Life: The RPG

We don't earn experience points by going about our daily lives, nor are we guaranteed to have lots of adventures and earn lots of gold in our lifetimes because, like it or not, life is mostly mundane.

But if you want to feel a sense of accomplishment in your dull life you can create an "epic tasks" checklist every day and pretend you're completing quests as you cross stuff like "put on clean clothes" and "heat up leftovers" off your list.

Just try not to make the list too long or too unrealistic, or you might end up stuck at level 1 for the rest of your life. (Comic by Optipess Comics)

Training An Adorable Baby Fennec Fox To Sit

Apparently fennec foxes make pretty good pets, but if fox owners can get their fox to stop tearing up the furniture, climbing the curtains and knocking over the kitchen trash they consider themselves lucky.

But the folks from the Foxes and Friends Rescue trying to train Edie the baby fennec fox are clearly way past these beginning stages of fox training, since they've trained Edie to sit, although not for very long.

As the poster of the video points out training Edie was hard because she has "the attention span of a tea spoon", but I think it's amazing they were able to get that adorable little bundle of energy to sit at all, much less listen to commands.

And in case you're still on the fence about whether Edie is the cutest little animal ever watch her play with colored balls and savagely attack a camera strap.

Musician Accidentally Texts His Wife With Voice Recognition While Playing The Trombone

Voice recognition software is far from perfect, and depending on how clearly you enunciate and your accent the software might not know what to do with the words coming out of your mouth.

But some voice recognition software is actually really good at converting sounds to text, which musician Paul Nowell, aka Paul the Trombonist, discovered when he accidentally texted his wife with voice recognition while playing the trombone:

The voice recognition software did such a good job of translating Paul's trombone groove that you can actually play along with your mouth if you sound out the words like a trombone would.

And since his tweet went viral Paul decided to make this video response to show how his tromboning got turned into a text:

Why Mental Health Disorders Emerge In Your Late Teens To Early 20s

I've watched some of the greatest people I've ever known become a shadow of their former selves when mental disorders took control of their minds and totally ruined their lives.

And whether they were diagnosed with bipolar disorder, depression or schizophrenia there was one constant- their mental disorders began to emerge during their late teens to mid-20s.

So why do these disorders appear at such a specific time in a young person's life? VICE spoke with a postdoctoral fellow Dr. Johanna Jarcho, Ph. D. from the National Institute of Mental Health to find out:

Yeah, the vast majority of mental health disorders do emerge during one's adolescence or early 20s. If you're going to have an anxiety disorder as an adult, there's a 90% chance that you'll have had it as an adolescent. Basically, you're not going to develop an anxiety disorder as an adult. You're going to develop it as a kid and then it'll carry through to adulthood. Emerging research suggests that this is because adolescence is a time when the brain is changing to a great degree. We once thought that the brain didn't change that much after earlier childhood, but what we've seen is that the brain continues to undergo really profound changes up until your early 20s. It's still quite malleable, so being exposed to different influences in your social environment can really have a profound impact on the way that your brain continues to develop.

Terrifying Home Inspector Nightmare Photos

Home inspectors tend to exaggerate a bit when it comes to their estimate of repairs needed in a home, which is something homeowners and real estate agents have come to expect when they ask for an assessment.

But if a home inspector showed you some of the photos off this list of 100 Super Scary Home Inspection Nightmare Photos there would be no exaggeration involved in his estimate, only a suggestion to demolish and reconstruct!

The photos are fifty percent Tweeker fixes, aka slipshod repairs never meant to last, 30% severe deterioration seen in old homes, ten percent damage caused by animals and ten percent duct tape. Make that twenty percent duct tape, then adjust the other estimates as needed.

Animals With Attitudes Abound In Joshua Barkman's False Knees

Animals are born with a devil-may-care attitude, so we humans who have been taught to be polite for the sake of a civilized society find their brash and boisterous attitudes both enviable and endearing.

That's why videos of cats who knock stuff off counters go viral, and why our favorite cartoon animals are always sassy and brazen jerks who love to tell humans to get stuffed.

Animals are also popular with the comic strip set, but nobody captures that real animal feel like Joshua Barkman, creator of the comic strip False Knees.

