Little Girl Without Feet Receives Puppy Without a Paw

A three-year-old girl born without hands and feet due to a birth defect now has a special new friend, thanks to the forethought and generosity of a South Carolina dog breeder.

Though her family lives in Tennessee, Sapphyre Johnson has been a patient at Shriner's Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina since she was an infant. Greenville dog breeder Karen Riddle contacted the hospital asking whether they knew of any patients who could benefit from a puppy born without a paw. Though other breeders had advised Riddle to put the puppy down, she felt he was special and had a purpose. The hospital staff paired the white German Shepherd pup, named Lieutenant Dan after the character in Forrest Gump, with Sapphyre and her family. It's been a wonderful match.

While trying to find a patient who would appreciate Lieutenant Dan, hospital employee Elaine Hardin showed a picture of him to Sapphyre. The little girl became animated. Hardin said,

"She said,  'That’s my puppy. He’s just like me.’ He’s a special dog and he’s going to a special child.”

Father and Daughter Find Fox Den Full of Pups on Their Property

Philip Wang owns a home in Princeton, New Jersey on seven acres of property. One day while walking with his daughter Alice, he discovered a fox den and the adorable fox pups pictured here. Philip took these wonderful photos of the litter, which show them at their fuzzy wuzzy, cuddly and inquisitive best.

Now that the babies' eyes have opened and they're alert and exploring their surroundings, they are likely being taught by their elders to hunt. Foxes' first hunting lesson is generally for small rodents, which they catch with a characteristic high jump and pounce. Typically they do their hunting at night.

How fortunate for the Wang family. There's nothing like a zoology lesson in your backyard, particularly one at this magnitude of cute.

See more pictures of the baby fox siblings here.

"My kid can't eat this because of this single bell pepper" | Image: @Shellyyelnats on Instagram

What crazy reasons have your kids given you for rejecting foods served to them at meal or snacktime? The reason for the veto might make perfect sense to their little brains, but it can cause parents the occasional frustrated moment, having just taken time to prepare the food.

The Instagram account "My Kid Can't Eat This" highlights the funny side of the situation, presenting photos of the rejected foods with the accompanying excuses. Check it out for a laugh, or to see that you're not alone having a child in the picky eater's roundtable. -Via Pleated Jeans

Agoraphobic Woman Leaves Home for Third Time in Ten Years, Falls Down Manhole

Image: Mel Clark

A woman suffering from agoraphobia who only left her house twice in ten years found that the third time out definitely wasn't the charm. The 57-year-old woman from Britain who, oddly enough, is named Janet Faal, left home as part of her therapy and fell down a manhole shortly afterward.

According to The Daily Mail, Faal left home in an attempt to help her friend move a pallet that was blocking her car. Once she moved the pallet, Faal plummeted down the open manhole, leaving her with two black eyes and a broken leg. She then waited an hour for paramedics to rescue her from the dark, cramped cavity. Faal said,

"I took a step over – never in my life did I think there was a hole underneath, I thought it had just fallen over. The next thing I remember is the pain. It was awful. I fell and smashed my face on the pallet, and I was in the hole with blood all over me and I couldn’t move."

Five Vintage Appliances That Could Have Killed You

A number of older adults reminisce about "back in the day," when kids went outside for hours getting real exercise instead of smart phone finger workouts. Yet there were definitely some drawbacks to those halcyon days. One little peccadillo of the times was a hazardous substance or ten used in manufacturing.

In this case, we're talking asbestos. Even the tiniest specks of asbestos cause a cancer called mesothelioma, and the blow dryers of old were full of the fibrous mineral. Popular manufacturers of hairdryers such as General Electric and Conair advertised the force of air that conveniently and quickly dried the hair of their customers. It also had the unadvertised bonus of asbestos particles continually being blown in their faces. Though a recall was issued in 1979, it was unsuccessful for the most part. Only an estimated three million of 18 million blowdryers were recovered.
