LEGO Recreation of Dungeons & Dragons

The 1977 Basic Set for Dungeons & Dragons featured the cover image that you see below. It’s a painting by David Sutherland that shows a group of adventurers combating an underground dragon sitting on his treasure. It’s an iconic work of D&D art.

LEGO artist Eric Harshbarger, whose work we’ve featured previously, owns a copy of that old edition and occasionally runs campaigns with it. He loves the cover image and decided to make an enormous LEGO mosaic of it. It’s 75 inches wide and 90 inches tall and uses over 50,000 LEGO pieces. The project took him 2 months to complete.

5-Year Old Isn’t Running away from Home—Just “Moving On” with Her Life

(Video Link)

Saige, a 5-year old girl, doesn’t want you to think of it as a breakup as much as the next stage of the relationship. You’ve both changed, so it’s time to explore other possibilities.

Her big brother Tanner doesn’t want her in the house anymore. So Saige is moving to the home of Jenn, her mom’s best friend. It’s much cleaner and has more room for her stuff.

Fortunately, Saige has backed down from her threat. Now a few days after this video was recorded, she remains in her mom’s house.

How to Make Spider Sliders

Celebrate magazine shows you how to make spooky burgers that it calls Spider Sliders. The recipe calls for the conventional components of cheeseburgers as well as fries. Going beyond that, I would suggest adding an actual spider or two for authenticity.

This Coffee Table Is a Working R2-D2 Pinball Machine

Excuse me, sir, but this coffee table is in prime condition. Inside its molded body that looks like the colors and lines of the original R2-D2 are the guts of a Star Wars pinball machine from 1991. It has external lights and sound effects from our favorite droid, as well as a light that resembles Artoo's holographic projector.

It's made by ALTAR Furniture, a company that gives new life to old pinball machines by placing them inside stylish coffee tables. It's on sale for about $13,000.

The Golfboard is a Combination Skateboard and Golf Cart

(Photo:Golfboard)

The goal of this invention is to make a round of golf faster. Instead of 5 hours on the course, according to the manufacturers, the Golfboard reduces a round to under 4 hours. It’s a 4-wheel drive vehicle that moves up to 10 MPH. It has room for a set of clubs and one rider, who steers it by leaning. The deck is similar to that of a skateboard, so riding it is akin to riding a motorized skateboard. The 11-inch wheels are designed to provide traction without tearing up greens.

Couple Gets Married, Immediately Runs Marathon

(Photo: On3 Wedding Photography)

Veronica and Sage had a long wedding. Specifically, it was about 26.2 miles long. They took their vows immediately before the Whistle Stop Marathon in Ashland, Wisconsin. Then they ran the full race, with Veronica in her veil and gown and Sage in his formal vest.

(Photo: On3Wedding Photography)

When they reached the end, Sage performed the tradition of carrying the bride over the threshold by toting Veronica across the finish line. You can see more photos at Offbeat Bride.

Don’t Meep. Meep and You’re Dead!

It’s a Meeping Angel from Doctor Who! Don’t blink. Don’t even blink. Blink and you’re dead.

Krypton Radio has a Beaker action figure that only the Doctor (specifically, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew) can defeat. Don’t underestimate him. Beaker moves incredibly fast when he wants to.

What a Master of the Castanets Can Do

(Video Link)

Mechanically speaking, castanets are simple instruments: just pairs of joined shells. You can slap them together. But Lucero Tena can do a lot more than that. She’s considered to be one of the finest castanet players in the world.

Here she performs La Boda de Luis Alonso at the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid. Tena joins the orchestra at 1:10 mark. It is a full body performance. The music seems to capture Tena as she moves far more than just her hands to play these small instruments.

Photos of Mark Hamill’s Family Visiting the Set of Return of the Jedi

Mark Hamill, the actor who played Luke Skywalker, brought his family to the set of Return of the Jedi in 1983. His wife and his son had a lot of fun with the props and costumes.  Hamill recently displayed the photos at the Star Wars Celebration convention in Anaheim.

Young Nathan Hamill found that R2-D2 offered a great hiding spot and that Yoda’s hut was just the right size for him. You can see more photos here.

90-Year Old Tortoise Now Moves Faster on Wheels

Mrs. T is a pet tortoise in Pembrokeshire, UK. She’s about 90 years old. During the past winter, she was hibernating in an outdoor shed. Rats chewed her front legs off. She had lost too much to use prosthetic feet. So her owner, Jude Ryder, and his son, an engineer, came up with this solution: wheels.

They’re from a toy airplane. The axle is fixed onto her shell with resin. Mrs. T quickly learned how to use the wheels. In fact, according to Ryder, Mrs. T can now move even faster than ever before!

Russia’s Emergency Steam Locomotive Reserve

(Unrelated photo: Евгений Сухарников)

To have in supply in case of a disaster, the US has a strategic reserve of petroleum. China has a similar repository of pork. Canada, of course, has a backup inventory of maple syrup.

To prepare for the worst, Russia has a reserve fleet of old fashioned steam-powered locomotives. This was originally a Soviet operation. In the event of a nuclear war, the USSR wanted to maintain a transportation infrastructure without a regular supply of diesel fuel. These trains could operate with coal. Russians call the program the Strategic Steam Resource.

12 of these trains still exist, albeit in poor condition, near the city of Roslavl. The Russian government will probably scrap them soon.

Cartoonist Explains What It’s Like to Have Anxiety

Sophie Wright, a cartoonist, has anxiety. If you don’t have it, it can be hard to explain the experience. But Sophie has more than words to offer. In a 9-part cartoon, she illustrates what it’s like to live this way and how people can respond helpfully. She starts out with her umbrella metaphor, which is really good. But she’s just warming up. Read the whole thing.
