Elite Fashion: Asymmetrical Jeans

Do you want to wear skinny jeans or bell bottoms? Now you now longer have to choose. For a mere $462, you can own a pair of jeans that goes half and half. Fashion brand Ksenia Schnaider lets you keep one foot in the 70s and one in 10s.

A crazy theory of mine: the manufacturer accidentally made a batch of defective jeans and convinced a retailer that it intentionally made pants to look like this.

This Is a Short Story Vending Machine at an Airport

In the photo above, Twitter user Mike Glenn holds a 5-minute short story issued to him by the Free Library of Philadelphia's kiosk at the Philadelphia International Airport. That's how long a 5-minute story looks. There are options for other lengths of time, so you can customize your reading to your individual time-killing needs.

You can find this unique vending machine in the quiet room at the airport. The Philly Voice reported on its installation last year:

The dispensers are the creation of Short Édition, a French community publisher that accepts user-generated stories and places them in reading length categories of one, three and five minutes. A five-foot tall, screenless kiosk invites travelers to select a reading length and then prints out the story on eco-friendly paper.

Siobhan Reardon, the director of the Free Library of Philadelphia (a public library system), described the impact she hoped this outreach program will have:

“Our goals are to create excitement about reading in unexpected places throughout the city and to increase public awareness of the Free Library’s programs and services,” said Reardon. “Having a kiosk at Philadelphia International Airport in the Library space there continues our outreach to people who may not be Free Library regulars, but who would enjoy a quick, accessible read."

The Beautifully Spectral Sculptures of Debra Bernier

Working in shells, driftwood, geodes, and other media, Debra Bernier finds within her source material images reminiscent of fairies, druids, mothers, and mysteries of nature. She reverently journeys into the depths of those materials to reveal what is unseen to us, as she explains to My Modern Met:

“Sometimes these natural sculptures were just created, like a spider’s web or the colors on a leaf. Other times, it took millions of years to form something I can hold in my hand, like a stone or a fossil.” She has gratitude for these amazing formulations and continues their legacy with her own additions. “There is a sacred connection between us and the natural world that is unseen. I try to make this unity visible through my art.”

82-Year Old Grandma Beats up Robber with Her Cane

June Turner, 82, was working at a newsstand in Hanley, Staffordshire, UK when a man entered her store and demanded money. He took cash and cigarettes and tried to make off with the whole cash register when Ms. Turner decided she had had enough of his misbehavior. The Sun reports:

The robbery was caught on CCTV at AJ and J Newsagents in Hanley, Staffs. June, who has worked there for 45 years, said: “He came up to the counter and said, ‘I want your money’ but I said, ‘You’re not having my money’. He came round the back of the counter and got some money from the till.
“I couldn’t find the panic button so I got my stick and I really belted him with it.
“It was just instinct to try to stop him and give him a good whack.

The robber fled, but not before knocking Ms. Turner to the ground. If he returns, she'll be ready:

She said: “If it happened again I’d react the same but with something heavier.”

Taking a Break from Screens

Does your head hurt from looking at a screen all day? Try relaxing by looking at something else on the same screen, as Maximumble advises. It works every time!

If this is the life you lead, then I suggest reading Neatorama on your breaks. Science* informs us that reading Neatorama enhances your mental acuity, creativity, muscular definition, and physical attractiveness. After a few hours of working at your computer, pull up Neatorama and open every post for maximum effectiveness.

*If we define "science" generously.

Police Called to Ikea to Stop Massive Game of Hide and Seek

Perhaps as many as 3,000 people were planning to descend upon this Ikea in Glasgow, Scotland in order to play hide and seek together. When store management learned of this plan, they summoned the police to quash the fun. The Scotsman reports:

At some point on Saturday, staff at Braehead became aware of a Facebook thread suggesting some 3,000 youths were about to descend on the store.
As well as drafting in extra security, Ikea contacted Police Scotland, who dispatched five officers.
Police remained at the store until it closed at 8pm.

