Dog Used Trampoline to Escape from Backyard

Alex

Harvey, a 3-year-old bull terrier, couldn't get over the fence on his own, so the clever dog used the family's trampoline and bounced his way to freedom!

"The fence isn't all that high, but he couldn't have climbed over it on his own and must have used the trampoline to bounce himself into my neighbours garden and got out," she said.

"He liked to bounce on the trampoline with my daughter Chloe, but he rarely went on it on his own. He liked to sit on it and sunbathe.

"I was just putting the shopping away and Harvey was in the garden. One minute he was there, the next he had gone." (Source)

But the story has a happy ending (well, depending on your perspective, I suppose - the dog may have a different idea): a few days later, Harvey and his owners were reunited.

Is Shopdropping (Reverse Shoplifting) A Crime?

Alex

Okay, we all know that shoplifting is a crime - but what about the reverse: shopdropping (or droplifting) where you go into stores and actually put things onto the shelves. Is that a crime?

Here's a neat article on WebUrbanist about the strange (performance art?) act of reverse shoplifting:

Shopdroppers have their own reasons for doing what they do. Some are social and political culture jammers who want to raising awareness about consumerism or adding warnings to dangerous products. Others seek to promote their own product, such as an album left in a record store. Still others do it for their own amusement and artistic fulfillment without expectations of any kind of return. [...]

Shopdroppers who are caught are variously freed by confused police or held on charges related to destruction of property or even fraud.

Japanese Market for Elder Porn is HUGE!

Alex

Meet Shigeo Tokuda, a robust 74-year-old man and rising (erhm) star of a strange yet growing niche of Japanese adult movie industry: elder porn!

Michiko Toyama wrote this fascinating article for TIME Magazine:

Besides his glowing complexion, Shigeo Tokuda looks like any other 74-year-old man in Japan. Despite suffering a heart attack three years
ago, the lifelong salaryman now feels healthier, and lives happily with his wife and a daughter in downtown Tokyo. He is, of course, more physically active than most retirees, but that's because he's kept his part-time job — as a porn star. [...]

Tokuda is rare among Japanese porn stars in that his name has become a brand. The Shigeo Tokuda series he's just completed portray him as a tactful elderly gentleman who instructs women of different ages in the erotic arts, and he boasts a body of work far more impressive than most actors in their prime.

Movie Mashups by Paul Proulx

Alex

A while ago, David posted about a neat YouTube clip of mashups of Coen brothers movies - it's amazing how well they sort of fuse with each other! - that left me wanting more (and strangely ... wanting waffles. Must have waffles forthwith).

Anyhoo, I just ran across a post on David's blog Always Watching on his interview with the maker, Paul Proulx of Sly-Fi, with many more fantastic mashed up clips of movies of Stanley Kubrick, Tim Burton, Quentin Tarantino, Wes Anderson, Martin Scorsese and so on.

Check it out, it's excellent: http://www.alwayswatching.org/features/amazing-movie-montages-paul-proulx

Japan to Market Robotic Girlfriend to Lonely Men

Alex

Lonely men, listen up: Japan (who else?) has come to your rescue by introducing EMA (Eternal Maiden Actualisation) robot that can be your girlfriend:

A Japanese firm has produced a 15-inch tall robotic girlfriend that kisses on command, to go on sale in September for around $175, with a target market of lonely adult men.

Using her infrared sensors and battery power, the diminutive damsel named "EMA" puckers up for nearby human heads, entering what designers call its "love mode."

Star Wars Dance Off
It's like Dancing with the Stars, where "Stars" mean characters from Star Wars and "dancing" means geeks flailing their arms about in a physical approximation of dancing.

It's strange, but fascinating ... Link (includes the obligatory Thriller dance ... with Darth Vader and the Stormtroopers)

Patrick Stewart "Secrets"
Why do people give him a dirty look when he's out with Rod Stewart? And why is his favorite animal the bald eagle?

