Robocop on a Unicorn

Yes, you read correctly. Robocop and Unicorn are united in a meme that is sweeping the internet (and possibly ridding it of wrong doers at the same time?). Yet what is the point, if indeed there is one? Take a look at this web-based phenomenon and make up your own mind.

This game is supposed to challenge your concentration and reaction time. I had fun playing it, but had a hard time taking a picture of it, because it kept running away from me! Link -via Digg

Dog Risks Life for Kittens

A dog named Leo stayed behind in a burning home in Melbourne, Australia, to guard a box of kittens! Four family members and one dog escaped the fire.
"But Leo was still inside standing over the kittens, and we were scared he would get burned," she said. "We couldn't find Sabrina (mother of the kittens) and we thought they would all die."

The children sobbed with relief when firefighters rescued and revived 11-month-old Leo.

"Then we were told there was a box of kittens still in there, and firefighters returned to grab them too," Cdr Brown said.

He said Leo licked the kittens with joy when he saw them. "It was a wonderful sight," he said.

The kittens were unharmed because a cover on their box stopped them suffering smoke inhalation.

Firefighters plan to nominate Leo for an honor to acknowledge his bravery. Link -Thanks, Larfin Jackarse!

Thriller Record Set in Austin

Last year, the project Thrill the World brought 1722 people together around the world for a simultaneous Thriller dance. The event was repeated Saturday, with 3960 zombie dancers participating! The largest group was in Austin, Texas, where 881 dancers did the Thriller dance together on the patio at the Long Center. Thrill the World Austin has video and links to many pictures of the event. Another Zombie Record

On October 26th, 2008, zombies clumped together to break the Guinness Book Of World Records for "Most Attended Zombie Walk". It was one of the many events held at the weekend long Zombie Fest, at the Monroeville Mall. This is the same mall where the original Dawn Of The Dead was filmed. I sat at a table selling copies of my book of zombie haiku, but sneaked away during the zombie walk to take most of these pictures.

Egg Cups

It makes sense to design a special dish for a food that tends to roll around on a plate. But who knew there were so many modern variations of the simple egg cup? Gomestic has ten of them; my favorite is this combination egg timer and egg cup. Link -Thanks, RJ Evans!

Thriller A Cappella

(MySpace Video link)

François Macré recorded Thriller using 64 tracks of only his voice! A Babelfish translation from the French description:
Description: Here a resumption of the title “Thriller” which I completely recorded with the voice. I thus imitated each element of the original title (instrumental, vocal, rhythmic elements and sound effects) by using 64 superimposed audio-video tracks (as this clip attests it; -). This recovery is thus a piece of a' cappella multitrack, comprising only the sound of my voice, without addition of any instrument, sampler, limps for deforming rate/rhythm or purposes (only effects used being of Réverb and light Chorus). Moreover, I used the technique of the loop for the parts which are repeated (like the rhythmic one). Finally, on the whole of the piece (which contains thousands of notes distributed on the whole of the tracks), I transposed 8 notes which were impossible for me to sing in the acute ones.

Perhaps that does not have the air, but this musical project proved to be relatively titanic! At all events, I hope that you will take as much pleasure to listen to this piece than I had of it to record it. Thank you, in advance, to encourage me by your comments. Good listening and in Bientôt.

-Thanks, Pablozoide!

Mr. Green Genes

Last year we told you about cats that glow red. Mr. Green Genes is a cat in New Orleans that glows green! In normal light, he appears to be a regular orange tomcat, but he exudes a green flourescent glow under ultraviolet light.

The six-month-old cat was created by scientists who are trying to combat a range of diseases such as cystic fibrosis. They modified his DNA to see if a gene could be introduced harmlessly into an animal's genetic sequence. To track where the gene went, they decided to use one that glowed under ultraviolet light. The particular gene in question, known as green fluorescence protein, is likely to express itself in mucous membranes - hence his freakish mouth and ears.

Cornea Working for 123 Years

An 80-year-old man in Oslo, Norway can still see with a 123-year-old transplanted cornea, although his vision is no longer great. Bernt Aune received the transplant in 1958. The donor was a man born in 1885!
"I wouldn't be surprised if this is the oldest living organ in the world," eye doctor Hasan Hasanain at Namsos hospital told the Norwegian daily Verdens Gang.

In the 1950s, doctors expected it to work for just five years, Hasanain said. Such cornea operations date back to the early 20th century and were among the first successful transplants.

"It wasn't unusual to use corneas from elderly people who had died," Aune said.
