Worm Shoots Its Appendage over Man’s Hand

This is a marine ribbon worm. It has a proboscis, which is a prehensile tentacle-like appendage that it uses to seize prey and draw it into its maw. In this case, that’s a human hand.

A cursory Google search suggests that there is little in the way of a marine ribbon worm recipes. This is disappointing. What should I do if I catch a dozen and can’t find a tested means of cooking them? This is obviously an animal idea for human consumption.

Watch Mark Hamill’s Original Screen Test for Star Wars

(Video Link)

Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford sit in the control room of the Millennium Falcon. Their destination, Alderaan, is nothing but radioactive debris. They’re not in costume nor on a proper set. They’re just sitting in chairs and convincingly performing a selection from an early draft of Episode IV. At the 4:01 mark, you can hear George Lucas voicing his approval. Obviously Hamill is the right man to save the galaxy and revive the Jedi Order.

The Strangest Libraries in the World

(Photo: BC Architects)

Improbable Libraries is a new book by Alex Johnson that shows photos of the oddest and most inventive library designs in the world today. They include camel-mounted bookmobiles and bubble-like reading pods. I especially like this library in Muyinga, Burundi. BC Architects designed it to use local materials and construction techniques. It features an enormous hammock made of sisal rope woven by a local master of that craft. Children access it from a loft. They lie on cushions and read as cooling air flows in from the outside.

Improbable Libraries sounds like a fun book! You can see more photos from it at the Huffington Post.

University Creates "Puppy Room" for Stressed-Out Students

(Unrelated photo by James Brooks)

For many college students around the world, it's time to take final exams for the end of semester or quarter. It can be an incredibly stressful time for students, so some schools offer special events that help relieve stress. The University of Central Lancashire in the UK thinks that playing with puppies can help.

That's why this Wednesday, the University has a designated Puppy Room. Research shows that playing with puppies can relieve stress, so the school invites students to visit and play for a bit. Students have to make appointments in advance in order to limit the number of interactions. Otherwise, the puppies themselves might get overwhelmed and stressed.

Hedgehog and Hamster Hang out at a Tiny Cafe

(Video Link)

The Cute Critter Cafe has lattes and free WiFi (provided that you purchase a drink--don't be that guy).

Humphrey J. Hedgehog and his friend Coco the hamster visited recently. They snacked on nuts and sipped coffee-like drinks. The Cute Critter Cafe is perfectly sized for them. A grande-sized frap is only the size of a thimble. The price, alas, isn't reduced to fit the volume. But you expected that.

Neil deGrasse Tyson's "Astounding Fact" in Comic Form

In 2012, celebrity physicist Neil deGrasse Tyson was asked in an interview what he regarded as the most astounding fact in the universe. He's an astrophysicist, so he necessarily thinks on a grand scale--one that intersects his discipline with that of philosophy. His answer resonates with many people as it connects the basic chemical and physical origins of the universe with the individual human experience.

Gavin Aung Than, the artist behind Zen Pencils, takes quotations of famous people and presents them in comic form. It took him a while to work out how he would express Tyson's astounding fact, but he found a way to show a visual expression of Tyson's expression. You can read it all here.

Star Trek Actor Explains Star Wars Day

(Video Link)

May the Fourth be with you.

What does that mean? Today, you will encounter many Star Wars fans expressing this sentiment to you. Why? To find out, you need to consult someone closely associated with the Star Trek science fiction franchise. UCB Comedy recruited Tim Russ, who played the Vulcan officer Tuvok on Star Trek: Voyager. Russ explains:

You see, May the Fourth celebrates a movie called The Star Wars. In The Star Wars, the Fourth is a powerful energy that binds the galaxy together. Using the Fourth, powerful magicians called Space Druids are able to do crazy things, like pick something up or tell people that they're wrong.

10 Australian Phrases Illustrated

Sir, I sincerely wish that chickens turn into huge emu birds and kick down the door of your bathroom while you are sitting on the toilet.

That’s what the phrase in the picture above means. It’s an Australian way of wishing someone bad luck. And if huge birds smashed their way into my bathroom whilst I was on the toilet, then I would indeed feel unlucky. So it fits.

The travel blog Hotel Club previously brought us 10 strange idioms from around the world. More recently, it worked with artist Jared Atkins to illustrate 10 Australian idioms that are perplexing to outsiders.

Inflatable Bar

WOW Sports produces what it calls the Aqua Table. It’s an inflatable bar with a big central cooler. You can put ice in and drain the cooler through a port. It would be ideal for a pool or lake party. Just add ice and drinks in the center.

There’s an anchor and anchor line. That could come in handy once if you’ve had a bit too much and get swept away down to the deep end of the pool.

Rugby Players Have Missing Teeth Replaced with Bottle Openers

To promote Salta Beer, the ad agency Ogilvy Argentina designed a tooth implant that functions as a bottle opener. It then had a dentist screw the implants into the jaws of three rugby players who had lost teeth in action.

They are totally effective. In fact, we should get bottle openers on both sides of our mouths so that we can open two bottles at the same time!

Study Finds Which NFL Fanbases Have the Worst Grammar

(Photo: Kevin Coles)

Grammarly, a grammar and spellchecking program, can search through text to find more than 400 different types of errors. Recently, to demonstrate the capabilities of Grammarly, the company that makes it examined 150 reader comments that were at least 50 words long in the discussion boards of each official NFL team website.  It then ranked which teams had the most philologically-challenged fans.

Fans of the Washington Redskins won the contest with approximately 16.5 mistakes for every 100 words. Go Redskins!

Las Vegas Is Not Actually Las Vegas

(Photo: Marco Verch)

Welcome to fabulous Las Vegas! But if you see this iconic sign as you're driving, you're not in Las Vegas. In fact, most of the famous landmarks and the big casinos aren't in Las Vegas at all.

They're in Paradise, which isn't even a town. It's an unincorporated area in Clark County. A quarter of a million people live there, but it has no municipal government.
