Someone explained to me that the easiest way to think about data is to think about hairy data - and what scientist hasn't gotten hairy data at some point in their career?
So data is like hair: technically, it's countable. You can count hair on a person's head, but who really wants to? So it's considered a mass noun. Data's the same way :)
