Awesome Free-Floating Wooden Skateboard Ramp

(Images via Myles McGuinness)

Taking a spin on this free-floating skateboard ramp is not only more thrilling than busting smith grinds at your local skate park, it's also more dangerous, which is why it's floating atop Lake Tahoe and not on the open sea.

This wooden skate ramp barge is the brainchild of pro skater Bob Burnquist, who decided long ago that regular ramps and half pipes were far too boring, so he collaborated with builders Jerry Blohm and Jeff King to create a ramp covered raft any skateboarding castaway would be proud to call home.

Go Paint Alice - The Artwork Of Grace Slick

Decades after she told us all to go ask Alice and feed our heads as the singer for seminal rock band Jefferson Airplane, Grace Slick still had white rabbits and whimsical images of Wonderland dancing around in her head, so she began creating artwork based on Alice and her otherworldly adventures.

Grace started her foray into visual art after retiring from music in 1988, stating that she'd always loved drawing and painting but couldn't devote enough time and energy to art while performing and touring.

Her works aren't confined to the world of Wonderland, but so far the pieces which feature Alice, the White Rabbit and other denizens of Wonderland are her best sellers.

Springtime Has Sprung In This Classic Happy Harmonies Short

(Video Link)

Spring has sprung once again, at least in some parts of the world, but have you ever wondered about the forces at work behind the scenes? Who is responsible for turning back the sheets of snow and revealing all that green beneath?

The classic MGM Happy Harmonies animated short To Spring attempts to answer these pressing questions about springtime, and what the animators uncovered may surprise you.

It turns out we have a bunch of underground dwelling elves to thank for the warming weather conditions and new growth, but if they don't work hard enough the winter chill will march on. Works for me!

High Tech Battle Armor For Weapon Based Combat Sports

(Video Link)

As combat sports continue to grow in popularity, and MMA style fighting inevitably gives way to something closer to full blown Thunderdome, there arises a need to protect the combatants so they can live on to fight again. The logical next step for combat sports seems to be weapon based arena combat, so creating a suit of battle armor seems like a good place to start.

Enter the Lorica, a lightweight yet extremely durable suit of combat armor that can withstand weapon strikes, so fighters don’t have to hold back in the ring. This "pretty much is Batman" suit of armor was created by Unified Weapons Master, a company that hopes their suits will kick start the next generation of martial arts competition.

Here's more on this amazing combat gear:

It's made from a blend of lightweight, flexible materials and comes with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, a point-of-view camera, a microphone and 52 pressure sensors that send data to an external computer program.

The idea? To let martial artists compete at full speed with weapons in much the way bare-fisted fighters currently do in mixed-martial arts competitions such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

An Exploration Of Wes Anderson's Obsession With Symmetry

(Video Link)

You don’t have to be a film scholar to notice one interesting/signature thing about all of Wes Anderson’s movies- they contain an inordinate amount of extremely symmetrical shots. Clearly Mr. Anderson is obsessed with symmetry, and has no problem disregarding the rule of thirds while he explores his obsession on film.

Vimeo user kogonada edited together clips from many of Wes's movies, complete with a dotted white line dead in the middle of the frame, which helps illustrate the symmetrical nature of each shot.

Once you've seen the symmetry it's impossible to unsee, but knowing it's there may make you appreciate how much work and planning Wes Anderson puts in to directing his films.

Tolkien's Translation Of Beowulf Is Finally Being Published

(Image Via Wikimedia)

J.R.R. Tolkien’s original stories, like the Lord of the Rings trilogy, get all the attention and overshadow the fact that Tolkien is known in academic circles as an authority on Beowulf, citing the work as having a major influence on his writing.

He delivered a passionate lecture in 1936 on Beowulf's merits as a classic work, and this lecture succeeded in convincing many scholars to take Beowulf seriously.

Tolkien felt that Beowulf should be appreciated as a work of fantasy fiction, and not as just some silly vikings versus monsters story, and in 1926 he finished his own translation of the poem, a translation that would never see publication-until May 22nd, 2014 when Beowulf: A Translation and Commentary arrives in bookstores.

Artists Depict What It Feels Like To Have A Migraine

Anyone who has dealt with the mind bending pain of a migraine, and those who have watched a migraine sufferer struggle to keep it together when their head is full of pressure, knows that migraines are more than just headaches- they can really ruin your life.

