Advancements in warfare and infantryman combat system have begun to blur the lines between war and science fiction. The United States Future Force Warrior program, for example, is bringing the power armor exoskeleton envisioned by Robert A. Heinlein in his novel Starship Troopers into reality. In this infographic above, Ross Crooks and Jason Lankow of Column Five Media imagined what soldier of the future would look like.

Actually, looks like the father of the Master Chief… just add in a bit of DNA manipulation of the soldier and we will be off to Halo/Pandora/insert Sci-Fi location here…

Lots of great technology: the soldier will know where he is, be able to move faster, lift heavier equipment, his commander will know where he is, he’ll know where he is and he’ll keep comfortable. But all that is useless unless he can take out the bad guys! One little weapon (possibly bullpup in design), small caliber (looks smaller than what we use now),no extra ammo, no grenades (unless the quad launcher in the gun is firing 15mm grenades). Lots of tech, but little battlefield power. Didn’t we learn that sometimes the guys in black pajamas with basic weapons beat us with all our tech?

An assortment of things taken from sci-fi books, movies, and games. I doubt we’ll see more than two of them implemented by 2010. (GPS and microphone, most likely.)

Soldiers are already using “exoskeleton” devices, particularly kneepads. Soccer-style shinguards are sometimes used, too.
