In the 80s I was a full-blown Commodore 64 fanboy, and I still believe the C64 was the best computer in its time due to the fact that it was user friendly, affordable and had floppy discs so you could share games with your friends.

Now as much as I loved my C64 back in the day I haven't had one since the 90s, and I would never trade my modern PC for a classic Commodore, but some people don't feel the need to upgrade.

In fact, there's a small auto repair shop in Gdansk, Poland that is still using a Commodore 64 to run their operation, a computer they've been using for over 25 years that has survived a flood and keeps on keeping on.

Almost makes me want to buy a C64 again...never mind, I found an emulator.

The idea of a bunch of rats linking up to form some kind of grotesque rodent version of Voltron sounds like the stuff of fairy tales, but it turns out Rat Kings are real- and they're horrifying to behold too.

Rat kings are created when a bunch of rats end up with their tails so entangled they can't pull them apart, causing this cluster of rats to go in to full blown freak out mode.

Rat king sightings have been limited mostly to Germany, where they were seen as far back as the 16th century, and their existence is hotly debated by zoologists, who believe preserved rat kings are nothing but hoaxes.

And yet there have been too many sightings for rat kings to be nothing but a myth, and all the more recent squirrel king sightings have proven the theory of tail entanglement to be true.

So the real question is- how do the tails become entangled so tightly?:

The most plausible explanation is that black rats—which have long, supple tails and reside in close quarters during winter—may come in contact with a sticky or frozen substance such as sebum (secreted from the critters’ skin), sap, food, feces, frozen urine, or frozen blood. The bonding agent may solidify as the animals slumber. Once the rodents realize their tails are glued, they might create a tighter knot as they attempt to wriggle free.

This explanation has a ring of truth: Most rat kings were discovered during the winter or a frosty shoulder season, and they’re usually found in a tight shelter.

It's common knowledge that orcas and great white sharks are two of the scariest and most vicious oceanic predators, both fairly evenly matched in terms of size, speed and ferocity.

What we don't always know is which one of the two savage predators would win in a fight, because depending on the circumstances it's pretty much a toss-up.

But a recent discovery on the shores of South Africa's Western Cape province proves once and for all why orcas would win- because they're smart and precise killers, like Jack the Rippers of the sea:

The great white shark, Carcharodon carcharias, is considered the most voracious apex predator in temperate marine ecosystems worldwide, playing a key role in controlling ecosystem dynamics.

As a result, it is difficult to imagine a great white as prey. And yet, earlier this year the carcasses of five great whites washed ashore along South Africa’s Western Cape province. Ranging in size from 2.7 metres (9ft) to 4.9 metres (16ft), the two females and three males all had one thing in common: holes puncturing the muscle wall between the pectoral fins. Strangest of all, their livers were missing.

The bite marks inflicted, together with confirmed sightings indicate that orcas, Orcinus orca, were responsible for this precisely-targeted predation.

The diet of orcas is often geographic or population specific. Those populations predating in South African waters have been documented targeting smaller shark species for their livers. Cow sharks, blues and makos caught on longlines have had their livers removed by orcas, alongside the brains of the billfish also caught. Cow shark carcasses without livers have also washed ashore near Cape Town, and again, this followed nearby orca sightings.

With no doubt that orcas are using highly specialised hunting strategies to target the liver; the real question is: why?

Many made-for-TV documentaries with a teen target audience attempt to scare them into avoiding sex, drinking, drugs, crime and violence by showing them fictional scenarios depicting what might happen if they engage in these activities.

These cheesy TV specials are ineffective and panned by teens and parents alike, which is why filmmakers Joel DeMott and Jeff Kreines didn't want to use scare tactics or reenactments in Seventeen to change teen minds- so they used raw footage instead:

Seventeen would’ve been the sixth installment in Middletown, a five-part documentary series on small town American life. Middletown was filmed in Muncie, Indiana, conceived as a follow-up to two Depression-era sociology studies that took place in Muncie, Middletown: A Study in Modern American Culture and Middletown in Transition: A Study in Cultural Conflicts. The series aired on PBS in 1982.

Seventeen is the work of filmmakers Joel DeMott and Jeff Kreines (note that DeMott is female, despite her traditionally male forename). The duo followed a group of Class of 1981 seniors during their final year at Muncie’s Southside High School. In the film, students mouth off to their teachers, curse up a storm, talk openly and graphically about sex, get drunk, get high, and are generally seen acting in an irresponsible fashion. Race relations is a recurrent topic—the language used will be shocking to the average viewer—with the threat of violence breaking out between black and white residents so frequent that it becomes unnerving. A number of students appear in Seventeen, but the focus is on Lynn Massie, a particularly outspoken and vivacious teen. Massie, who is white, is dating a black classmate, which is frowned upon by many in her community. At one point, racist neighbors burn a cross on the Massies’ front lawn...
