Star Wars Gets The Macross Treatment

(Video Link)

You may have already drawn a correlation between Star Wars and Robotech, you may have pulled out this geeky trump card while in a heated discussion with a fellow fan over which franchise is better, and you may feel like all SW is missing is an animated treatment in Macross era anime style.

If this sounds like you then this animated short by otaking77077 will be right up your alley, even though it’s missing transforming TIE fighters and a brash young pilot like Rick Hunter, but to those who have never compared the two series you'll flip at how well these two sci-fi flavors go together!

EDIT: Neatoramanaut Frau has an update:

The music was not added by otaking77077. It was added by Youtube user JPL4185 and published to Youtube in 2012.
It was originally a private project WIP that Otaking would post in bits to 4chan's Mecha board.
Because it was a WIP - Otaking pulled it.
But as most often is the situation - someone sees something so awesome they have to share, so they copy it before it disappears.   -Thanks Frau!

Six Facts You Might Not Know About Bruce Campbell And The Evil Dead

Well before Ash worked at S-Mart, donned a chainsaw arm, and shared the value of owning a good Boomstick, he was just a guy hanging out with his friends in a cabin in the woods, trying to score with a girlfriend he was ultimately forced to decapitate with a shovel.

Sam Raimi’s seminal horror flick The Evil Dead changed the way many viewers saw the horror genre- it added a much needed dose of humor, successfully launched a franchise still wildly popular with fans to this day, and helped kickstart the career of Bruce Campbell, which is an amazing contribution in itself!

Celebrate Bruce’s belated birthday with 6 Things You Probably Don’t Know About Bruce Campbell And The Evil Dead, it's a fun way to say "Hail to the King!" as he turns 56 years young.

Iggy Pop, The Dalai Lama And Karl Lagerfeld Are Tortured For A Good Cause

What do Karl Lagerfeld, the Dalai Lama and Iggy Pop have in common, besides fame and critical acclaim? They’re all representing victims of physical abuse in this thought provoking ad campaign created by Amnesty International to raise awareness about the unjust torturing of prisoners.

The underlying message is that torture isn’t really effective because a tortured man will say whatever you want him to say, for example- Lagerfeld will claim that Hawaiian shirts and flip-flops are the height of elegance, and the Dalai Lama will claim that a man who doesn’t own a Rolex by the time he’s fifty is a total failure if you beat them badly enough.

It's a bit jarring to see the Dalai Lama all battered and bruised, but somehow this look really suits Iggy!

Rainbow Cake Recipe Post Turns Into Comment Crapstorm

People who write for online media outlets, and those who are avid readers of these sites, know that commenting can go from positive and friendly to shockingly horrible in the blink of an eye.

Case in point- a well meaning baked goods enthusiast named “Web Guy Josh” from Melbourne, Australia posted a recipe for a deliciously psychedelic Amazing Rainbow Tie-Dye Number Surprise Cake on Fox 101.9's site (blogged about on Neatorama previously), and one helpful commenter offered a suggestion to make the recipe better.

What happened next is one of those real life moments too strange to be made up- comments quickly turned from snarky corrections to a full blown crapstorm of craziness, full of insulting name calling and political ranting, all because someone asked a simple question about one step in the recipe.

Read this incredibly ridiculous account of commenting gone horribly wrong at The Concourse, but save room for the ridiculous crapstorm this article about commenting created in their comment section, which proves the internet apocalypse is right around the corner!

Neuroscientist Explains Why Hodor Can Only Say Hodor

The hulking mass of a man they call Hodor (even though his real name is Walder) is considered mentally inept by every character he meets in the fantasy world George R. R. Martin built because he can only say one word, but what’s really going on in that giant, meaty head of his?

According to neuroscientist Indre Viskontas he may actually be suffering from expressive aphasia- “a neurological condition usually caused by a localized stroke in the front of the brain”, which leaves him with relatively normal comprehension but reduces his power of speech to just one word.

It’s a fascinating theory, but I’ll stick to my own theory that he’s looking for his missing dog Hodor and won’t stop saying his name until he’s found!

Five Things Hollywood Movies Get Wrong About Bank Heists

Aah the bank heist, a Hollywood movie staple from the very beginning- whole movies have been based around the criminally precise art of successfully robbing a bank, generally at gunpoint, yet according to one bank guard (who shall remain nameless) Hollywood has it all wrong.

According to Mr. Guardey McGuarderson there are five things which would never work in real life when you’re trying to pull of the perfect heist, including dressing in a disguise and bluffing your way into the vault, that Guardey knows are just plain bunk from personal experience.

Did I mention he's a security guard at a branch of the Federal Reserve Bank?

Read more about 5 Things Movies Got Wrong About Bank Heists (From A Guard) and maybe you'll be able to pull off the perfect crime...