The Bunny Girls of Dragon Con

Every year, Dragon Con highlights the work of cosplayers who find new and ingenious ways of mixing up the classic bunny girl costume. Jen of Epbot attended this Bunny Hutch party and photographed many of the elegant and funny cosplayers.

At least eleven herbs and fabrics went into this Colonel Sanders. You can see others at Epbot, including bunnified versions of Mrs. Doubtfire, Edward Scissorhands, the Demogorgon, and Beetlejuice.

I Made Borschtsicles

One of my signature dishes is borscht. I generally cook a big pot of the stuff and freeze quart-sized volumes for easy family dinners.

That got me thinking: could I freeze this delicious dish in a popsicle mold?

This the result of my brilliance: the borstsicle. It's a frozen portion of borscht serve with a dollop of sour cream.

So here's my business idea: I could buy an old ice cream truck and drive around the neighborhood blasting Russian folk music from the speakers. Kids will come running out to buy my borschtsicles at, say, $5 each.

I'll make a fortune!

For the First Time in 360 Years, Compasses in Greenwich Will Point to True North

The Royal Observatory in Greenwich, UK is the location where the prime meridian (0° longitude) was established in the Nineteenth Century, thus providing for a baseline of geographic standardization. You can follow that line (or any other line of longitude) up to the North Pole.

But the North Pole is usually not magnetic north, which is where compasses will point. Magnetic north does, however, move. And, and the moment, it allows compasses in Greenwich to point to both true north and magnetic north. The British Geological Society reports:

The angle a compass needle makes between true north and magnetic north is called declination. As the magnetic field changes all the time, so does declination at any given location. For the past few hundred years in the UK, declination has been negative, meaning that all compass needles have pointed west of true north.
The line of zero declination, called the agonic, is moving westward at a present rate of around 20 km per year. By September 2019, for the first time since around 1660, the compass needle will point directly to true north at Greenwich, London, before slowly turning eastwards.

A Blind Man Invented a "Smart Cane" to Navigate the World

Kursat Ceylan, a Turkish engineer, has been blind since birth. He applied his technical expertise to help himself and other people like him overcome that disability. The "WeWalk" is a cane that comes with a built-in sensor to detect obstacles. It can also be paired with a smartphone to provide digital navigation assistance. CNN reports:

The WeWalk stick has an ultrasonic sensor that detects obstacles above chest level and uses vibrations to warn the user. It can be paired with a smartphone to help navigation, and is integrated with a voice assistant and Google Maps. [...]
Ceylan, who has been blind since birth, says that connecting the stick to the Internet of Things and smart city solutions makes it user-friendly.
"As a blind person, when I am at the Metro station I don't know which is my exit ... I don't know which bus is approaching ... [or] which stores are around me. That kind of information can be provided with the WeWalk," he says.

Comfy Chairs

Well, actually, the design is titled "Cadre." French designer Stephanie Ducatteau. They're made of welded steel and are ideal for people with pyramidal posteriors. And at $4,475 each, they're a great deal!

These chairs were featured on Rain Noe's Weekly Design Roast feature at Core 77. In it, Noe hilariously mocks designers who have clearly not thought through the logical implications of their ideas.

Frustrated Airline Passenger Flies Jet to Destination when the Pilot Doesn't Show up

Michael Bradley was trying to get from Manchester to his vacation destination of Alicante, Spain. Alas, the pilot assigned to the flight was a no-show. So Bradley volunteered to fly the easyJet flight himself. This was something the airline would accept because Bradley is also a pilot for easyJet. The New York Post reports:

He said he was legally permitted to fly because he had the previous four days off and brought his license with him.
“I phoned up easyJet and said, ‘Hiya, I’m standing in the terminal doing nothing. I have got my license with me,'” Bradley told the outlet. “Thirty-eight seconds later they phoned me back and said, ‘Please, please, pretty please with a big cherry on top, can you fly the airplane to Alicante?'”
