My mother was hardcore- she held an onion in one hand and diced it with the other, because she didn't have a cutting board. So that's how I did it for 40 years or so, even though I eventually got a cutting board. I learned the safe way to chop an onion from YouTube.

Smoking was a big factor, but didn't explain all of it. My grandmother never smoked (neither did grandpa) but she looked older at 50 than my mother (her daughter-in-law) looked at 85. It was style, plus mom had much better dental care.
Looking back further in my memory, my maternal grandma, who had six kids and rolled her own cigarettes, looked older than everyone and died at 46.

I saw the picture of the standing cat and thought it looked weirdly familiar. I finally realized that this is the pose that Max uses a few times in the book Where the Wild Things Are.
