Custom Made Portal Heel Springs

These custom made heel springs, like the ones worn by the protagonist Chell in the Portal video game franchise, don't seem like a very useful creation in real life, but who needs function when the form is so cool, and they're an integral part of a wicked Chell costume? Scifi femme fatale prisoner cosplay FTW!

If only they actually allowed you to survive a long fall, like they do in the game, the creator Harrison Krix would become a very rich man indeed!

Strangers Have A Jam Session On The Subway

(YouTube Link)

New York is the kind of place where anything can happen at any moment, and although that comes with plenty of bad, this video shows that there are also many instances of spontaneous goodness going down, even on public transit.

These strangers on a train, who both happen to have their instruments with them, break out in a soulful song,  much to the delight of their fellow riders.

Whether this chance meeting was truly by chance or not ceases to be an issue once you watch them play, and feel that energy that seems to be in the air that New Yorkers breathe.

Lion King Meets The Dark Knight Rises Trailer

(YouTube Link)

Anticipation for the new Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises has spawned so many parodies and mashups that it seems like a new one is springing up every week. This one's all about the Lion King, though, and that makes it stand out from the rest in my opinion.

Watch as Simba's fate takes a turn for the worse, and laugh as voices from the movie trailer are cleverly synced to the mouth shapes of animated animals!

Hyperion Battlecruiser From Starcraft 2 Built Out Of LEGO

This amazing LEGO sculpture of a Hyperion Battlecruiser from the video game Starcraft 2 was made by Sven Jungo, who used over 15000 LEGO bricks to build the highly detailed starship and must throw his back out every time he tries to move this thing!

And where does he display this behemoth in his house? I hope Sven doesn't let any bratty little kids around this thing, because they might try to take it apart when no one's looking.

You can see more pics of this incredible LEGO masterpiece at the link below, including artwork from the game as a point of reference. LEGO builders-Sven has already set the bar high for 2012!

11 New Animal Species Discovered In 2011

When it comes to "discovering" new species of animals, I think it's more about having found where they've been hiding themselves from humanity and less about discovering brand new species.

I mean, most of the animals in this gallery look like the result of genetic evolution and adaptation, not some brand spanking new little critter.

But they are cute, and great fun to read about, considering that they're so rare to see in nature. So take a look at this gallery and see what the animal guides were missing up until last year.

A Preview Of Animated Features Being Released In 2012

(YouTube Link)

With the start of a new calendar year, movie studios have started rolling out teasers and previews for their upcoming features, to ensure that ticket sales are high.

Personally, I don't really care about the latest Hollywood blockbusters, and I prefer my features, and actors, to be animated. That's why this list of animated features being released in 2012 had me so excited, and most of them look like great fun!

But you don't have to take my word for it, peruse the titles for yourself at the link below, and sound off about which ones you're looking forward to watching on the big screen.

Beautiful Skyrim Cover Performed On Violin

(YouTube Link)

The soundtrack music for the video game Skyrim is quite beautiful already, but when Jason Yang and his violin play the songs they become a thing of ethereal beauty.

We've been seeing a lot of this type of video game and orchestral/classical music crossover (Final Fantasy orchestra, Legend of Zelda orchestra, etc.), and I'm sure that game soundtracks will continue to inspire musicians of all kinds to perform their own interpretations of these songs.

Raiders Of The Lost Archives-A Comparison

(YouTube Link)

This eye opening, and beautifully edited, video shows a shot-by-shot comparison of Raiders of the Lost Ark and 31 other films made between 1919 and 1973.

To say that there are a few similarities would be an understatement, so obviously this is due to Spielberg doing his homework, right? *wink*

If you've seen this before, good for you! Enjoy it again, why don't you?

Over 300 Pounds Of Caviar Found In Russian Morgue

Russian authorities made a fishy discovery this week, when a whopping 385 pounds of caviar was found stashed in a hospital morgue refrigerator.

The employees who were arrested for stashing the stuff claim that it was being reserved for a staff New Years party. Here's why the St. Petersburg police were after the caviar:

Most of the red caviar was from salmon, but 38 kilograms (84 pounds) of the stash was black caviar from sturgeon, an endangered fish. Amid heavy restrictions on sturgeon fishing, black caviar is increasingly produced and sold illegally.

A day after the morgue discovery, St. Petersburg police said they seized an additional 100 kilograms (220 pounds) intended for illegal sale at local markets.

On Friday, the Interfax news agency reported that border guards in the eastern Ukraine city of Kharkiv confiscated 249 cans of caviar worth almost $22,000 that was allegedly being smuggled from Russia to Ukraine.

In the far eastern region of Khabarovsk, a vehicle inspection turned up 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds) of caviar, leading police on a weeklong investigation, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported. They raided a village home on Friday and found another 26 kilograms (57 pounds).

At two different spots along the Amur River basin, police found 47 sturgeon carcasses and 2.5 tons of live sturgeon. Sturgeon fishing in the Amur basin is prohibited.

Apparently, the war on drugs in Russia includes battling the sale of illegal caviar. I wonder if they have dogs trained to sniff out the fishy stuff?

SwapNote Is Turned Into An Old School RPG

(YouTube Link)

One of the great things about this hi-tech world we live in is the fact that most software applications have a multitude of other uses that have yet to be discovered, and even the programmers that created the software don't know the full extent of what their software can do.

Case in point-this mod of SwapNote, a Nintendo 3DS chatting program that was modded by game design student Ben Gray and turned into a fully customizable text based roleplaying game.

Ben's hacked version is so cool that each session can be custom created, and Ben even created a Dungeon Master template, to help with encounters and map creation. Dungeons and Dragons for the portable gaming crowd, now that's an innovation I can get behind!

A Gravity Defying Series Of Photographs

It's hard to make heads or tails of these photos, because photographer Philippe Ramette has manipulated them to create an uneasy sense of gravity defiance.

They provoke a feeling of vertigo in some viewers, and your mind will race to separate the elements of the photo and make sense of which way is up.

I really enjoy the clever way in which the people are worked into each scene, and how they often seem to be hanging out on the edge of nowhere.

Want A New Tattoo? Let These 8 Year Old Twins Ink You Up!

(YouTube Link)

When the proud father of 8 year old twins Eloy and Oraibi wanted a new tattoo, he didn't get all liquored up and head to a parlor down by the docks. Instead, he let his kids take a crack at inking up their old man, and from the looks of it they had a blast!

Isaiah Toothtaker has been a professional tattoo artist for around 10 years, and he's apparently decided to pass the tradition on to his little ones.

The results, as expected, are a bit shaky and very painful. I just hope his kids don't take to covering themselves up with ink at such an early age.

(NSFW for one moment, when Isaiah curses due to the pain).