In a False Knees strip you'll find animals tellin' it like it is, critters who aren't afraid to not give AF, and lots of funny observations about life and death in the natural world.

A Custom Electric Skateboard Built To Ride On Railroad Tracks

Skateboarding can be tiring, what with all the pushing, coasting and course correcting, and a skateboard isn't a very effective mode of transportation considering most of them can only handle smooth roads and sidewalks.

But if you've been looking for a way to skate across the country with minimal effort and maximum efficiency then you'll love this radical electrical skateboard built by Roadie.

It was designed to "skate" along railroad tracks, and while it won't do you much good on the street it will get you across the country way faster than your average wheeled skateboard.

Japanese Artisans Create A Range Of High Quality Cat Furniture

Cats will lay pretty much wherever they want, and where humans see a box, bowl or computer keyboard they see a comfy place to catch some zzzzs.

This makes it hard to predict how cats will react when you bring home a bed, cat tree and other furniture made specifically for cats, but if you have a prissy kitty then they'll love this artisanal furniture made just for feline royalty.

Japanese design collective Okawa Kagu came up with the idea to make high quality cat-sized furniture when they realized the internet's obsession with cats could help revitalize the craft industry in the Fukuoka prefecture region:

Home to 150 furniture-manufacturing factories, Okawa Kagu came up with the idea to merge the internet’s love for cats with the skills of local artisans. The new production took existing full-scale designs and down-sized them to produce high-quality miniature versions that satisfy even the fussiest of felines.

The collection comprises of a pine wood sofa designed and produced by Hiromatsu Furniture, and a dark wood cat bed designed and produced by Tateno Mokuzai.

You can view the pieces at Okawa Terrazza—an information center with a focus on highlighting local design. Each product is available through the respective manufacturers.

An Amusing Stranger Things Parody Where The Kids Are Played By Adults

The fact that the main heroes in Stranger Things are kids is really important to the storyline, and since the show pays homage to 80s movies like E.T., The Goonies and Stand By Me having a group of kids as the heroes just looks right.

If you want to see how wrong Stranger Things would look if the main stars were adults watch this short by Devin Super Tramp entitled Stranger Things Meets E. T. In Real Life Parody! and LOL at the ridiculousness of it all.

It's stupid funny, and Gaten Matarazzo makes an appearance, so Stranger Things fans are sure to love this short!

The Problem With British Zombies

When it comes to zombies most people don't think to draw distinctions between dead people of different genders, races or ethnicities, because they're all an abomination and need to be destroyed immediately.

Some zombies would be easy to put down, and a shotgun blast to the head would be doing them a favor, but trying to take out a British zombie could be a bit tricky.

Because, as this comic by Julia Lepetit shows, British zombies are just too polite to blow away!

Tis the season for overeating and drinking way too much, as we keep our spirits bright by overindulging.

All that holiday food is great, and the holiday desserts are to die for, but eating too much or coupling these foods with alcohol is likely to make your blood sugar spike, which can leave you feeling ill.

Symptoms like blurred vision, excess urination, dry and itchy skin, dry mouth and constant fatigue are all signs your blood sugar may be too high, so pay attention and cut down on the sweets when you're feeling less than neat.

Police Warn About A Carjacking Scam Involving A "Child" Sitting In The Middle Of The Road

Automobile-related urban legends often involve drivers getting scammed or waylaid in some way by people using the road as their hunting grounds, luring drivers out of their cars so they can prey on them.

I've heard about drivers flashing their headlights to provoke a response, and stranded motorists flagging down good Samaritans for the kill, but the baby in the road trick is a new one- and it's kinda creepy.

A 33-year-old woman from Beaufort, North Carolina saw a child sitting in the middle of the road at 1:30 a.m. so she wisely drove up to investigate further and discovered it was actually a small dummy in kid's clothing.

(Image Link)

She immediately called the cops, who informed her she was lucky she didn't get out of her car or she might have fallen victim to carjackers, the kid dummy serving as a clever ruse to draw people out of their cars.

This particular situation ended up being nothing but a prank perpetrated by teens, but cops say they've seen a similar scam used by carjackers who swoop in and steal the car after the driver gets out to investigate the dummy. And that's how a new car-related urban legend is born.
