I was computer simulating some fur as a rendering experiment - and identified it as virtual - and I got a few negative comments when I posted it online.
I see a lot of value in top-down organization where a framework is put in place and the details are fleshed out later. That's a good way to paint, write a screenplay, or build a house. I also see a lot of value in seeing high-level organizational behavior arise as an emergent property through the self-motivated interactions of many small systems. Some things are too chaotic and full of unintended consequences to centrally plan. But I have to wonder about any philosopher or economist who says one way is always good and the other always bad.
