20-Sided Die Mace

At a certain point, you've argued with the game master enough. You'll know that time has come when he brings out the d20 mace crafted by redditor King_Diamond_666.

He etched the numbers into the steel with a process called saltwater etching. This is something I've never tried before, but I'm now thinking about. It applies a mild electrical charge while the desired area is exposed to saltwater.

The Furby Centipede Is an Adorable Nightmare

Instructables member Look_I_Make_A_Hat made this soul-consuming Furby and provides instructions on how to, if you dare, create your own to unleash upon the world. You and I are compelled to do so, for we crave to obey the centifurby.

Although the creature really reminded me more of a sandworm (Bless the Maker and His water) from Dune than a centipede. That thought got me Googling a bit, leading me to this wonderfully terrifying creature.

It appears that making Furbies monstrous is an entire genre of crafting.

Street Artist Re-Creates Wile E. Coyote's Cunning Trap

Street artist E. Lee doesn't just paint his works anywhere, but integrates them into the surrounding scenes. In this case, he made use of the pre-existing "please back in" sign in his painting in Chicago of Wile E. Coyote trying to trap the Road Runner.

It's not the first time that E. Lee has collaborated with Wile E. We've previously seen them try and fail to lure the Road Runner with a trap baited with free bird seed. That failed, as this one surely will, too. But Lee is loyal to his friend. He explains:

I love Wile E Coyote. And I’m sure most people trying to make a living in a creative field see a little of themselves in him. I think it’s important that we find humor in our plight of constantly having to create, optimistically making plans and then seeing those plans rarely work the way we’d hoped.

The Nightmare Before Star Wars

Cosplayers Operation MJ and Claudia Stelmach are especially fond of The Nightmare Before Christmas and play Jack Skellington and Sally in various incarnations. Recently, they attended the D23 Expo with Jack as Han Solo and Sally as Leia.

It's a look that totally works!

"Honey, This Isn't What It Looks Like!"

I was just getting something out of her fur, I swear! She doesn't mean a thing to me! I'd never cheat on you!.

Alas for poor kitty, she's unlikely to believe you, as she caught you red-pawed.

Why Do Sloths Move So Slowly?

A young man once asked Winston Churchill to what did he attribute his success in life. Churchill responded:

Conservation of energy. Never stand up when you can sit down. And never sit down when you can lie down.

Sloths take a similar approach. Unlike most mammals, they aren't endothermic--that is, their bodies produce little internal heat. This is just as well, as the tree leaves that they consume offer little caloric value. Camila Mazzoni of the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research in Germany explained to the BBC:

“The thermo-regulation that most mammals have to do requires a lot of energy,” says Mazzoni. “But because sloths don’t have it, it means they require a lot less energy.
“But this means they can only live in the tropics, and not high up in the mountains where the temperature gets quite low.

Boston Market Is Giving away a 1-Ton Tub of Macaroni and Cheese

The Boston Market restaurant chain plans to give away a family-size portion of macaroni and cheese to one lucky customer. That winner will get the mac & cheese in either individual serving containers or one giant tub. The New York Post quotes CEO Frances Allen:

“If he or she would like a single, 2,000-pound serving of our golden mac and cheese, we’ll deliver via a 1-ton freight. Or if he or she wants to savor their prize for years to come or even donate it all to charity, we’ll provide a special dinning card loaded with the appropriate funds. We mean it when we say we’re not clucking around when it comes to customer loyalty.”

Thank you, but I can probably manage that in one sitting.

Man's Truck Stolen While He Was Robbing a Store

We live in a fallen, broken society. You can't just go about your business without someone trying to steal from you.

In the case of this man from Kennewick, Washington, that business was burglary. He parked his truck and, uh, liberated some items from a shop. Being a trusting soul, he had left his keys on the seat.

When the burglar came back to make a getaway, he saw someone driving off with it. This video shows him chasing after the truck thief at the 1:21 mark.

So the victim did what any sensible thief would do: he called the police.

When police reviewed surveillance footage, they found that their caller had broken into the shop. They arrested him.

According to KEPR-TV News, they haven't found his truck. So the whole burglary job has been a total loss.

