with no trimming"

Sounds like the issue isn't with beards it's with unkempt facial hair. Try the experiment again but with men that actually groom their beards. Bet you get a different outcome.

There are lots of factors. Two that I think are often overlooked are for profit universities and experience expectations of students.

For profit schools have exploded, probably mostly because of the ease of obtaining federal aid that Chuck mentioned. Their much higher tuitions have created breathing room for public universities to charge more. Traditionally universities mostly marketed themselves through alumni, word of mouth, and direct mail to potential students who had expressed an interest in the school. The for profit schools have changed all of that, using all of tricks in the Madison Avenue playbook. It's shocking how many students will enroll in a low quality program at a for profit school when they could enroll in the same program at a reasonable quality public university near by for a fraction of the cost. The public universities are simply not use to using slick tv advertising and psychological research to market themselves.

Student expectations are also a factor. The quality of accomidations, of classroom space, and of recreational activities have become sort of an arms race between schools. Some times this is with the explicit help of the student body. The students at Georgia State University recently voted to increase their manditory fees by hundreds of dollars so they could have a football team. For BCS schools football can bring in lots of money but for a school like GSU it's money students could have used to pay for rent or groceries. But the students wanted a football team and voted that everyone attending GSU would have to pay for that luxury. This of course didn't stop many of the same students from joining the Occupy movement and shouting about the high cost of college.

Speaking of sports, they can have a bad effect on student choice. Some states such as California push really hard for students to go to a community college or a two year school to take their core classes at much lower expense than a large flagship university. But in parts of the country where kids swear allegiance to a college team around the time they learn to walk, the thought of attending a different school, even if just for a year or two, is unacceptable. They've waited a long time to get student football/basketball tickets and they want to have them all four years they're in college.

As long as these factors continue, we're going to see costs increase.

In Florida having sex with your daughter is legal as long as she isn't your biological daughter or a minor. Some other states don't make a distinction and it would be illegal there. Wonder what happens if they go on vacation to one of those states.

If this was her only trouble during ten years with the company, it was dumb to let her go but I understand why it is against the rules. If it wasn't, unethical managers would play the old "I didn't tell them to work off the clock, they did it on their own" game, favoring employees who do work off the clock and giving poor reviews and the worst tasks to those who do not.

Thorfin, http://www.voltaicsystems.com/ I've never used them but when I was hiking Kilimanjaro there were a couple of people who had them to keep their iphones powered up. I thought it was silly but there actually is a cell signal at the summit and people like to call home while severely oxygen deprived.
