The Seal Avengers

Too cute to be threatening? Just wait until Disney on Ice gets a crack at presenting The Avengers. Then you'll see this idea by cartoonist Sketchlock given the respect that it deserves. You can find cartoons of other team members at the link.

Baseball Fan Has Caught 5,800 Balls in the Stands

Zach Hample is a ballhawk: someone who tries to catch baseballs hit or thrown out into the stands.

But that doesn't say enough. Zach Hample is the ultimate, professional ballhawk. He's caught more than 5,800 of them because he studies the layout of ballparks, the stand-throwing habits of particular players, and ways of presenting himself so that players will find him appealing. Hample is a master of his craft, and he's passed on his knowledge by writing a book to enlighten those who wish to become effective ballhawks.

The Sketched Tattoos of Peter Aurisch

I've never seen tattoo work like that of the Berlin-based artist Peter Aurisch. He creates surreal worlds that appear to be penciled in instead of inked in.

Strawberry Shortsnake

This adorable treat from FamilyFun magazine will require a careful hand for the decorative work, but it'll be worth it. The eyes are made from green M&Ms and the tongue from "fruit leather", which is another name for a fruit roll-up.

Thespian Transformers Tattoo

Let us celebrate the 448th birthday of The Bard and his transforming impact on English literature.

This image seems appropriate for the occasion. Back in college, Fashionably Geek reader Rebecca got this tattoo showing the masks of tragedy and comedy as Autobots and Decepticons.

Game Theory in Action in a Game Show

(Video Link)

This scenario isn't the Prisoner's Dilemma, but it's similar. The host of Golden Balls explains:

Ibrahim, Nick, you have two final golden balls in front of you and they are the most important golden balls of the game. You each have a golden ball with the word 'Split' written inside. You both have a ball with the word 'Steal' written inside. You will know which is Split and which is Steal because you're going to have a look. If you both pick the Split ball, you split the £13,600 and you go home with £6,800 each. If one of you chooses the Steal ball and the other chooses the Split ball whoever chooses the Steal ball goes home with the whole lot -- £13,600. But if you both choose the Steal ball, you leave today's game with what you came with: nothing. It's the ultimate test of faith, trust and -- let's face it -- greed. Take a moment to look at the balls in front of you so know for definite which is Split and which is Steal.

Nick immediately announces his intentions. Do you think that he chose wisely?

Batman Burgers

I'm not going to eat you. I want you to do me a favor. I want you to tell all your friends about me. I'm Batburger.

Jill of Kitchen Fun with My Three Sons made these hamburgers out of cheese, beef and barbecue sauce.

"Did You Put Any Thought into This?"

(Video Link)

Two guys are trying to move a honey bee colony without any specialized equipment. One is calm and confident; the other is nervous and uncertain. Judging from the conversation, they've been in situations like this before:

“They’re not stinging you. Have you been stung yet?”

“You also said the skunk wouldn’t spray me either!”

Add Insects to Your Cupcakes for Extra Protein

Just add some mealworms. They're good for you! The authors of The Insect Cookbook propose that people look toward insects as food:

"I see this as the next step towards the introduction of insects on restaurant menus in the Netherlands. I also expect people to buy the book and start cooking with insects at home," said Marcel Dicke, a professor at Wageningen University which specialises in food and food production.

To mark the book launch in Wageningen, specialist insect chef Henk van Gurp will try to set a record for cooking the world's biggest grasshopper pie.

Research by scientists at the university showed that insects could provide the best source of protein to meet the needs of a rising population. Currently, 70 per cent of agricultural land is used for livestock production.

Better Homes and Wild Animal Attacks

In the 1950s and 60s, men's adventure magazines and Better Homes and Gardens represented somewhat different priorities. What would it be like if you could live both visions at the same time? Nadine Boughton created a series of collages that brought a touch of excitement to the tedium of suburban life.

Context-Free Patent Art

The blogger behind Context-Free Patent Art culls video game patents for curious illustrations. Perhaps they make sense when presented in the context of written descriptions, but we don't have that luxury.

I'm going to assume that the above illustration is of a new controller.

Paul Gauguin, Sans Pants, Playing a Harmonium

It was 1895, and in the studio of Alphonse Mucha. That's all the context that we have. We don't know why Post-Impressionist painter Paul Gauguin took off his pants. But we should not be surprised. William-Adolphe Bouguereau would live for another ten years, but the Academic traditions of realistic representation and wearing pants were already dead.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Gromit

This time, Michelangelo will take his pizza with Wensleydale, thank you very much. Andy Hunter imagined a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie not ravaged by Michael Bay, but rescued by Nick Park of Wallace and Gromit.

Star Wars, As Recreated by My Little Pony

(Video Link)

As we already know, Star Wars is heavily derivative of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic (or the reverse, I forget which). Animator Jacob Kitts brings us the original trilogy as it was meant to be.

Best of all, he presents the correct Han/Greedo shooting order.

12 Fighter Planes, Buried Underground in 1945, May Soon Be Recovered

During her finest hour, the United Kingdom's Supermarine Spitfire fighters saved her from doom. Sadly, only thirty-five survive in flying condition. That number may increase, thanks to the discovery of twelve that were buried underground in packing crates in Burma in 1945.

After hearing veterans mention burying them, David Cundall spent fifteen years searching for the Spitfires. He's now located them. The great news is that it may be possible to dig them up and restore them:

Mr Cundall said: “We sent a borehole down and used a camera to look at the crates. They seemed to be in good condition.”

And why were they buried in the first place?

“In 1945, Spitfires were ten a penny. Jets were coming into service. Spitfires were struck off charge, unwanted. Lots of Spitfires were just pushed off the back of aircraft carriers into the sea.

“On land, you couldn’t leave them for the locals – they might have ended up being used against you. It was a typical British solution: 'Let’s bury them lads.’ They might have planned to come back and dig them up again. They never did.”
