Cow in the House

(YouTube link)

This is what happens when you take your eyes off a five-year-old for five minutes. Billie Jo Decker found that her daughter Breanna had let her pet calf into the house! The calf seems to enjoy the adventure. Decker didn’t lose her cool, and in fact was pretty amused by the situation. She just grabbed a camera and recorded Breanna’s attempts at explanation- and it eventually leads to an adorable moment of affection between Breanna and her beloved calf. -via Daily Picks and Flicks

A Deep Look At The Droid In The New Star Wars Trailer

While everyone and their brother on the internet is deconstructing the Star Wars VII teaser (because that’s all we have), Jalopnik wants to focus on the new style droid we got to see.

So, just to prepare everyone, this is going to get pretty damn geeky up in here, so put on whatever protective gear you may need to protect yourself. And know that I'm going to be writing about this from a perspective within the Star Wars universe, and in that universe there is a healthy and competitive market for droids, and I'll be pulling liberally from other canon and canon-ish Star Wars sources. Okay? Let's get all geeky up in here.

He’s right: the discussion includes a categorization of astromech droids, the R-series, possible reasons for the spherical body, and how it may be designed for real work in the Star Wars universe. You’ll understand it if you’re a hardcore fan, but if not, you will learn more about droids than you ever thought you would. -via Digg

The Gigantic, Secretive Market Where France’s Top Chefs Buy Their Food

The largest wholesale food market in the world is the Rungis International Market, about a half hour outside of Paris. The city’s top chefs, restaurants, hotels, grocers, and smaller food markets get fresh meat, fish, produce, and other perishables there every day. The market covers 573 acres and 11,000 people work there. Author Cody Delistraty takes us on a tour of the facility, which is not open to the general public. First, the fish processing building, then the butcher area.

Then to the cheese warehouse, where giant wheels of Gruyère and Emmental are stacked atop one another to entice restaurant buyers; followed by the vegetables warehouse, where leeks and ginger and asparagus and kale sit in wooden boxes littered throughout the room; and then, finally, to the flowers warehouse, where asters and callas and carnations and dahlias and hyacinths and peonies and poinsettias burst with reds and pinks and blues and purples in a wonderful display.

It’s only after seeing all of the warehouses that you realize the immense power that Rungis holds over the French food industry.

How to Eat the Last Cheese Puff

Random Acts of Pasta

(YouTube link)

Matt Tribe bought an Olive Garden Never Ending Pasta Pass, and then sort of regretted it, because who needs to eat that much pasta? But he had an idea: giving pasta meals to the homeless! Just hand out lunch, it’s not difficult. This video will warm your heart.

It's very possible that Olive Garden will not like this. It violates the terms for the Never Ending Pasta Pass, which is non-transferable, and can not be used for anyone besides the pass holder. What if other Pasta Pass holders start to get the bright idea of sharing dinner with the hungry? On the other hand, if Olive Garden raised a fuss against Tribe for his good deeds, it would only make them look bad. All that they reasonably could do is never have a promotion like this again.

Then again, many commenters at reddit say this is viral marketing from Olive Garden, because the Pasta Pass promotion is over. Maybe it will never happen again. -via Viral Viral Videos

Will we ever be able to let go of Breaking Bad? Maybe not, when fans keep giving us treats like this supercut from Matthijs Vlot. Vlot made a rap song out of clips from the TV show that rhymes, holds a proper beat, and does not rely on autotune or other tricks outside of old-fashioned editing. It’s just Walter, Jesse, and the other characters saying the things they said. The result is catnip for fans of the show! -via Warming Glow

[Ed. note: this post is in honor of Spielberg's 68th birthday today.]

You know him as the director who brought us Jaws,  E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, and Saving Private Ryan, among many other films. But there’s probably a lot that you didn’t know about Steven Spielberg. In honor of the filmmaker's 68th birthday today, let's learn some more about him.

* The first movie Steven Spielberg ever saw was The Greatest Show on Earth (1953).

* Steven has one of the largest gun collections on the East Coast. He shoots, but only privately.

* His all-time favorite cartoon character is Daffy Duck.

* He cast his cocker spaniel, Elmer, in several of his films, including Close Encounters of the Third Kind, 1941, The Sugarland Express, and Jaws.

Dog Visits Hospital for Two Years Waiting for Deceased Owner

A little dog named Masha went to the hospital in Novosibirsk, Siberia, Russia, with her owner when he was admitted two years ago, and then visited him every day. But when he passed away, Masha returned again and again. And she still goes there every day, waiting for her master.

