Cigarette Butts: The Most Littered Item in the World

Though plastic waste is arguably one of the most pressing environmental concerns today, there are other types of waste to which we should also give our attention. Like cigarette butts.

Here where I live, when you walk down the streets, whether it's early in the morning or late in the night, especially around busy districts, you will see a lot of cigarette butts on the ground. There aren't a lot of plastic bags, bottles, or cans, but cigarette butts abound. And well, there are a lot of consequences for that too.

My parents' social group had Vegas Nights in our basement to raise funds. There were food, drinks, and penny-ante gambling. The next day, we'd be cleaning up and find the occasional cig butt on the the floor. Smoking is a drug addiction. For the smoker, the only thing that matters is having cigs and smoking them. Where do the butts go? "Who knows, who cares?"

It is also the most dangerous of all trash people toss out of their car. Not even drug needles compare to the devastation and death caused by fires from cigarette butts.

For years we lived on a street corner with a stop light. Smokers who were stopped would toss their butts out the window onto the space between the road and sidewalk. I had to "police" the area and clean them up. Annoying.
