I'm pretty sure he used various colors of tapes. Such as how duct tape can come in black, blue, and gray. Packing tape (that funny smelling one) tend to come in various shades of brown...which is why this picture has a ton of brown shades of various dark and light forms.

I used to take my all the nails and tool bits from my dad's toolbox and would build a city. Nice to see someone else had the time to do it as art! :)
