The Most Deadly Path in England

(Image via Wikipedia)

Just off of the coast of Essex lies Foulness Island, which is home to the most deadly pathway in all of Britian. Known as the Broomway, the path travels several hundred yards off the coast stretching for three miles as it leads the walker through sand and mud flats that are washed clear by the sea twice a day every day.

At least 100 people have died on the Broomway, and those are only the recorded victims. Of those 100, only sixty six of the bodies were recovered and they have since been laid to rest in the small churchyard nearby.

Of course, the quickly rising tide is only one of the deadly threats to walkers on what Edwardian newspapers termed "The Doomway." While the path was marked by the locals who buried brooms in the mud long ago, hence the name "Broomway," in rain, mist or fog, the pathway can become dangerously disorienting with little to guide the walker along the path of shining sand. Even in good weather, a wrong step can leave you stuck in deep mud or quicksand.

Of course, the path wasn't built just to be a deadly, scenic attraction. Until 1932, it was the only way to reach the Foulness Island from the mainland without a boat.

You can read more about the Broomway and a detailed account of walking the treacherous path in this BBC article.

People Are Knitting Sweaters to Help Rescued Elephants

Elephants may be jumbo-sized, but they're still quite emotionally sensitive. So the elephants rescued from abuse who live at the Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation and Care Center rely on the compassion and love of their caretakers.

Unfortuantely, as much as the voluteers at the center love their charges, they can't hug their whole bodies all day long to keep them warm during a surprising cold spell in India. So instead, the volunteers are working to knit the elephants jumbo-sized sweaters to keep them cozy and warm during the freezing winter weather.

Each sweater takes about four weeks to make, but that's a small price to pay when it means keeping rescued elephants happy and healthy.

Why The Three Laws of Robotics Have to be Arranged the Way They Are

Isaac Asimov's three rules of robotics are at the core of all of his robot stories and fans of not only his works, but countless other authors who have touched on a future filled with robots are familiar with the results. But simply re-arranging the order of the stories makes for an entirely different set of scenarios -most of which are terrible. XKCD explores these other outcomes in this simple-but-effective comic.

This Bad-Haired Moth With a Weird Penis Was Just Named After Donald Trump

Just in time for the inauguration, scientists have named the first ever animal after Donald Trump. A few species were named after Obama during his term and now it's Trump's turn. Of course, there is always a reason behind naming a new species after someone and in this case, it's the moth's strange, scaly forehead that bears resemblance to its namesake's yellow helmet of hair. The moth also has a strangely curved penis, but there's no word on if that went into the naming decision or not.

Those who wish to see the N. donaldtrumpi in person will have to visit California or Baja Mexico, where they are presumably scoping out land to build a great wall.

We're Not Worthy of This Giant Grilled Cheese Sandwich

The problem with grilled cheese is that it limits you to the size of the bread and sure there are some relatively large sour doughs out there, but a classic grilled cheese is all about the white bread. Of course, if you make your own bread then the size is the limit.

The geniuses over at HellthyJunkFood did precisely that and the finished project, which took 20 slices of cheese to finish, is a true 3,650 calorie, comfort food masterpiece.

You can find the recipe here.

Explaining Movies to a Five Year Old

How would you explain your favorite grown up film to a five year old? That's exactly the premise of a recent Twitter hashtag and the results are hilarious. From Inception to The Breakfast Club, the simplified, chilld-friendly descriptions are brilliant:

The best ones even seem to be the most extreme ones:

In some cases, the best part is seeing if you can recognize the movie in question:

Now it's your turn readers. Enter yours in the comments.

Chicken and Waffle Donut Holes

Chicken and waffles are the marriage of two perfect foods, but eating the two together in one big bite requires the use of those pesky old utensils. Now Oh Bite It has come up with a fantastic and dippable one-handed version that combines chicken and waffles with good old fashioned fried donut holes. Essentially they are simply waffle batter stuffed with chicken pieces and deep fried, but the combination of these meant-to-be foods is just too perfect to be ignored. Whether you dip them in hot sauce or syrup is up to you.

Get the recipe here.

A Chillingly Awesome Serving Suggestion

You don't really need a spoon for a shot glass in most cases, but when the spoon and shot glass compliment each other as well as this crawling hand glass and bone spoon do, practicality certainly gives way to aesthetics.

The creations, by artist CTCordingly, come in a multitude of colors and are 3D printed in porcelain. They're perfect for any creepy party, especially a creepy dinner party with a tasting menu that includes a soup course (since it's the perfect excuse for a tiny amount of liquid that still requires a spoon).

So check out the glasses and spoons here.

Looking for a labyrinth that smells as great as it looks? The you'll want to head to West Michigan, where Cherry Point Farm and Market, a farm in Shelby, offers a massively relaxing maze built with lovely and aromatic lavender plants. David Bowie's Jareth Costume Who Wore It Better: The Cat or the Dog?

Jareth the Goblin King from The Labyrinth is David Bowie's most memorable movie role. A year after his death, it seems only appropriate to see animals doing their best to celebrate his legendary role. But cats and dogs are always in competition, so now it's time to ask, who wore it better -kitty or doggy Jareth? Somehow cats just seem like a better David Bowie match...

but this dog's costume is just amazing. Plus, we've previously seen a dog naved David Bowie, but never one who wanted to be David Bowie.

Every Girl Who Grew Up in the 80s and 90s Needs These Lisa Frank Whoopie Pies

This Cat's Post-Rescue Transformation is Amazing

Sinbad the cat is a Persian kitty that belonged to an elderly man in Chicago. Unfortunately, as her owner got older, his mental health declined and the kitty's thick, long hair started matting as he neglected to brush her. When a city worker came to do some repairs and maintenance on the man's home, he noticed the cat's poor condition and called the The Anti-Cruelty Society, who sent an investigation team to check on the kitty. When the team arrived, they asked the man if he would be willing to give up Sinbad and he agreed.

At the shelter, vets bathed the cat and gave him two rounds of hair cuts -shedding over five pounds of hair from the cat. After he started to look better, shelter employee Elliot Serrano took Sinbad home over the holidays and ended up falling in love with the recovered and loving kitty. Serrano has since adopted Sinbad and the recovering cat is happy to live in a happy home.

You can keep up with Sinbad's exploits on his Facebook and Instagram.

These Donuts Are Inspired By Gourmet Diner Entrees

We've heard of donuts with bacon, but taking an ordinary restaurant meal and turning it into a donut is a whole new level of dessert. That's exactly what New York donut shop The Doughnut Project (previously featured on Neatorama for its bone marrow donut) is doing with the favorite restaurant dishes of its founders, Troy Neal and Leslie Polizzotto.

Their new creations include one with grilled Nueske's bacon on a peanut butter glaze with a jalapeño jelly filling, based on this dish from Chef Ryan Bartlow's Quality Eats (top); a kabocha squash filled doughnut with a grilled green grape glaze with a fried caper topping inspired by this dish at Chef Michael Anthony's Gramercy Tavern (above); and a pasta-like donut with tomato jam filling, olive oil glaze and pecorino cheese with a guanciale topping that is a nod to the Bucatini All'Amatriciana at Chef Robert Zwirz's Lupa (below).

Lupa's co-owner, Mario Batali, was so touched by the tribute that he plans on offering a mini version of the donut on the restaurant's dessert menu.
