Catching Up With Maru and Hanna

(Video Link)

It's been a while since we checked in with Maru and his younger sister Hanna. So what have these two cute kitties been up to? This video should sum up their recent exploits fairly well -essentially, the two have just been acting adorably, playing together and enjoying all kinds of fantastic boxes of all sizes.

Visiting the Alps? Stay in the Amazing UFOgel

The name UFOgel is a combination of the words "UFO" and "Vogel," which means "bird" in German. And this lovely rental home is a perfect combination of a space ship and a birdhouse. Best of all, the tiny minimalist home is situated right in the Austrian alps and the massive window in the living room provides for an amazing view.

The small house can sleep up to eight, though four would probably be more comfortable, and it is equipped with all the comforts of home including a wood burning stove, a kitchen, a spacious shower and a large living room.

You can learn more about the beautiful house and see more great pictures over at Homes and Hues, and if you love small, stylish homes, you'll also love the great Jenga House, the Japan House and the Little Concrete House on the Prairie.

The Happiest Furniture We've Ever Seen

People claim their furniture has personality, but without a face, how much personality can it really have? Fortunately, there is an alternative as Roberto Giacomucci's Neotoi Family series actually features adorable and expressive faces.

There are happy, surprised and even neutral faces on the furniture and some of them are even a bit animalistic like the Crocodilia one up at the top. The designer even points out that he wants his furniture to create a happy mood.

The whole line is a great compliment to the awesome rocking bench we talked about on Homes and Hues last week.

A Magnificent Look At Dogs Riding in Cars

Everyone knows that dogs love riding in cars, but it's rare to see the full extent of elation of their faces as clearly as you can see it in this new fantastic photo series by Lara Jo Regan. You might recognize that name because the great photographer is also the owner of the famous Mr. Winkle, who we mentioned in a few other articles before

Whether shooting her own little angel or the furry friends of others, Regan does a wonderful job capturing the happy spirit of dogs and their individual personalities and this new photo set is simply fantastic.

This Cool Forest Home Was Built for $11,000

Admittedly, with the whole exterior bathroom thing, I'd rather live somewhere else on a regular basis, but I sure wouldn't mind traveling to Oregon's Cape Falcon Kayak to stay in this stunning Japanese House. The house was created in only one year on a budget of $11,000 by Kayak instructor Brian Schulz.

Schulz design style was inspired by traditional Japanese architecture, but the building itself is almost exclusively made from locally sourced materials, many of which were salvaged.

The totally sustainable house provides a great way to get back to nature while still enjoying beautiful architecture and style.

Like homes that incorporate unique architecture, then head over to Homes and Hues to get a look at the Jenga House, the Little Concrete House on the Prairie or the Lawn Home of Austria.

The 10 Weirdest Japanese Flavors of Toothpaste

Why yes, that is a tube of toothpaste with an eggplant on it. And no, that's not weird, it would only be weird if it weren't eggplant flavored. No, wait, still weird. But oddly, that's nowhere close to the weirdest flavor of toothpaste available in Japan.

InventorSpot has a list of the top ten strange toothpaste flavors in Japan and they make our NeatoShop bacon and cupcake toothpastes seem downright traditional in comparison. My personal pick for the strangest flavor ever? Octopus balls -because as much as I love octopus, the last thing I want my mouth to smell like after I brush my teeth is a sea creature.

The Coolest Animal Stories From Last Year

I don't know about you guys, but I love animals and great stories about them. If you just can't get enough great animal stories, then you really shouldn't miss out on this list of the best animal stories from the last year. For example, scientists discovered a shark that uses its feet to walk around on the sand underwater this year. There was also the great story of slugs that have sex by penetrating each other in the head. You can find links to all the stories over on Scientific America.

Oddly though, the yellow-footed rock wallaby above, which I pulled from the original source, isn't mentioned in the article though.

Whiskey Sriracha Caramel Corn

Spicy, sweet and savory, this amazing caramel corn by Olives for Dinner combines some of our favorite flavors -booze, sugary goodness and Sriracha. Well, almost all of our favorite flavors...it is missing Nutella and bacon, but you could always find a a way to work these in as well -or just recognize that maybe the existing recipe is perfect just the way it is. I guess you'll have to try if for yourself and find out.

Post-Punk and New Wave Rockers As Superheroes

"In my life, why do I save all the people that I'd much rather kick in the eye?" -Super Morrissey.

"It's a nice day for a butt kicking" -Aqua Billy.

Yes, these are a few of the many great catchphrases we could hope to hear if artist Billy Butcher's fantastic music/superhero mashup art in his new series Post-Punk/New Wave Super Friends.

Don't forget to visit his page to see if your favorite artist of the era is included in the delightful madness.

10 Creepy and Seriously Cool Abandoned Mansions

This 1890's mansion was once a stunning sight to behold, but after it was abandoned in 1930, General Electric took over and encouraged salvagers to take anything they wanted from the home as they were planning to demolish it anyway. When WWII broke out though, the company dropped their plans for the property and just left it to rot.

And that's just one amazing mansion that you won't believe people just allowed to crumble away over the decades. Read about the rest over on Oddee.

10 Species Discovered in 2013

We already talked about 10 poor animals that went extinct over the last year, but while we gave up hope of ever seeing a few species, we also discoveredd some new ones as well. Mental Floss has a great list of ten such creatures and a few plants we only recently recognized scientifically, including the adorably tiny paedophryne amauensis, which as you can see from the picture above, is about a quarter of the size of a dime -no wonder we never noticed it before!
