Ultrasound of Breastfeeding Baby

Have you ever wondered how breastfeeding works? It turns out that babies create a vacuum when they suckle.
Until now, most studies examining the mechanics of breastfeeding have focused on bottle-feeding infants, or on old X-rays that were of poor quality.

Instead, Geddes and her colleagues combined ultrasound imaging of infants suckling on the breast with measurements of the strength of the vacuum created by the baby's mouth in 20 infants aged 3 to 24 weeks as they breastfed (see video).

"What we see is that when the tongue is lowered and the vacuum is applied, that's when the milk is coming out of the breast, and that doesn't involve any compression of the nipple," says Geddes. "It's not a milking action at all."

Love, Mom

Pregnancy is an amazing time in a woman's life.  You plan, you hope, you dream.  Sometimes, however, those dreams never come true. The numbers are sobering.  More than 1 in 160 pregnancies end in still birth.

A still birth is when the fetus dies after reaching 20 weeks of pregnancy.  That essentially means that you have had enough time to bond with your baby. You have felt them move. You have had time to fall in love.

How do you grieve a child you have never met but love so deeply? Love, Mom by Cynthia Baseman delves into the soul of a Mother who has lost her child to still birth. The book is a rare glimpse into the normally private world of a grieving mother.  The story unfolds among heartbreaking journal entries and letters written to the daughter that she will never know.  You can't help but  follow her along as she attempts restore the sense of peace an happiness that has been shattered by loss. Only through sharing this kind of pain can you really teach someone how to recover.

Cynthia Baseman is also the writer and editor of Santa Barbara Trail Riders.  Since 1998, Baseman has been teaching writers workshops for children and teens, encouraging them to keep journals as she has since she was a child. She currently resides with her husband and two sons in Los Angeles.

Love, Mom is also included in a women's health anthology called  The Body Politic, co-written by Barbara Seaman and Laura Eldridge.

Excerpts:

June 2, 1995

My Sweet Samantha,

I’m dying.  I’m sure of it.  This week has been endless and it’s only Wednesday.  Over Memorial Day we went to the cemetery to pick out a marker.  A marker!  Oh my God.  I should be picking out your dresses.  Will I ever be able to stand Wednesdays again?

Love, Mom

I was having a challenging day; the strain of returning to the cemetery pulled me pretty low.  It’s never a smart thing to get into the car and drive while you’re feeling distraught.  Fortunately, nothing bad happened.  Not this time.  While Bobby took his afternoon nap, I got in my car and on a whim, I headed west toward the beach.  As I glided down West Channel Road and could see the ocean before me, I veered north down Pacific Coast Highway, away from home.  The waves hitting the shore had a hypnotic rhythm, soothing as a lullaby.  I turned the radio off and rolled down the windows.  The wind stirred up loose tissues from the dash and they blew around the car like a snow flurry.  My car surged forward as I goosed the accelerator and if the stoplight at Topanga and Pacific Coast Highway hadn’t flashed red, I could’ve glided up north to the Ventura County line or beyond.  To say I wasn’t grounded would’ve been gross understatement.  The vacant parking lot opened its arms to me and I embraced it.

Topanga State Beach is a surfer’s beach; the shoreline is too rocky and exposed to be very inviting to anyone else.  A thick layer of fog drooped over the beach like a canopy and I was drawn to it.  The edge of Pacific Coast Highway was dotted with beat-up cars with perfectly waxed boards secured to their roofs.  I seemed to be the only idiot paying for parking.  I longed to pull the heavy fog over me like a blanket.

The view from the top of the concrete stairs allowed me to scan the shoreline.  I saw no traces of young moms with children, no young lovers making out on their towels.  In the distance were about two-dozed surfers with the singular purpose of reading and riding the right ones.  I headed down the stairs and brushed arms with a suntanned beauty with an angled jaw and the signature defined shoulders from daily paddling.  “Excuse me,” I muttered.  He passed me, remote and silent, behind his Maui Jim sunglasses.

Below, on the sand, I passed a group of young men who were struggling to pull their wetsuits up.  Graceful and athletic, they tiptoed through the rocks with their boards held firmly under one arm.  As they splashed into deeper water they slid their boards in front of them and mounted them in one seamless motion.  They paddled further and further from shore, their bodies growing more distant until all I could see was their silhouette against the horizon.

Like a flock of seagulls, they bobbled on the silvery surface.  They were as featureless as the water itself but they were musical in the rhythm of the ocean.  They waited.

I waited, too.

Please Don't Put Magnets On Mommy's Car

This NeatoBambino is trying to figure out what magnets stick to.  Guess what? They stick to Mommy's very dirty car. He also figured out that they stick to the fireplace screen.  Like my father always says, "Every kid is born a scientist."

Castrilla de Murcia's Baby Jumping Festival

YouTube Link

If you have a little baby and happen to be in Northern Spain on June 6 of this year you are in luck.  You get the opportunity to  lay your new bundle of joy on a mattress in the street and let some strange guy dressed as the devil jump over him.

The festival known as El Colacho has included baby jumping since the 1600's.
The festival itself is part of the celebrations of the Catholic festival of Corpus Christi which are held all over Spain. Whilst at this particular time many other cities and towns have spectacular processions and a a wide variety of popular celebrations, but this one has to be the strangest and only Baby Jumping Festival.

The babies are laid out on mattresses and grown men dressed as devils jump over the infants and this is supposed to cleanse them of all evil doings.

Are You Ambivalent About Getting Pregnant?

