Water Taste Test

The folks at NPR wondered if $55 Bling H2O really tasted better than other bottled waters. They conducted a taste test featuring Bling H2O, normally-priced bottled water, and Manhattan tap water, and posted a video report. I don’t think the results will really surprise you. Link -via Metafilter

1910 Prints of the Future

Paleo-Future has a series of French prints from 1910 depicting what life will be like in the year 2000. Some are precient, although the art is quaintly Victorian. Others, such as this woman being made up in her robotic bathroom, are still beyond us. Link -via Reddit

Similicio.us

Similicio.us is an application that finds websites that appeal to similar tastes, using delicio.us bookmarks.
This is an experiment to see whether I can quickly find relevant web sites based on people's tags/bookmarks on del.icio.us, using a home-brewed association engine. It answers the question "people who tagged this site also tagged what other sites". I am using it mostly to find blogs that are similar to the ones I read, and to find new popular web sites that are in my area.

For example, if you like Neatorama, here is a list of other sites you might like. You can enter any URL and find a list of associated sites. You can also add this application to your browser toolbar. Link -via Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories

Operation Babylift

(YouTube link)

Operation Babylift: The Lost Children of Vietnam is a documentary scheduled for release in 2008. It was directed by Tammy Nguyen Lee, founder of Against the Grain Productions.

"Operation Babylift" was a $2 million dollar US initiative that airlifted over 2,000 Vietnamese orphans out of a war-torn country to protect them from the impending threat of the Communist Regime. Coined by some as "one of the most humanitarian efforts in history," it was also plagued by lawsuits and political turmoil. Even with the best intentions, these adoptees grew up facing a unique set of challenges in America, including prejudice overshadowed by a controversial war and cultural identity crisis. Now, over thirty years later, this documentary takes a candid look at a significant yet untold event as seen through the eyes of the volunteers, parents, and organizations directly involved, as well as uncovers the "lost" stories of the the adoptees and who they have become as adults. This documentary is not just a a historical piece, but gives a contemporary voice and perspective on international adoption today through the eyes of the adoptees themselves.

Voyager Turns 30

The space probe Voyager I was launched 30 years ago, and is still operational. Voyager is more than 103 astronomical units away from Earth (an astronomical unit is 93 million miles, so that’s roughly 9.5 billion miles away). Signals from the probe take 13 hours to reach earth, traveling at the speed of light. A Wired slideshow features some of the better images taken from the Voyager program since 1977. This image is a composite of photos of Jupiter and its moons taken in 1979. Link
