Tiny Hamster in a Tiny Mansion

(YouTube link)

The tiny hamster is back! We’ve seen him eat a tiny burrito and go to a tiny hedgehog birthday party, and now we get to see the hamster in his tiny mansion. He gets out of his tiny bed, eats his tiny breakfast, takes a tiny bath, eats a great big strawberry, and drives off in his tiny little car. -via Viral Viral Videos

If You're Born In The Sky, What's Your Nationality?

If a pregnant American woman boards a German flight to the Maldives and gives birth while flying over Pakistan, does the baby get Pakistani citizenship?

There is an ancient doctrine, enshrined in English common law, that says Cuius est solum, eius est usque ad coelum et ad inferos, which means, "Whoever owns the soil, it is theirs all the way up to heaven and down to hell."

That was the old rule, before the advent of air balloons, then airplanes, then V2 rockets, then spy satellites. It's been seriously amended (at least in Britain) to a much more modest: You own the airspace necessary for "the use and enjoyment" of your plot of land. So how high up is that?

We can assume that American parents would not allow any legal move to take away their child’s American citizenship. And does the old rules of ships’ registries apply to airplanes? It appears that no one knows the definitive answer about “sky babies,” and it largely depends on the citizenship laws of individual nations, Some allow for dual or triple citizenship, others don’t. Do Not Enter

This sign makes it very clear that you are not to go in here. It also addresses the possibility that you look at such signs and say, “Or else what?” like I sometimes do. The consequences are clear. -via reddit

All-Bacon Restaurant in Montreal

Montreal will soon have a restaurant and bar that serves bacon food and bacon drinks in a bacon atmosphere. Anthoni Jodoin figured everyone would like a butcher shop-inspired eatery with plenty of bacon on the menu, and so he presents Bar Brutus, featuring bacon sandwiches, bacon hot dogs, bacon martinis, bacon vodka, bacon-wrapped everything else, and yes, even bacon poutine! Their Facebook page is in French, but it has plenty of pictures. Newsweek profiled the business, and says,

The restaurant will put a twist on beloved snacks and comfort food, including the very special 100 percent–bacon hot dogs, which Jodoin thinks are the tastiest item on the menu. In case you were worried about not being able to clog your arteries and get drunk at the same time on food, Bar Brutus has you covered with the Jagerpoutine—french fries topped with cheese, bacon and caramelized onions drizzled with a Jagermeister gravy.

Bar Brutus will be open as soon as it receives it liquor license. Meanwhile, we can dream. -via Geeks Are Sexy

Mouth-to-mouth Resuscitation Saves Koala

Emergency workers in Melbourne, Australia, received a call Thursday night about a koala that had been hit by a car. They arrived at the scene and found the koala had climbed a tree, but as they tried to retrieve it, it fell about 10 meters, where firefighters caught it in a blanket.

Langwarrin fire brigade captain Sean Curtin said fire crews and wildlife authorities quickly got to reviving Sir Chompsalot.

"Wildlife Victoria actually performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the koala and one of the other members was actually pumping the koala's chest to get some movement in the heart and also get some air into the lungs at the same time," he said.

"We put it on O2 oxygen therapy to assist in getting some oxygen into the blood flow of the koala."

One of the firefighters had experience, as he had revived a dog once with mouth-to-mouth. Sir Chompsalot, as the rescuers named him, is recovering at a local animal hospital. With video. -via Boing Boing

Kitten and Lampshade

This kitten has found the perfect toy- a crocheted lampshade cover! The kitten is funny enough, but Grandma can’t stop giggling in the background. She was probably the one who made that cover, and now she reaps the rewards. -via Arbroath

He Caught All 719 Pokémon

Gotta catch ‘em all! Matthew Sullivan did just that: he caught all 719 Pokémon, a project that started in his childhood and became an obsession as he got closer to his goal. He tells us how he did it, although only another gamer would understand.

Now I will say I love breeding pokémon and never shy away from breeding pokémon for other people — I'm doing that as you read this article - but collecting and hatching around 300 eggs can wear you down. Then the thought of evolving half of them was equally daunting but slowly, overtime, I got it done. With 820 minutes on the clock I had obtained all but a few pokémon. I was so close I could taste it and it was sweet!