According to a recent study nearly 25%  of sexually active women are neither trying to have a baby nor actively attempting to prevent pregnancy.  Basically, they are fine with whatever happens.

About 71 percent questioned in the study of nearly 4,000 women ages 25 to 45 who were sexually active said they were not trying to get pregnant, while 6 percent said they were. But nearly one in four, or 23 percent, told researchers they were "OK either way," meaning they were neither trying to conceive, nor trying to prevent a pregnancy.

"If health-care providers only ask women if they are currently trying to get pregnant and women say no, then the assumption is that they are trying not to get pregnant," McQuillan said. "Clearly, many women are less intentional about pregnancy. Yet this group should be treated as if they will likely conceive and should therefore get recommendations such as ensuring adequate folic acid intake and limiting alcohol intake."

Fine Dining With Your Tot?

Shivani Vora wrote an interesting piece on eating out  with children in Manhattan for The New York Times.  More specifically it's about the increase in the number of swanky establishments offering amenities (high chairs, places to store a stroller) or tailored menu items for the 3- year and under crowd.
Meenakshi turned 2 last weekend — we celebrated at Café Boulud, where she selected her raisin-walnut roll from the bread tray to go with her goat-cheese risotto balls, and finished with a milk chocolate and peanut butter bar plus chocolate tuile (they wrote “happy birthday” on the plate), followed, of course, by the signature madeleines. She has been to some of New York’s finest eateries, finding obliging staff and a hint of culinary adventure in an otherwise uninspired diet. (And, I’m sure, some fellow diners who had paid for baby sitters and were perturbed at her presence.)

If you have kids, and either live in New York or are going to be visiting New York, the full article does list some restaurants that may be worth trying.

I personally think it would be great if high-end restaurants considered offering special family friendly dining sometime during the week or month.  I love to eat out and I love exposing my kids to new culinary delicacies, but I hate the idea of torturing other people with my children.

Father Saves His Infant Son From Car Crash

YouTube Link

A Father in Australia is caught by security cameras saving his infant son from an out of control car.  This Father is a true hero.
The security camera footage shows a car ploughing into Andrew Leach as he held his son Hayden on a pavement near a shop front.

Mr Leach's parents, standing nearby, were hit, and the baby's empty pram was sent flying.

Mr Leach held the baby to his chest as he was pushed into the shop window and his legs were pinned by the car.

The car was driven by an elderly woman who had lost control of the vehicle, Nine reported.

As the car hit, Mr Leach said he thought "if they hit the back of me, break a leg or whatever, that's fixable. But if they hit my son, he's not fixable." The boy was unhurt in the accident.

Mr Leach himself was shown climbing out from between the car and the shop front and was not badly hurt. Both his parents were admitted to hospital with injuries, but survived.

Temporary Tattoo Earrings For Kids

Bink'd has come up with a temporary tattoo earring for kids. I have never seen them in person but I love the concept.  It seems like a fun way to let little girls feel like they have their ears pierced without any of the pain or worry about infections.

Product Review: Baby Dipper Bowl

Some Neatorama fans sent us this great free sample of the Baby Dipper bowl to try out.  I have to say that at first I thought the shape was kind of funny. It reminded me of a sport cup.  But, now after having tried the product for feeding my 8 months old  I'm a total convert.  I love it.

The bowl is low enough that I don't accidentally knock it over.  It is solid enough that when I do manage to knock into it doesn't go anywhere.  It has a great non-slip base.

The spoon-shaped lower corner makes for very easy feeding. Sometimes it even lets me sneak in a bite of my own food with my free hand.

If I could change anything about the bowl it would be to make it in some different colors.

My favorite part about the bowl, however, is that it was Mommy invented. Mommy inventions rock!

Renaissance Faire

If you love Shakespeare and don't mind your husband talking to a few lusty wenches now and again you might want to consider a trip the Renaissance Faire.  There are typically plenty of games, live shows, food booths, and fun things for the kids to do there.

We recently attended the Original Renaissance Faire in Irwindale, California.  The kids loved the dragon puppets, the giant swing, and fruit ice.  They couldn't get enough of the fruit ice.  Who doesn't love fruit sorbet shoved into a carved out lemon, orange, or peach. Yummy. It's one of my favorites too.  My only advice is to make sure you bring lots of wipes with you.

There are tons of Renaissance type fairs out there and they run at all different times of the year. Some, of course, are more historically accurate then others.

Mom Releases Hostage Books She Kept Since 2008

A Florida Mother checked out 4 Gossip-Girl inspired books from her local library and held them hostage for nearly 2 years .   She finally decided to return the books late last week after her story circulated the news media.  She now owes $85 in late fees, but is hoping that the library will waive the fine.
Tina Harden, who had withheld the books since the fall of 2008 to keep young readers from seeing them, said she returned them not because of criticism she received but because she had made people aware of the issue through media attention.“There was a certain amount of good that could come from me holding the books to make a statement, and I felt like that was achieved,” said Harden, who has three teenagers. “I feel like I had done my part to help focus attention on this.”

Now, she said, it’s up to the Seminole County library system to make sure that books with inappropriate material are not available to children.

After an article about Harden appeared in Thursday’s Orlando Sentinel, a man donated replacement books to the library and several others told the library they planned to send checks or books to replace the ones Harden was keeping. The library is no longer accepting donations of Gossip Girl books, which, like the television show, chronicle the scandalous lives of a group of wealthy teens.

As for me, I am hoping someone washes the mini-van.  Oh, how I dream of having a clean car again.  Even if it just is for a day.
