You can't just import your normal sedan to get around in Antarctica. Special conditions call for special vehicles. Pro Vehicles has a roundup of the Top 13 Polar Super Vehicles from Antarctic. This picture shows a standard truck refitted with belts for covering snowy terrain. Vehicles made especially for the Antarctic look even weirder. Link -Thanks, Mads!
Steve Colligan plans to ride across the mountains of Nepal and Tibet on a unicycle!
The 47-year-old unicyclist has ridden all over the world, but never a path this difficult. The chosen route is one that mountain bikers consider an extreme adventure, but it's never been done on a unicycle. The average elevation of the route is 4,000 meters, and temperatures go down to 15 below zero (+5F). He will cross the north face of Mount Everest and stay over at the Everest Base Camp. The trip should take 25 days. The project is underwritten by a bicycle tour company. Donations will benefit the The Hilly Region Development Club. Link -Thanks, Plumsie!
On the 23rd September 2008 I fly to Nepal, then onto Tibet. I am going to ride my unicycle 1000km (620 miles) across the Roof of the World, from Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. I will be using this ride to raise as much money as possible to help fund an NGO (non-governmental organisation) and its projects to improve the educational facilities and amenities in a remote village in the Himalayas.

What weighs 8,000 pounds, turns on a dime, and looks like an Egyptian pyramid? The Dream Car 123! It may look like a pyramid, but it's outfitted like a tank and lights up in neon colors at night. The best part is that it runs on electricity. 3.5 hour charge will take the Dream Car 240 miles at up to 40 mph. Inventor Greg Zanis has also designed a tower garage that harvests solar and wind power to recharge the vehicle! Link (with videos) -Thanks, Jon Jason!
This video is a bit disturbing. The cat seems to never move, but it gets closer and closer. This may give me nightmares. I'm glad my cats aren't that sneaky. -via reddit

Chicken wire and tar paper are not going to keep Sofia inside, because she has a plan! You get the idea she's done this before -which is probably why the camera was trained on the pen. -Thanks, Mauricio Zapata!

If I don't turn away now, I could be doing this all day! This game asks you so assemble parts of words. You can select the difficulty level. Your score will be measured in words completed, number of errors, and time spent; then you can see how your scores compare with others who have played the game. http://www.boomj.com/?page=games/default&brainGame=87 -via b3ta
With hurricane season in full force, Jalopnik has some tips that might come in handy for those living near the coasts.
Link -Thanks, Freshome!
Evacuating from a hurricane involves more than just getting into your car and driving away from the coast. Of the estimated 120 deaths associated with Hurricane Rita, 107 of them were related to the mass vehicular evacuation rather than the storm itself. With hurricane watches being issued for the Mid-Atlantic and a major hurricane approaching the Bahamas, we thought it was a good time to review the proper steps an individual should take when evacuating from a storm in a motor vehicle.

Maybe you've seen the classic map that shows how single women are concentrated on the East coast of the US, and single men outnumber women on the West Coast. Here's a version you can adjust for age! Of course, if you are a woman my age, you might not want to know.... Link -via Metafilter
Bernie Marks is practicing singing the Torah for his Bar Mitzvah, the Jewish ceremony that marks the symbolic passage to manhood. But at 78, Marks is a bit past the traditional age. When he was 13, he was living in a Polish ghetto under Nazi rule. Later, his family was sent to Auschwitz where he last saw his mother and brother. Marks and his father were sent to a labor camp until they were liberated by US forces in 1945. Rabbi Mona Alfi is delighted that Marks will finally be Bar Mitzvahed.

"It was always my desire to fulfill the dream that my father and grandfathers had," Marks said. "For years, older men weren't afforded the opportunity because it wasn't traditional. But times have changed, and Rabbi Alfi is more progressive."
So Marks, who speaks 10 languages and was trained by his grandfathers who were both rabbis, is scheduled to be bar mitzvahed Sept. 20.
"He's definitely the oldest," said Alfi. And she's never heard of a Holocaust survivor having a bar mitzvah.
