Artist Unveils Final Design For Edgar Allan Poe Statue

Sculptor Stefanie Rocknak was chosen out of 265 artists to create a commemorative statue of Edgar Allan Poe to go up in the Boston neighborhood where he was born, and she has just unveiled the final design of her amazing statue.

The incredibly detailed and lifelike sculpture will be used as the basis for a bronze statue to go up on the corner of Boylston Street and Charles Street on October 5, 2014, an area commonly referred to as "Edgar Allan Poe Square".

Here's what Stefanie has to say about her awesome statue design:

I propose to cast a life-size figure of Poe in bronze. Just off the train, the figure would be walking south towards his place of birth, where his mother and father once lived. Poe, with a trunk full of ideas—and worldwide success—is finally coming home. His expression is complex. He is determined and his stride is decisive. His face reflects a mixture of pain, anger and sadness, and from some angles, a subtle sense of hope. As he walks towards Carver Street, he openly dismisses what is behind him with his left hand; the Frogpondians to the north. Boston is not claiming Poe, Poe is claiming Boston. To punctuate this, he leaves a literal paper trail behind him. He has not only left his mark on the world, he has left it on the city of his birth. His ideas are jumping off the page and cascading out of his trunk; a heart lies just behind him, and an oversized Raven explodes to the south. The Raven, which has become symbolic of Poe’s brooding creative spirit, visually reflects Poe; his coat mimics the raven’s wing, and, like a bird, Poe is slightly pigeon-toed. They are one, heading up-wind towards their final resting place.

The Soft Sculpture Works Of Mister Finch

Mister Finch creates soft sculptures which look like they're part of an otherworldly natural history museum collection, from a dimension where the flora and fauna are all made out of fabric.

Massive insects with textile wings, fabric birds with wire talons trapped in glass display domes, and linen plants with muted color palettes are all on display in Mister Finch's imaginative tableaus, taking the viewer on a trip into a purely fabric-ated realm created by that great big sewing machine in the sky.

Nic Cage's Encounters With The Animal Kingdom

(Video Link)

Nicolas Cage has a reputation for being a bit of a wild man, and when he gets that smile on his face and a mad look in his eyes you know the crazed critter that lurks inside him is about to be set free. Maybe that's why Nic has so many strange encounters with animals- they see him as one of their own.

Recently Nicolas Cage went on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and talked about some of the encounters he’s had over the years with wild animals, from an ankle biting bandicoot to a meeting with a great white shark.

3D Printed Stop Motion Short - Bears On Stairs

(Video Link)

Bears on Stairs isn't a high concept art piece, or a stop motion short that features revolutionary digital techniques or a highly detailed puppet cast. It's a simple short which showcases a simple idea that is sure to be imitated by many animators to come.

DBLG has come up with a rather ingenious way to create a stop motion short with the help of 3D modeling/animation software and a 3D printer- they created the bear character and the stairs using 3D animation software, animated the bear walking up the stairs then printed out each element frame by frame.

It may not be the most efficient way to create a stop motion short, but Bears on Stairs is a good example of how 3D printing can be integrated into a traditional artform like stop motion animation.

Footage Of The First Legoland Park Opening In 1968

(Video Link)

LEGO was a relatively unknown company in America circa 1968, but in Billund, Denmark they were already constructing the very first Legoland, which attracted over 600,000 visitors in its first year alone.

The power of those little building blocks was put on display in the form of highly detailed scale models- miniature towns, environments and landmarks populated the ten acre theme park and showed that LEGO bricks were more than just toys.

It's interesting to see how the LEGO empire has grown over the last fifty years, and the original Legoland revealed in this vintage footage is a far cry from the chain of LEGO theme parks we know today.

Stanley Kubrick's Daughter Photographs Life With Her Famous Father

Stanley Kubrick had a young lady overseeing productions such as 2001 and The Shining, but she wasn’t a producer or any real part of the production, at least not until she grew up.

The she we're speaking of is Stanley’s daughter Vivian, and her photographic documentation of life on the sets of her father’s films give us a rare glimpse behind the scenes of Kubrick's films and into his personal life.

Vivian clearly enjoyed being part of the action, so much so that she grew up to create Making "The Shining" documentary for the BBC and wrote the score for Full Metal Jacket, among her many other contributions, but the focus here is on her photography, which she has been sharing via Twitter as a tribute to her cinematic life with Stanley.

You can read more about Vivian Kubrick and the role she played in her father's films over at Dangerous Minds, and you can view a small collection of Vivian's photographs at Imgur.

Meet Mr. Poo- India's Anti-Public Defecation Mascot

(Video Link)

It seems that crap is literally piling up on the streets and sidewalks of India, becoming one big, smelly mess that affects the health and hygiene of the people, so UNICEF has come up with a catchy way to remind people to deposit their waste in the proper receptacle- Mr. Poo.

He's the stinky star of an advertising campaign, a really catchy music video that urges people to "take the poo to the loo", and a video game where players flush away the villanous Mr. Poo's legion of turd minions.

Mr. Poo is someone you don't want hanging around your city streets, not to be confused with Monsieur Le Pew, who also stinks but is way more fun to be around!

The Best Songwriter You've Probably Never Heard Of

Benji Hughes is a relatively unknown songwriter who truly deserves his day in the sun, and even though you may not know his name you’ve probably heard one of his songs.

Benji has created music for many famous ad campaigns, from Captain Morgan to Cheerios, he’s worked with many famous musicians, from Kesha to Rilo Kiley to Alice Cooper, and he’s a masterful singer, songwriter and musician who is destined for great things…as soon as people hear his album.

Released in 2008, Benji’s amazing debut album A Love Extreme is described by many as a "cult classic" and "damn near perfect", yet Benji has only managed to sell around 6,000 copies of his heartfelt labor of love. Maybe people just haven't heard of Benji yet, but once the word gets out, and people hear his album and form their own opinions, he's sure to get the critical acclaim he deserves.

Read about Hughes at Vulture.

What The "Average American" Will Look Like In 2050

It is projected that by the year 2050 the people who make up our American melting pot will reach an ultimate level of mixed ethnic heritage, resulting in the minority truly becoming anyone who is of one racial background.

National Geographic decided to explore the look of the "average American" with a little help from photographer Martin Schoeller and a bit of digital manipulation, creating a series of portraits that show what these future Americans will look like.

The projected faces are familiar rather than far fetched, and may help alleviate the fear and doubts some people still have about interracial relationships.

Baby Starts Dancing When The EDM Beat Drops

(Video Link)

For some reason EDM (electronic dance music) really appeals to young children. Maybe it’s the driving beat and the catchy sounds used as hooks, or it’s the simplicity of the rhythm that appeals to their fresh young ears.

Whatever the reason little kids really like to cut loose and boogie their little butts off whenever they hear an EDM track, but the baby in this video has mastered the art of ninja dancing, waiting for the beat to drop before she comes to life and jams out with her sisters.

Watch Two Senior Citizens Fly For The First Time

(Video Link)

Flying on an airplane for the first time is usually one of those milestone moments people experience before they reach adulthood, but whether out of fear or not wanting to travel some people never seem to get around to taking that first flight.

An & Ria, the subjects of this delightful video, didn’t get around to taking a flight until they were well into their senior years, and they both figured if they didn’t take to the sky soon they might not get another chance, so they agreed to take their first flight and have their reactions documented by firsts.com.

It’s equal parts hilarious and heartwarming, and maybe it will convince those of you who have yet to take their first flight that now is the time!