Sullivan’s goal took almost two decades, and six generations of Pokémon. If you know something about Pokémon, you can read his story at Polygon.

True Facts About Marsupials

(YouTube link)

Ze Frank is back with more true facts, this time about an entire group of animals, the marsupials. Marsupials include kangaroos, wombats, Tasmanian devils, and Koalas. Some of the details of marsupial’s lives may be quite gross, so consider yourself warned. Contains NSFW language, plus, well, it’s Ze Frank, who is a master of double entendres about wildlife. -via Daily Picks and Flicks

17 Facts About The Harlem Globetrotters

The following is reprinted from the book Uncle John's Unsinkable Bathroom Reader.

(Image credit: Doha Stadium Plus Qatar)

Ever seen the Harlem Globetrotters play? Millions have. With tricks, acrobatics, and amazing basketball skills, they turned sports into entertainment.

* The team began in 1926 as an independent touring team called the Savoy Big Five, named after a Chicago district.

* For their first game, the team wore jerseys that read “New York” because their owner Abe Saperstein figured people would believe they were world-class athletes if they were from New York.

* They were renamed the Harlem Globetrotters in 1929 -Harlem because most of the team was African-American, Globetrotters to create the (false) image of “experience.”

* By 1940 they’d played 2,000 games and dominated whatever team they played, including high school teams, college teams, and semipro squads. Their record that season: 159-8.

* One night in 1939, the Globetrotters were leading their opponent 112 to 5. The crowd was bored, so Globetrotter Inman Jackson started fooling around on the court, doing finger rolls, taking (and making) full- and half-court shots, shooting from under his leg, and throwing crazy passes to teammates. The crowd loved it. Saperstein told the team to do that every night.

* In a February 1948 exhibition, the Globetrotters beat the NBA champion Minneapolis Lakers. The game is credited to leading the NBA to begin admitting black players in 1950.

A Lesson Learned the Hard Way

He told her he didn’t need to find a wall stud, because he had half-inch toggle bolts. It worked for about a month, but when it did’t, it was a complete disaster. It took some guts for northfoggybrook to post the picture, but it was too funny not to. Along with some funny jokes and endless ribbing, commenters were glad to give advice on how to hang your TV on the wall the right way. That is, for when he can afford to buy another TV.

When Postcards Made Every Town Seem Glamorous

From the 1930s to the 1950s, Americans were urged to hit the road in their automobiles and travel the newly-built highways to see places where they could spend tourist dollars. We are still encouraged to do so, but during that heyday you could get a souvenir postcard from just about any small town you passed through. These were the large letter postcards, usually with “Greetings from” at the top, and pictures of the area in each letter of the place name. Several companies made them, but they are getting harder to find now. The most famous example is above, the postcard that was adapted as the cover of Bruce Springsteen’s first album.

Fred Tenney and Kevin Hilbert are serious collectors of large letter postcards, and have recently published the book Large Letter Postcards: The Definitive Guide, 1930s to 1950s. You can see dozens of examples, and get the story of the cards from the authors in a post at Collectors Weekly.

Baby Got Class

(YouTube link)

Someone call Alex and tell him there’s a new parody of his favorite song!

It’s time for kids to go back to school, and the Holderness Family (previously at Neatorama) made a little song about it, to the tune of “Baby Got Back” by Sir Mix-a-Lot. Back to school time is a hassle, but after a couple of months of dealing with bored and always-hungry kids, it’s worth the effort. -via Tastefully Offensive

Little Boy is Thankful for Prank Gift

(YouTube link)

A little boy opens a birthday gift and finds that it’s a wooden chopping board. Amazingly, he remarks that it is nice and he’ll use it. And he thanks his parents. Aww!

Then he gets another gift, in a shoebox. His mom mentions that he won’t have to glue his sneakers anymore… which leads us to believe that the family is far from wealthy. The boy thinks he is getting new sneakers and is happy about it -until he sees what’s really in the box. That’s when we who are watching go all verklempt. He’s a good boy. A part of the YouTube description is translated as “"Humility is synonymous with greatness.”

You can see a direct translation of the conversation from a YouTube commenter if you like. -via reddit