Masha has become a well-known, and much loved, figure at the Novosibirsk District Hospital Number One, where patients and workers ensure she has a warm bed and food to eat.

But, aware of her obvious sadness at being unable to find her owner, staff are hoping an animal lover will come forward to adopt her and give her a new home.

Chief doctor Vladimir Bespalov told Novosibirsk Vesti TV: 'You see her eyes, how sad they are - it’s not the usual shiny eyes for when a dog is happy. You can see this in animals in the same way as with people.

'There is nothing medicine can do for her here, but we are still hoping that Masha will be able to find another owner. One day, and we very much want this day to come soon, our Masha will trust somebody.'

Masha has been compared to Hachiko, the dog who waited for his owner at the train station for eleven years after the man died. Read more about Masha at The Siberian Times. -via Daily of the Day

Red Pandas Climb on Zookeeper

(YouTube link)

These little red pandas really loves their zookeeper. Either that, or they consider the guy to be just another tree to climb and explore! Or maybe they always like to cause trouble, like when one of them knocks the guy’s hat off. These pandas live at the the Maruyama Zoo in Sapporo, Japan. -via Daily Picks and Flicks

The World’s Longest Straightaway

Imagine a highway that doesn’t bend, climb, or turn. That’s Eyre Highway, which crosses the Nullarbor Plain in Western Australia. The highway is a thousand miles long, running from Norseman to Port Augusta in South Australia. It has a 145.6 km stretch that has no bends or stops (and little scenery) between the towns of Balladonia and Caiguna known as the "90 Mile Straight.”

Eyre Highway can be best described as a long and lonely road. While in the East you still find some towns like Kimba, Wudinna and Ceduna, the western three quarters is almost devoid of life. This section lies almost entirely on the Nullarbor Plain. The typical view is that of a straight highway and practically unchanging flat saltbush-covered terrain, although some parts are located on ridges. Spread throughout the length of the highway at approximately 200 km to 300 km apart are roadhouses providing basic services such as fuel, food, refreshments, accommodation and repairs, but not all are open 24 hours. Because of its remoteness, some sections of the Highway serve as emergency airstrips for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. These airstrips are signposted and have runway "piano keys" painted on the road, and turnaround bays for small aircraft.

How Anna Became Elsa

Aspiring model and singer Anna Faith Carlson never considered that a single picture posted on Instagram would make her into a Disney Princess, but that’s what happened. Her resemblance to Queen Elsa from the Disney movie Frozen has opened the doors to a new career.

Carlson’s journey as Elsa began during a trip to the Altamonte Mall with her mother, Karen, and younger sister, Lexus, who convinced her to pose next to a cardboard cutout of the Disney character.

“I said, ‘Whatever, I’ll just take the picture,’” she recalled. She posted it that night on her Instagram account. “It blew up from there.”

The notoriety landed her spots on Good Morning America, Fox News and in publications like the New York Daily News, Time Magazine and Cosmopolitan.

Nineteen-year-old Carlson began making appearance at birthday parties, hospitals, charities, and schools. She is accompanied by her 15-year-old sister Lexie, who dresses as Anna. They were even flown to Dubai to appear at a young girl’s birthday party.

The Walking Dead Death Watch

Sunday night is the mid-season finale of The Walking Dead, and then it goes away until probably February or so, then return for another eight episodes. Fans of the show pretty much expect one of the main characters to die, because

1. Someone always dies in the mid-season finale.
2. The Talking Dead, the after show discussion, is promoting a “mystery cast member,” which means the actor whose character just died.
3. Norman Reedus, who plays Daryl, said that he cried over this particular episode.

Warming Glow is laying down the odds on who’s going to buy the farm on the next episode. Who do you think it will be? Place your prediction in the poll. The characters' names in order correspond to the cast photo above.

Who will die Sunday on The Walking Dead?

Real Santa Clauses

ExPhysGuy posted a picture at reddit of a man in Ireland who fills the role of Santa Claus at the local schools. Even when he’s off-duty, he takes his role seriously for the little kids who see him. There were several stories in the comments underneath that show appreciation for men like this who take time to be Santa Claus for kids, because they know that children will recognize them wherever they are, no matter what time of the year it is.

We got a great story from this_wasamistake.

So, my uncle used to look a lot like Santa pretty much all the time. Pot belly, deep but kind voice, sweet grey beard, the works. Just like this guy here.