The Most Inspiring Collection of Senior Yearbook Quotes

Those high school seniors who are lucky enough to graduate are now ready to move on to the next phase of their life, which will either involve full time employment and disillusionment, college enrollment and a lifetime of crushing student loan debt, or utter laziness and mooching off their folks, but despite their lack of world experience seniors often have some rather sagely advice to share.

Underlying messages like "keep your chin up", "always be prepared" and "let your creativity shine through in all you do" are meant to inspire the underclassmen to stay in school and graduate, if only so they can get their own senior quote in the yearbook!

Elegant Gender Swapped Cosplay of Elsa From Frozen

Sometimes a killer cosplay creation requires lots of sculpting, fabrication and an amazing paintjob, and sometimes all it takes is a simply smashing costume and a whole lotta attitude.

DeviantArtist and cosplayer Keruuu decided to go with simple yet elegant when he created this gender swapped costume of Elsa from Frozen, and boy did he make the right call!

He calls his character King Elisar, and he made everything for this photo series happen with his own two hands, from his wonderfully detailed costume to the great makeup application to the shiny post processing effects, and cosplayers who think they can do better should probably Let It Go!

Boob And Sock Money Not Welcome Here

If you’re in the habit of keeping your cash in your “chest of wonders”, or conveniently tucking it into your sock, then you’d better reconsider where you keep your cash or else find a store willing to take your sweaty/stinky money, because one store in particular is starting a “boob and sock money not welcome here" trend.

It seems the owner of this store was tired of handling cash which smelled like feet or boob sweat so they instituted this policy for the sake of their sense of smell, and when the sign was spotted by Adam R. Bowser he just had to share it with the world via his Twitter feed!

Tim Burton's Take On Hansel And Gretel

(Video Link)

There are few creative filmmakers with a more distinctive style than Tim Burton, and even though his “original” style can be traced back to illustrators like Edward Gorey he has made this dark yet cartoony style his own with movies like Edward Scissorhands, Frankenweenie and, of course, The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Well before he made his big screen debut with these iconic features he was applying his dark formula to the classic fairy tale Hansel and Gretel which aired on the Disney Channel in 1983.

For his unique envisioning of the classic tale Tim cast a man (Michael Yama) as the Wicked Witch, Japanese actors as the children, and shot the whole thing on 16mm film for just over $100,000, opting as always for stop motion and practical effects when creating this crazy cool short film.

It aired only once on the Disney Channel, alongside Burton’s other classic short Vincent, but thanks to the diligent efforts of a fan it has been discovered and placed on YouTube for your viewing pleasure!

Fanny And Stella - Two Victorian Gentlemen Who Shocked England

Miss Fanny Park and Miss Stella Boulton didn’t quite look like average ladies in Victorian era England, there was something a bit different about their appearance and their attitudes, and even though it’s hard to immediately tell from an old photo Fanny and Stella are actually men dressed in drag, Thomas Ernest Boulton and Frederick William Park, arguably the first example of those we now refer to as drag queens.

In an era characterized by sexual oppression, puritanical beliefs and delicate social standards Fanny and Stella shocked the norms with their flirtatious manner when dressed in drag, and men responded quite favorably to their advances, but their flamboyant behavior ultimately got the pair arrested and sparked one of the most sensationalized episodes of the era.

They attended a performance at the Strand Theater dressed as men, then changed into their frilly frocks while at the theater, unaware that they were being watched by a police man. He arrested the duo just as they were about to leave in a carriage, on the charge of "conspiring and inciting persons to commit an unnatural offence", most likely because they were keeping some rather auspicious men company.

The subsequent trial became quite the scandalous media spectacle, and even though the two were eventually found not guilty and released their public shaming and mistreatment would foreshadow the long, dark road ahead of openly homosexual men and women who simply want to be free to live their lives however they see fit. And now we have a show called RuPaul's Drag Race on cable TV...we've come a long way!

Cubicles & Careers - The Fantasy Creature's Answer To D&D

(Video Link)

(Video Link)

We all know what roleplaying game players do when they’re bored- they let their minds go on a grand adventure, where perilous journeys await and the laws of fate are governed by the roll of polyhedral dice.

So what are fantasy creatures like elves and orcs doing on the other side of the looking glass while we imagine slaying them for the sake of xp? They’re sitting around roleplaying as boring humans, of course!

When your world is full of dangerous adventures and magical treasures mundane things, like asset allocation reports and water cooler small talk, can seem like a strange adventure, and the new webseries Cubicles & Careers captures the excitement of boring human roleplaying perfectly.

The series was created by Murray Triplett and Greg Johnson of FantasyCon, and so far it looks like a fun way to keep your eyeballs entertained in-between random encounters and combat rounds.
