Turn Your Hybrid Car Into High Fashion Art

Posted by Zeon Santos in Art, Art & Design, Auto & Transportation, Fashion, Living, Pictures on December 2, 2011 at 1:38 am

Lexus claims that their new CT Hybrid is 90% recyclable, and they aim to prove it by having designers create fashion art pieces out of various car parts for “The Lexus Fashion Workshop”.

The pieces will be shown in the January 2012 issue of Vogue magazine, and there’s no word yet on whether the automotive fashion pieces will then be turned back into a car and driven away after the photo shoot. This line gives new meaning to the phrase “check out her headlights.”

Fashion In The Year 2000, According To The 1930s

Further proof that the future isn’t as cool, or cheesy according to your taste, as everyone thought it would be. The top fashion designers of the 1930s contributed their idea of 21st century fashion to this newsreel, and I for one am very glad that they were wrong about some things, or else men would dress like astronaut clowns and women would be wearing aluminum dresses!

Fantastically Elaborate Paper Dresses

Posted by Jill Harness in Art & Design, Crafts, Design, Fashion, Living on November 19, 2011 at 8:33 pm

It’s one thing to turn some delicate piece of paper into a small papercraft, but to make something as detailed and elaborate as a Victorian dress is a completely different matter entirely. Artist Susan Stockwell has been creating such incredible designs as the one above for over ten years.

Projects like this make me wish I was a better artist, but alas, I think the best hand-painted design I’d be able to come up with would be a smiley face. Oh well, at least us non-artist types can still appreciate looking at these awesome hand-painted Street Fighter shoes.

A Man’s Guide to A Woman’s Wardrobe

Posted by Alex in Fashion on September 10, 2011 at 10:06 am

Two years ago, Times reporter Luke Leitch's co-worker was on maternity leave and so he was asked to go on a mission worthy of a Force Recon Marine: cover a round of womenswear shows.

Luke returned (by the skin of his teeth, I'm sure) to provide the rest of mankind (the straight and male kind, obviously) with invaluable insight into a woman's wardrobe:

I have now spent two years embedded deep in female territory: in fashion, with a capital F. And I have started to get the hang of it. What has become clear is that fashion is to many women what sport is to many men: a pastime, a passion, a shared language, a form of self-definition, and a temporary escape from the opposite sex, all rolled into one deeply satisfying whole.

Most men regard this female passion from a default position of distrust, derision or at best patronising tolerance. Even the cleverest males are liable to take this line. Kant both derided and distrusted fashion: “[It] belongs under the heading of vanity…and also under the heading of folly.” Nietzsche preferred to patronise: “Comparing man and woman in general, one may say that woman would not have the genius for finery in general if she did not have the instinct for a secondary role.”

I very much doubt that either of these great chin-strokers spent any time contemplating the interior life of a woman via the interior of her wardrobe. Because men, when they think of women’s fashion at all, tend to see it only in terms of how it makes them feel—whether it arouses, confuses, or repels them—rather than considering what it makes a woman feel.

Did Pete & Pete Invent Hipsters?

Posted by Jill Harness in Entertainment, TV on August 12, 2011 at 10:56 pm

I love Pete & Pete, but this great MTV article has a lot of good points about how the show inspired one of the biggest trends of the last ten years. It makes sense too. After all, most of today’s hipsters grew up watching the show, sucking in its tacky fashions and deeper idiosyncrasies.

The Bernie Madoff Collection

Posted by Miss Cellania in Crime & Law, Fashion on August 11, 2011 at 9:37 am

Bernie Madoff is serving time in a federal prison for running the largest Ponzi scheme ever. The U.S. Marshals Service held an auction of Madoff’s possessions to recoup some of the losses. Frederick James designs bought some of Madoff’s clothing, which they have made into iPad cases. You could probably make one out of your own pants, but these come with a bit of notoriety …if that’s important to you. Link -via Everlasting Blort

Fashion It So

Posted by Miss Cellania in Blogs & Internet, Fashion, Science Fiction, TV on August 1, 2011 at 7:00 am

Now, here’s a blog on an extremely narrow subject that many will find fascinating. Fashion It So is all about the clothing and costumes seen on the TV series Star Trek: The Next Generation. Charlie and Anna are having a good time capturing screenshots and coming up with commentary on the fashions of the 23rd century. For example:

This episode opens up with Worf having trouble getting on his Starfleet formalwear:

You know, I think Worf probably could take a Mr. Universe pageant. And by take, I mean UTTERLY DESTROY IN THE FIELD OF BATTLE. In fact, why isn’t that part of the Mr. Universe pageant?

A Television You Can Wear

Dave Forbes created this 60″ LED tv coat that’s powered by a 12V battery. Unsurprisingly, he designed it specifically for use at the Burning Man festival.

Personally, I’d rather carry around a tablet or laptop so I could watch television myself, but I guess I’m just greedy like that.

8-Bit High Fashion

Where would you wear these pixelated pumps? See lots more pictures at Gamma Squad. Link
