The producers didn't add Russell and Wells' names to the credits "because they were popular", they did it because Denver used his contractual clout to force them to. He didn't even tell anyone at the time he'd done so; Wells has said she didn't find out until years later.

And re: Gilligan's name. It was never given in-series, but Denver was quoted as saying it would have been Willie if it had ever come up.

And they were originally a series of books, the comics came later. Well worth reading.
