Global Flight Paths

Man, that's a lot of frequent flyer miles! Canadian transportation planner Michael Markieta who works at engineering firm Arup in Toronto as a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) consultant, crunched the data of more than 58,000 global flight paths and visualized them in these fantastic images: Link

Markieta used data from openflights.org and explained how he did it in this post from his blog Spatial Analysis.

(L) Flight paths across Africa. The shape of the continent is immediately recognizable from the coastal cities. (R) Flight paths across Europe. The busiest airport in Europe is Frankfurt International in Germany, which has 235 direct flights.

I almost had this happen to me. I mindlessly dropped some batteries in to the wrong pocket where my keys were. Fortunately in less than a minute my wife needed to borrow my keys. The keys and the batteries were blazing hot. Now I don't ever put batteries in any pockets.