One year in the fall he drove home from the grocery store, and when he got inside, noticed a car drove up and parked right in front of his house. No one came out for awhile so he went to check it out, when some guy got out of the car and approached him. The dude had two kids in the car, who had seen my uncle at the store, and just cried and cried to their dad how he was "letting Santa get away!" so they made him drive after my uncle. The guy was real apologetic and asked if my uncle can just say hi to his kids, but my uncle being the amazing person he was, ran inside to get them cookies, and sure to talk to them awhile. The kids left happy as clams and I'm sure the dad got major dad points.

I just really miss my uncle. The idea of people thinking about him, even just for the duration of this post, makes me not miss him so badly.

From timforreal:

They've had the same Santa at my local mall for at least 12 years, and he is fantastic. He's got a real beard, has a personally owned awesome looking suit, is great with kids etc. I've seen him do the same thing when it's the "off season" and he's at the mall doing his shopping.

There were rumors that he was retiring 2 years ago, and I was very happy to see that he was still there last year. It will be difficult to replace someone as good as him.

Read this cute story from blissfully_happy.

I was in the back of my suburban, digging around one day, while my boyfriend was in the grocery store. A man walked passed our truck and saw my partner's 5-year-old sitting in the back seat. He said to him (through the open window), "Hi, there! You're being good, right?"

I popped my head up and said, "He is," thinking this dude must be a friend of his mom or dad's (we live in a small town).

He walked away, and I said, "Do you know that guy?"

Kid: "No, but I'm pretty sure Santa just told me to behave."

Thanks, random bearded stranger. Good work.

ChrisTR15 tell us about a co-worker.

There is a guy that works with me who looks like Santa. WHEN EVER a kid comes up to him, he reaches in his backpack and gives him a candy cane and a Christmas card. Saw it in mid July a few years ago. Was sweet.

Alpaca_Rancher had an uncle who looked like Santa.

My Great Uncle was a professional Mall Santa. He had a big white beard and wore red all year around. It really did look spot on. He loved kids always coming up to him and enjoyed it all year around. I seriously thought he was santa till I was like 10.

And mcketten summed up how it works.

There is a professional Santa in my hometown. All Christmas season he is in another state, playing Santa at a mall. However, all year he keeps his beard and hair trimmed, wears his glasses, and always wears clothing that involves red and green and suspenders at a minimum.

He never breaks character for any child. He also has some great stories, like when he was walking down the street and a kid came running up to him crying because he was lost but then saw Santa and knew he would be fine.

I've talked to him several times about it and he said, "Being Santa is one of the greatest responsibilities I have ever had. It is a way of life, not a job, and you have to treat it that way."

Jimmy Fallon’s Holiday Song Parodies 2014

(YouTube link)

Jimmy Fallon continued his annual tradition of making the year’s biggest pop songs into holiday song parodies on The Tonight Show. Fallon got a hand from Rashida Jones in putting holiday cheer into songs you know or at least recognize from 2014. You want to sing along? Here are the lyrics:

“All About That Bass”
Yeah, my mama she cooked me a turkey with all the sides
Then she made me some cranberry sauce and then 12 pumpkin pies
Because you know I'm gonna gain some weight, gain some weight (need sweatpants)
I'm gonna gain some weight, gain some weight (need sweatpants)

“Stay With Me”
Oh won’t you, drink with me?
I hate my, family
They’re insane, it’s plain to see
So won’t you, drink with me?

“Turn Down For What”
Stuff a duck, inside a turkey’s butt…
Turducken for what?
Turducken for what?

“Wiggle”
You know what to do on this Hanukkah
Dreidel dreidel dreidel
Dreidel dreidel dreidel

“Anaconda”
My Secret Santa don't –
My Secret Santa don't –
My Secret Santa don't want none unless you got gifts, hon!

“Bang Bang”
I’ve got a special thing I like to drink, when I get thirsty and it’s Christmastime
Just take some nutmeg and some cinnamon, and then you mix it up it tastes so fine
Egg nog!
Into your mug (Just add some whiskey)
Egg nog!
Getting you drunk (I’m feelin’ tipsy)

“Let It Go”
Mistletoe, mistletoe
Just bought a bunch at the store
Mistletoe, mistletoe
Gonna hang it from my door
I don’t care who I kiss today
Let your tongue stick out
Cold sores never bothered me anyway

“Fireball”
Butterball
Christmas ball
He had a big red suit
With a sack full of loot
With eight reindeers and a sleigh
Had a big round belly like a bowl full of jelly
And he came around on Christmas day…
Santa Claus!
