@ Mr. Stranger - There are women today that are practicing foot binding. It was a documentary on "bizarre" fetishes. The one woman crawled everywhere around her house after she unwrapped her feet for the day. Another part of the documentary was about people who would purposefully undergo surgery for limb amputation.
My mother taught me this maybe circa 1976, when I noticed a polaroid of toast sitting in the dangerous sharp implements drawer. I again was taught this "trick" when I was in home-ec class in the mid 80's. I think there has been innovation in home appliances that you would not need to do this with a new range/oven. Maybe anything pre 90's though.
