I think the goal here is to increase the amount of room available for the premium seats which are how Airlines make their bread and butter. If they can compact the current number of coach flyers into less space then they can increase the number of premium spots which they can sell for 5-10 times the price of that coach ticket. So in the name of luxury the plebs get to stand. I doubt that we'll see a cut in costs for flying and these types of seats also would increase demand for overhead bin space meaning more charges for bring luggage because of limited overhead space. More checked bags means more money.
