Bacon Mobius Strip

Infinite bacon? I'm afraid not, since it is "not delicious but also vegan and kosher friendly." But This 3D printed Mobius strip, designed by joabaldwin, is clearly representative of the idea of infinite bacon. What's it really made of? That's …not specified, but I would guess some type of plastic. Link -Thanks, Duann!

8 Wonderful Terraced Pools Around the World

Looks ice cold, doesn't it? Actually, the water is quite warm at the Pamukkale terraces in Turkey. The white formations are deposits of minerals from spring water that built up into a series of dams, making the terraced pools what they are. That process is typical of the eight places featured in this list, although the geography and minerals (and therefore the appearance) of the terraces varies. The pictures are gorgeous! The Fascinating History Of The Garbage Truck

Once upon a time, city garbage was removed by crews in horse-drawn wagons. Men lifted every bit by hand and if they overfilled the wagon, debris would fly off the top as the wagon proceeded.

The idea of an enclosed trash truck, so things wouldn't fly out at speed, was started in Europe in the 1920s. It's actually kind of amazing it took someone that long to think of that, but anyway. The Americans thought of the waste hauler we're more familiar with today, the external hopper truck.

But the reason these trucks surged in popularity was because of a man named George Roby Dempster.

Dempster was from Knoxville, Tenn. and a businessman who made his mark in construction and road building before the Great Depression wiped him out. With a background in stuff that required heavy machinery, though, Dempster knew how much labor was required in hauling stuff. He saw garbage trucks of the time and the amount of effort needed for men to throw things into the bed of a truck.

If the name sounds familiar, it's because of Dempster's invention that revolutionized the trash collection industry. Read about it at Jalopnik. Link -via the Presurfer

Poll Watching

This late in the presidential election season, doesn't it seem like we've turned from deciding who will be our president for the next four years to watching a never-ending horse race? Randall Munroe at xkcd noticed that our obsession with the polls that shift ever-so-slightly from day to day obscure that fact that this, like all races, must eventually reach a finish line. Link

Saudi Gangnam Style

(YouTube link)

Gangnam Style in Saudi Arabia? Apparently so, as the comments on the YouTube page are mostly in Arabic, and there are no "sexy ladies" in this video. Oh, you might think you see a couple, but I would bet there are guys under those abayas. What's more, this video has garnered two million views in two days. -via Viral Viral Videos

Rare Animated Stereoviews of Geishas in the 1800s

Japanese photographer Nobukuni Enami took stereoscopic photographs of 19th-century Geisha, which were hand-colored and shown by viewing a different photo with the left and right eye.

Because it’s unlikely that you’ve got your own vintage stereoscopic viewer lying around, many of these images are animated GIFS that photographer Guy Thiophene has created to give you an idea of what they would have looked like in 3D. Thiophene converted the images into GIFS from stereo images found in the extensive collection of Rob Oechsle (known on Flickr as Okinawa Soba), who has been collecting the photographs since 1973.

See a collection of these pictures, and learn more about Geisha at Environmental Graffiti. Link

12 Things You Might Not Know About Wyatt Earp

Neatorama presents a guest post from actor, comedian, and voiceover artist Eddie Deezen. Visit Eddie at his website.

One of my all-time favorite films is Tombstone (1993), the greatest Western ever made -in my opinion (and with all due respect to the great John Wayne, who I love and am a major fan of). Tombstone being my favorite Western, I developed an interest in the film's central character, Wyatt Earp. I have recently read my first proper biographies of Earp, and man, this guy just blows my socks off! What a fascinating, bigger-than-life character, right out of a great Western novel. I have read hundreds and hundreds of biographies and autobiographies of men and women of every possible stripe, but this guy is, without a doubt, one of the most incredible characters I have ever read about.

Okay, let me tell you twelve things you may not have known about that legendary lawman from the Old West, Mr. Wyatt Earp.

1. Wyatt Berry Stapp Earp (yep, that's his full name) ran away from home several times and tried to enlist in the Union Army in the Civil War. He was unsuccessful and was sent back home every time, as he was only 13 years old.

2. He loved ice cream. He wasn't a hard drinker. In fact, he wasn't a drinker at all. No, the great Wyatt Earp, as macho as they come, never let liquor touch his lips. But he did have a vice: his love of ice cream. Every day in Tombstone, he would stop into the local ice cream parlor and indulge in a scoop.

3. He was arrested for horse theft along with two other men. Wyatt and the other men were accused of stealing two horses (each worth $100) and jailed. Instead of waiting for his trial, Wyatt broke out of jail and escaped through the jail roof.

4. He never was hit or injured during a gun fight. No, not in any gunfight he was ever involved in, which contributed to his legend.

A Dinosaur Named Sauron

A dinosaur discovered through a fossil found in Morocco has been named Sauron, after the Lord of the Rings character. Paleontologists Andrea Cau, Fabio Dalla Vecchia, and Matteo Fabbri of Italy’s Museo Paleontologico di Montevarchi described the dinosaur as best they could. Only a small part of the skull was found, but it was enough to determine that this dinosaur did not belong to a known species.

While the rest of the dinosaur remains unknown, after reanalyzing the frontal the paleontologists decided that it was truly unique enough to merit establishing a new name. The subtly-domed dinosaur is now known as Sauroniops pachytholus–the genus name a tribute to the demonic Sauron of the Lord of the Rings series, and the species name for the thick dome on the dinosaur’s head.

The dinosaur and human skull are illustrated for scale, not to suggest the dinosaur's diet. Link -via Ed Yong

Puking Kitty Gravy Boat

Glass sculptor Ginger ELA, inspired by a squirrel, made herself a gravy boat in the shape of a cat. The gravy is poured out of the cat's mouth. The effect is that of a cat barfing up delicious gravy, syrup, or whatever you put in. What a lovely sight to see! You can watch the gravy kitty in action in a video at her site. "The birth of so many baby giant pandas is a testament to the success of our breeding programme."

Sprinkles

Sometimes it helps to know whether the bakery person writing down your instructions for cake decoration will be the same person that actually decorates it. But then again, that might not help at all! Cake Wrecks has other examples in a post of cake instructions that ended upon the cake itself. The next time the kids ask me to put sprinkles on a cake I'm baking, I'm going to do just this. Link