The pain, the pressure, the effect on vision and other senses, make migraines a uniquely terrible experience, one which inspired artists and sufferers to illustrate for a book by Klaus Podoll and Derek Robinson called Migraine Art: The Migraine Experience From Within.

The images found in this decidedly niche art book. like those shown here by Michael Bolls, depict the sufferer's experiences with extreme head pain, with many equating it to a horrifyingly painful psychedelic trip. They're making my head hurt just looking at 'em!

How Not To Kill Yourself With Household Items

How Not To Kill Yourself With Household Items is full of tips that may seem like common sense, or situations you may find inconceivable, like ingesting 40 tablespoons of cinnamon at once or somehow ending up with 13 tubes of toothpaste sliding down your foodhole while you’re brushing your teeth.

But author PJ Smith feels it’s in your best interest to learn about all the things in your household that can kill you, so you won’t even feel safe at home and you can make your already estranged life even stranger.

Oh, and did I mention these tips are accompanied by pretty pictures drawn by Lindsay Mound? Yeah, they somehow manage to make every single tip even more terrifying.

Sculpted Hand Street Art Appears In Barcelona

Hands are sprouting out of the walls and sidewalks in Barcelona, and they have an awful lot to say considering they’re nothing but a bunch of disembodied hands and arm segments.

They’re like the street art version of Thing from the Addams Family, but these guys look like they’ve been out of work for a while, because they're getting a bit desperate for funds..

These handy street art interventions are the product of a collaboration between Octavi Serra, Mateu Targa, Daniel Llugany and Pau Garcia, four artists lending some handy, and clever, artwork to the sidewalks of Barcelona.

A Short Film About Unexpected Transformation - Elefante

(Video Link)

Living life as a human being can be hard enough, but if you were slowly turning into an elephant and had to live the rest of your life with a long trunk growing out of your face and big, stumpy appendages where you once had hands and feet you’d probably be a bit grumpy too.

In Elefante a guy undergoes just such a transformation, and his estranged life as an outcast becomes even stranger.

This darkly humorous short by Pablo Larcuen explores themes of alienation, personal transformation and the importance of family when you're undergoing a major metamorphosis.

These First World Rebels Know Rules Are Made To Be Broken

The people, and a few animals, that make up Bored Panda's list of 33 First-World Anarchists Who Don't Care About Your Rules aren’t what you’d normally think of as anarchists, at least not in the political sense, they’re more like pranksters who stick it to society by disregarding simple rules like don’t lay on the lawn, don’t stand in this area, and no dogs allowed.

These are first world problems, with first world repercussions for those who get caught- you might get yelled at, or a ticket, or you may be chased off by a flashlight wielding security guard, so you know these rebels mean serious business when they not only disregard a posted warning- they post a picture online as proof of their rebellious nature.

Music Video Starring Jim Henson's Creature Shop Creations - Little Fang

(Video Link)

Hiring Jim Henson’s Creature Shop to make puppets for your music video means your video will definitely have visual appeal, and a unique look that’s hard to beat, but the question will arise- to use humans or not to use humans?

Animal Collective member Avey Tare decided to include humans, but only in the most terrifying way possible, in this video for his Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks song entitled "Little Fang". The band members show up as ghosts, and strange creatures with floating facial features, and the scariest monsters of them all- clowns!

"Little Fang" was inspired by Avey’s kitty, who may or may not be a ghost whisperer but is definitely a better driver than Toonces the Driving Cat ever was.

The Joy Of Watching A Designer Sweater Slowly Unravel

(Video Link)

There’s something so relaxing about watching a sweater being unraveled thread by thread, slowly being reduced back to its core material. Sweaters are really just big balls of yarn, after all, and as Last Season proves slapping a fancy label on the collar doesn’t make it more than the sum of its parts.

Last Season is a documented act of designer sweater deconstruction which was orchestrated by artists/designers Lernert & Sander, who created the video, and accompanying before and after photos, as part of an advertising campaign for designer boutique Kiki Niesten.

Well, that's one way to put your sweaters away until next winter!

Creepy Computer Animated Short from 1974- Hunger

(Video Link)

When you think of computer animation from the mid-70s some pretty rough images probably come to mind, but Hunger might change your mind about what could be done with a computer in the 70s.

Hunger was made by Peter Foldes in 1974, and it was meant to be a "film satire of self-indulgence in a hungry world", an educational piece created with funding from the National Film Board of Canada.

However, watching it will probably creep you out rather than teaching you anything, but it's not to be missed if you're a lover of vintage and/or surreal animation.
