The Best Saturday Night Live Cast Member

Saturday Night Live has been running for 47 years now. The regular cast turns over every few years to feature a new generation of up and coming comedians. You'll find a list of 159 of them here. Who your favorite is likely depends on your age, whether you prefer John Belushi, Al Franken, Eddie Murphy, Phil Hartman, Chris Farley, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Leslie Jones, or Kate McKinnon.

On Friday, Joe Manniello launched a tournament to determine the best SNL cast member, with a bracket of 64 contenders. The replies to that Tweet have a lot of people filling out the entire bracket, but there is actual voting going on, which you can participate in by using the #snlcastbracket hashtag to find the polls. Voting is still in the first round, so there are inevitable blowouts.

Elsewhere on Twitter, Eric Alper asked, "Who is the best SNL cast member of all time?" The replies in that thread are brimming with videos and gifs of classic skits featuring favorite cast members, so there is plenty to browse and relive the memories.

Which cast member is your favorite?

I've watched snl since it started and this season has way too many players, IMO. It's hard enough for a cast of 7 or 12 even, to get any air time. It just feels like no one is really getting much air time except for Pete Davidson and I'm really not seeing his appeal on the show. I think the writing and sketches are very poor, no laughs, little interesting content. To be real, I must admit that this is the first time I have ever felt they should just cancel the show. That's how disappointing the show is to me.

I don't disagree, at all. We've been fed only the best of the 70s for 40 years, and it's easy to forget that a ton of material back then felt half-baked, and fell really flat. The 90s still has a bit of that mischievous, rebellious side of the early years, but with much of the polish of the modern era.

Maybe it's my age but I don't think 70s/80s SNL is nearly as funny as 90s. Who did more consistently funny content than Will Ferrel, David Spade, Tim Meadows, Mike Meyers, Dana Carvey, Adam Sandler, or Norm Macdonald? Don't get me wrong - Eddie Murphy, Chevy Chase, Dan Ackroyd, Bill Murray outside of SNL, through your movies? Genius. It just doesn't feel like the strongest time of SNL.
