John Lennon's Imagine, Made into a Comic by Pablo Stanley

Alex

We've written about Pablo Stanley of Stanley Colors blog before on Neatorama, but the man is on a roll! Great job, Pablo! In this new panel, he illustrated one of the most iconic songs ever recorded, Imagine by John Lennon.

It's probably impossible not to read the cartoon and have the song not pop into your head. It's now probably going to get stuck in your head for the rest of the day, but hey, at least it's a catchy tune!

Sing it with me, "Imagine there's no heaven ..." (Love this song? Did you know that the lyric and concept came from Lennon's wife Yoko Ono? But Lennon said that, "in those days I was more selfish, more macho and omitted to mention her contribution." Read more about Imagine in this article by Eddie Deezen, "Imagine: John Lennon's Signature Song.")

If you wonder who the guy named "Milk" in the fourth from last panel, that's San Francisco supervisor Harvey Milk, who was the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in the United States in 1977. Milk was assassinated in 1978, just 11 months after taking office.

The woman named Anna in the third from last panel is Russian journalist, writer, and human rights activist named Anna Politkovskaya. She reported about the Chechen conflict and published several books critical of the current Russian government. In 2006, Politkovskaya was shot and killed in her apartment complex. Her murder remained unsolved until today.

The meaning of Imagine is a hotly debated topic, but Pablo noted in his blog, "This is NOT an anti-religion/atheist propaganda comic. The comic and the song (at least as I understand it) [try] to communicate that no matter your faith, we should all share the world in peace ... As silly as that sounds."

5 Fascinating Facts: Echidna

Alex

Quick: what mammal is covered with spikes, lays eggs, has a four-headed penis, and no nipples?

The answer is the echidna, one of the strangest animals that exist on Earth today. And to celebrate this bit of mammalian weirdness, here are Neatorama's Five Fascinating Facts about Echidnas:

1. Echidnas Can Control Their Spines

Photo: Vmenkov/Wikipedia

Echidnas are covered with fur and spiky spines. These spines are modified hairs, similar to that of the porcupines. There are tiny muscle bundles connected to the base of each spine so the echidna can control the spine's movement and direction.

An echidna erects its spines for protection (like the picture above), to anchor itself against a log, to help it climb, and to help upright itself after it has fallen or placed on its back. It cannot, however, throw or eject its spines as the legend said.

2. Baby Echidnas is Called a Puggle and It's Incredibly Cute!

A mom echidna lays a single leathery egg in her pouch, then carries it for about ten days before it hatches. The baby echidna, called a puggle, is born hairless and spineless - but with formidable claws.

As the puggle grows, it develops its covering of fur and spines. After two months, its mom would evict it out of the pouch, because, you know, it's not fun carrying something with spiky spines in your pouch.

The cute puggle above is a 30-day-old echidna born in captivity at the Australia Zoo, to proud parents Tippy and Pickle. You can view more pics of the yet-to-be-named puggle over at ZooBorns.

More puggle cuteness: this one named Beau the orphaned echidna is from the Taronga Zoo:

Anatomy of a Turtle

Alex

Forget everything you've read in your high school biology text book! THIS is the correct anatomy of a turtle.

Between the carapace (the upper shell) and the plastron (that's the lower shell that encases the belly) of your favorite chelonian (that's fancy Latin word for, you guessed it, turtles) are 32 individual items including hoses, gaskets and screws! Without any digestive system, it's amazing how turtles could poop so much (just take it from my personal experience, turtles poop. A lot. If you don't find poop in your turtle's cage, perhaps its eating said poop.)

Our pal Adam Koford (@apelad) tweeted this out, saying that it'll make a great coloring exercise.

And for all you literalists, relax! It's just the schematics of the cute Polaris Turtle pool cleaner.

Dancing Queen of the Bus Stop

Alex

iPod? Check.

Headphones? Check.

Music? Check.

Having the time of your life? Check, check, and ... CHECK for hidden cameras if you're dancing by yourself while waiting for the bus.

Thirty five-year old secretary Ellie Cole of Eastleigh, England, became a minor Internet celebrity when this video clip, titled "Eastleigh's Got Talent," went viral.

Back in April, YouTuber Jane Rowland noticed a woman dancing across the street from her cafe, J's Corner Cafe, on Bishopstoke Road, Eastleigh. So she took out her camera, videotaped Cole tapping her toes and wagging her fingers. Her partner Nigel Baker, a former DJ, set it to the soundtrack of ABBA's Dancing Queen. Baker told the Daily Mail, "I chose a soundtrack of Dancing Queen by ABBA as it seemed so appropriate, though I had no idea what she was really humming."

Cole later admitted that she was listening to Alesha Dixon's hit "Knock Down" (Alesha later praised Cole's moves as "brilliant"). Cole said this about her dancing routine, "My mum thinks I'm bonkers. But I'm a normal 34-year-old woman who just loves to dance."

Rowland's video clip went viral (after it was mercilessly copied by other YouTubers - a sad but incredibly common state of affairs, but that's another story), and writers for AH Men and director Lynne Paris took notice. They've invited Cole to perform on stage for a one-time performance last weekend.

You are the dancing queen, girl!

These My Family Stickers are Definitely TMI

Alex

We've got some pretty neat My Family decals on the NeatoShop (I'm particularly proud of the My Zombie Family and the Extended My Zombie Family stickers by Adam Koford), but we're still pretty amazed at this little bit of genius, as photographed by imgur user shannonbtweet.

Now that's a busy woman! With quintuplets and a dog, we're not sure whether the dad is in jail on purpose. Maybe it's easier to be incarcerated than to have to raise five mewling babies (kidding! No hate mails, please).

House Plumbed with Beer

Alex

All right, all right. It's obviously a viral campaign. But it's a dream of mine, so bear with me, mmkay?

New Zealand beer Tui commissioned a team of pranksters to route the plumbing of their friend's house so beer came out of every tap. Kitchen sink? Beer. Bathroom tap? Also beer. The guys wired their house with hidden cameras to catch the unsuspecting friend's reaction.

The friend, a man named Russ, came home with his wife and dog, and went to the kitchen. His wife noticed the kitchen tap dripping - but it wasn't water that came out. Rather, a dark and strange liquid ...

Now, you'd think that Russ' first instinct was to take a bath in beer (like the beer bath in the Starkenberger Brewery in Austria), but instead, he decided to investigate. Watch the man's reaction in this YouTube clip - Thanks Cole Stryker!

Well played, Kiwis. Now, when can you come to my house?

Oh, and if you think that my dream to have beer piped straight into the house is strange, just know that physicist Niels Bohr, who won the Nobel Prize in Physics, got Carlsberg to pipe beer straight from the brewery to his house. I don't know what's better, winning the Nobel Prize or having a perpetual supply of beer in the house.
