The Algorithm for the Perfect Bra

Aarthi Ramamurthy and Michelle Lam left Microsoft to start their own company -- one that would use computers to generate the perfect bra for every woman. They started by getting rid of the measuring tape:

“We went to bra fitting after bra fitting and spoke to experts, and the best ones didn’t use measuring tape,” Lam

said. “They had these unwritten rules where they could look at a woman’s body and say, we think this would be best. We were able to take these rules and distill them into code.” [...]

The algorithm then produces a page of custom recommendations and allows shoppers to choose three bras to test, while the True & Co. experts choose two “mystery” bras based on the customer’s answers to the quiz.

These five bras are shipped for free so women can try them on at home and decide what works. Everything on the site is priced at $45, including high-end brands like Calvin Klein and Natori.

Insane Athletes Working Out off the Side of a Crane

(Video Link)

Nothing provides motivation to finish that last pull-up quite like hanging off the end of a construction crane far above the ground. Watch these Russian daredevils tempt fate, strength and strong winds as they get a terrifying but probably effective workout.

Master Chief

I've never played Halo, so I'll just assume that this cosplayer is being completely faithful to the series. David Ngo spotted him at the Fanime 2012 convention.

Gamers in Love

Redditor MountCleverest writes, "My girlfriend and I wanted to cuddle, but we wanted to play Diablo too. This is what happened." It's a brilliant solution to a difficult problem, provided that you can come up with the girlfriend component.

Smart Car (of a Sort)

In Morristown, Tennessee, a man named Possum (presumably his birth name) gets around town on a John Deere riding lawn mower. Notice that he hangs a disabled parking permit tag when parking in the general vicinity of a disabled parking space. That's good because that'll keep him from getting a ticket.

Cutting Grass with a Rifle

After sending several hundred .22 LR rounds downrange at a steel popper target, Jay Grazio found that he had cut a nice edge through the lawn. It's a slow way to do your mowing, but it gets the job done with precision. Well, assuming that you're a good shot.

Star Wars Cupcakes with Edible LEGO Minifigs

Strictly speaking, LEGO minifigs are already edible -- just not digestible. Cake Central member Andytibaby solved that problem by making her minifigs out of what appears to be fondant.

Play-a-Grill Lets You Hear Music through Your Teeth

Ever since Zeon took a hammer to my boombox, I haven't been able to rock out to my favorite New Kids on the Block tunes at work. Aisen Caro Chacin's invention may prove to be an acceptable alternative. Her tongue-controlled MP3 player uses the palate to carry sound to the ears:

She embedded a vibrating motor connected to the headphone jack of an MP3 player inside a mould of her mouth, with the player's controls facing downwards so they could be manipulated with the tongue. The vibration of the motor was strong enough for her to hear the music through her skull, though controlling the MP3 player with her tongue proved more difficult. If the music is loud enough, the palate acts as a resonator and others nearby can hear sound coming from the wearer's mouth.

Donut Sandwiches Served in Mr. Potato Head Style

The Dough Truck combines the best of four usually separate worlds: food trucks, donuts, sandwiches and Mr. Potato Head accessories. This enchanted creature journeys through the land of Santa Clara, California, bringing joy everywhere it goes. Why? Because donuts. That's why.

Jim Henson's Weird Short Film "Time Piece"

(Video Link)

This 1966 short film written by, directed by and starring Jim Henson clinched an Academy Award nomination. What does it mean? Henson's company says that the film addresses "the effect of time keeping on us all." I think that the center of the film is the gorilla. The gorilla is the prime mover of the universe. He rules all of the other characters, though they do not know it.

Giant Claw Rips Oil Rigs, Krakens out of the Sea

I want one. I'm not sure what I'll do with it, but step 1 is to get this heavy lift ship, the VB 10,000 -- also known as "the Claw." The ship is capable of lifting 7,500 ton oil rigs off the seafloor. Here's how it works:

Each gantry measures 240-feet tall and weighs 3,400 tons—or about as much as the Ben Franklin Bridge in Pennsylvania. The barges both measure 300 feet by 72 feet and each is powered by a quartet of 1,000HP thrusters which also allow it to remain stationary over the job site. And to prevent the motion of the ocean from affecting the the lift, the VB 10,000 utilizes a set of articulated pins to connect the gantries to the barges. To perform the actual lift, four 2000-ton lifting blocks are attached to the oil rig deck by divers, who also cut off the rig's legs, and are then pulled to the surface by the vessel's quad 400-ton winches and deposited on the back of a waiting barge for transport back to port.

Céline Dion's "The Power of Bacon"

(Video Link)

Wow. This is the most romantic song that I've ever heard. Stevie Haimes and Anna Sudac have absolutely topped Céline Dion's original "The Power of Love." I only wish that I had had this video available before last Valentine's Day.

Tiny Houses on Tiny Islands

Tired of those pesky neighbors? Here's the solution! The aptly-named Just Room Enough Island in Canada's Saint Lawrence River has just enough room for a single small house. When the water is low, the owners can put their lawn furniture out on the porch and get some sun. It's one of several similar houses featured on the Tiny House Blog.

Socrates Narrowly Acquitted at Retrial 2,400 Years after His Execution

The Greek philosopher Socrates was accused of irreverence to the gods and corrupting the young people of Athens. For this, he was tried, convicted and sentenced to death. Socrates drank a cup of hemlock and died.

This, it has seemed to some observers of history, was a bum rap. So a panel of legal experts in Athens retried him. Their votes tied 5 to 5, thus narrowly securing an acquittal:

"Socrates comes before us feigning humility, yet demonstrating arrogance," said Loretta Preska, a New York district judge who presided at Friday's trial and voted to convict him.

"He is a dangerous subversive."

Pleading earlier in Socrates' defence, prominent French lawyer Patrick Simon said: "An opinion is not a crime. Socrates was searching for the truth.

He added: "My client has one fault: he likes to poke fun and is fiercely ironic. By acquitting him, you will show how solid and reliable democracy is."

Versed in Socratic literature, the legal brains came from Britain, France, Germany, Greece, Switzerland and the United States.

"In order not to complicate this trial unnecessarily, penalty will not be decided," Preska said.

That was probably a prudent decision.

The fish show no interest, but that's probably because they're working through Diablo III right now. In a few weeks, they'll take advantage of the wonderful if static gameplay that Cedrick Bearss made available to them.