Here's Patrick Stewart spilling his "secrets" on Conan O'Brien in this funny comedy skit: Link

How Not to Shoot a Gun
From the first segment: "I'm the only one in this room professional enough, that I know of, to carry this Glock 40," said the Federal Agent lecturing kids on gun safety, right before he shot himself in the leg! (What? Don't believe me? Here's the story.)

Some people just shouldn't handle firearms, and this is why: Link

One of the strangest things that ever happened in baseball occurred in 1998 when the Chicago White Sox were playing the Houston Astros - check out this play where the ball - literally - "disappeared" from the game: Link

Thief Ran to Police Station to Remove Handcuffs After Being Arrested

Alex

Bad idea: Burgling a supermarket
Really bad idea: Getting caught ... then escaping while still handcuffed
Neatorama-worthy: Running to a police station to get the cuffs removed!

A security guard cuffed the man to a railing after thwarting a late night supermarket break-in. By the time officers came and arrested his accomplices, he had somehow escaped, police said.

Shortly afterwards, the 19-year-old reappeared at the nearby police station, where he told officers he had been locked up by a friend as a joke, and asked for help removing the cuffs.

The officers at first went along with the ruse, "also laughing at the man's apparent misfortune," police said. But having already heard about the missing man at the break-in, they then dropped their light-hearted facade and demanded the truth.

California's Same Sex Marriage: A Word from George Takei

Alex

After the state's Supreme Court decision to legalize same sex marriage on May 15 took effect Monday evening (when most county clerk's offices were closed) - so today, the rush is on.

One of the first gay couples that got married a marriage license are Star Trek actor George Takei and longtime partner Brad Altman. Takei, who played Sulu in the Star Trek: The Original Series, wrote:

Our California dream is reality. Brad Altman and I can now marry. We are overjoyed! At long last, the barrier to full marriage rights for same-sex couples has been torn down. We are equal with all citizens of our state!

The California Supreme Court has ruled that all Californians have a fundamental right to marry the person he or she loves. Brad and I have shared our lives together for over 21 years. We've worked in partnership; he manages the business side of my career and I do the performing. We've traveled the world together from Europe to Asia to Australia. We've shared the good times as well as struggled through the bad. He helped me care for my ailing mother who lived with us for the last years of her life. He is my love and I can't imagine life without him. Now, we can have the dignity, as well as all the responsibilities, of marriage. We embrace it all heartily.

The California Supreme Court further ruled that our Constitution provides for equal protection for all and that it cannot have marriage for one group and another form - domestic partnership - for another group. No more "separate but equal." No more second-class citizenship. Brad and I are going to be married as full citizens of our state.

Read more of what George wrote in his official website: http://www.georgetakei.com/news.asp

I know this subject is controversial, and I do respect your opinions, whether you agree with the ruling or not - but please keep the discussion civil.

Road Rage Linked to Bumper Stickers

Alex

Psychologists William Szlemko and his colleagues at Colorado State University in Fort Collins have made a link between road rage and ... bumper stickers!

People who had a larger number of personalized items on or in their car were 16% more likely to engage in road rage, the researchers report in the journal Applied Social Psychology.

“The number of territory markers predicted road rage better than vehicle value, condition or any of the things that we normally associate with aggressive driving,” say Szlemko. What's more, only the number of bumper stickers, and not their content, predicted road rage — so "Jesus saves" may be just as worrying to fellow drivers as "Don't mess with Texas".

Wall-E, the LEGO Version

Alex

Joe Meno, editor of the BrickJournal magazine, created this cute LEGO version of Wall-E, the hero of the newest computer animated sci-fi movie by Pixar/Disney.

Here's what Joe wrote about his LEGO Wall-E:

Wall-E uses 2 Power functions IR controllers, so he can move and move his neck up and down. Also, his arms are on ball joints, so while not motorized, they can be posed. A mount is on the side for the arms to rest, but can be replaced with grill plates to be more accurate.
