Church,

If you're in avalanche territory, you carry a shovel, probe, and beacon just like you wear a seat belt in a car. A slide is unpredictable even with proper training and precautions. And, no, they're not repurposed entrenchment tools, they're collapsable avalanche shovels that are designed for this sort of thing (compact, hollow handle for the avalanche probes, fits perfectly in your pack's straps).

So yes, an avalanche is a known possibility in these areas and conditions, what's the big deal?

I don't remember having an allowance at all. I delivered newspapers for money when I was younger and started washing dishes in a restaurant when I was 14. My parents couldn't afford to give me an allowance so I had to learn the value of money early. On the up side, I had lots of practice managing my money by the time I went to university.

I don't hate any of those cities so I wouldn't inflict any of them with the Olympics. I in Whistler and the 2010 Olympics are already costing us more than they were supposed to and they're just going to screw over my town when they're here.

@tt,

Note the "in past centuries" part. Refrigeration, pasteurization, and related technologies are fairly recent innovations. In past centuries, juice would quickly become wine all by itself.

Smells like a moral panic to me and moral panics are usually a simple way to grab power (or distract people so you can grab more power). I wonder if these "alcohol related problems" are anything like all the Americans in addiction programs for marijuana.

@mother hubbard,

The filthy mouths and downright meanness of the godly is amazing, I thought your faith was supposed to make you a better person.

That said, your implied "god did it" explanation is childish, foolish, and not even an explanation of anything.

The "Coming Collapse of the Middle Class" talk from Elizabeth Warren (from the Harvard Law School) might give everyone a bit more information to chew on:

If you make the job specs ambiguous enough then you can hire the person/friend/crony that you're creating the job for, then no one can call you corrupt for it. Or maybe I'm just cynical.