Danish City Puts Vikings on Its Crossing Signals

In a less civilized age, these signs might indicate when to go into a berserker rage. Now, they just tell pedestrians when to cross the street.

Aarhus, the second largest city in Denmark, is celebrating its long history and association with Norse warriors and explorers. It is replacing signal images for 17 crosswalks with the icon of Viking warriors carrying axes and shields.

This Artist Paints with Her Breasts

It began for Nadia Matievskaia, an artist from Belarus, when an art class assignment required her to paint with her breasts.

(That seems like a big deal, but I can't find any details about the incident.)

She enjoyed the experience and began using her breasts in addition to traditional brushes. This video shows how she does it (warning: nudity).

Matievskaia posts the results on her Instagram page (warning: artistic nudity). Considering the unwieldiness of her artistic implements, she's able to achieve a surprising level of detail and precision. I could certainly do no better.

Delicate, Delft-Style Ceramic Weapons

Delft, the Netherlands, has been famous for centuries for its beautiful blue glazed porcelain. Helena Hauss, an artist in Paris, was inspired by it to create these sculptures that look like weapons, which are both brutal and lovely.

Hauss explained to Design Boom that these weapons, which she titles "Hell Hath No Fury," are an exploration of femininity:

women have repeatedly been construed as the ‘weaker sex’ and are regularly being preyed on, or diminished in some way or another,‘ hauss comments, on the inspiration behind the project. ‘too often portrayed as fragile and delicate, this project is an expression of the contrasting subtleties that come with femininity, as well as an attempt at vindication from a feeling of constant vulnerability that’s been forced upon us. it’s about inner strength, fury and empowerment – as a way to say: contrary to what you might think; we’re not made of glass, porcelain or crystal, we’re not gonna break, we’re wearing full metal jackets, and we’re ready to fight back.’

Nancy Tuttle's Outlandish Driftwood Sculptures

Nancy Tuttle, an artist in Oregon, makes extraordinarily vivid sculptures from driftwood. She finds monsters, fairies, beasts, and mages deep within the grains of wood. Tuttle carves eye-popping faces that direct their sometimes unwelcome attention at the viewer.

Cafe Customers Massively Overreact to Non-Existent Best Customer Contest

It all began as a joke. Fraser Harvey, a regular customer at the Sensory Lab coffee shop in Melbourne, Australia taped a flier to the wall of his favorite cafe. It proclaimed him Customer of the Week.

Harvey then went about his business, which included drinking coffee. When he stopped by again, he saw this photo instead of his own. It was better than his, as it had a frame.

Harvey was angry.

He had been challenged.

He would not back down, as he was the true Customer of the Week. And thus began the Great Customer War of 2019, as neither would yield to the other. Both Harvey and his anonymous adversary repeatedly one-upped each other.

In their most recent engagement, Harvey's opponent got a tattoo affirming her position as Customer of the Week.

Read the whole extraordinary story at The Guardian, including feedback on the reactions of employees and customers:

Malatesta was able to shed more light: “Customers were weirding the [expletive deleted-ed.] out. Because she wheeled in that projector. She was there, you know, trying to get her face exactly where she wanted it. If only they’d filmed it. It’s like a Seinfeld episode.”

Yes, it really is like this. Cosmo Kramer would totally get into a competition like this.

Muggers Attack Female Boxing Champion, Get Repeatedly Punched in the Groin

"I just kept throwing my right hand to his balls."

Two muggers in Chicago experienced a major failure in the victim selection process when they attempted to take the phone of Claire Quinn, a female boxing champion. She's trained for the past four years and holds a Golden Gloves title. That experience came in handy, as she explained to Block Club Chicago:

Within minutes, a person that Quinn described as a man walked up to Quinn from behind, pulled her shoulder back and pushed her to the ground.
He punched her in the head, and yelled, “Gimme your phone, b—h!”
At that moment, Quinn switched into “fight” mode.
She held her phone close to her chest in her left hand. She knew the man’s head was too far away, so she readied her right hook and aimed for the next best target: his groin area.
“A man hits me, I’m firing back,” she said.

And Quinn did so until the testicularly aggrieved robbers fled.
