Dumb and Dumber Presented as a Drama is Funnier Than the Real Thing

And for those who found themselves smirking at the screen whenever they were informed of a "very special episode" coming up, this clip is a recut of the trailer for Dumb and Dumber. A very special recut. One in which the movie is supposed to be a drama about two brave underdogs overcoming the odds. Mashable does this idea justice. Even the bad bangs are put to good use. Russian Artist's Dolls are So Realistic it's Frightening

Michael Zajkov is a Russian artist who crafts these chillingly realistic dolls' faces and bodies out of polymer clay. The dolls' eyes are handpainted German glass, and their hair is French mohair. The combination results in the creations pictured here, which I'd never allow in my house for fear I'd catch sight of one in my peripheral vision and have a heart attack. But your mileage may vary, as they say!

See a huge grouping of photographs of these stunning dolls in every stage of production at Michael Zajkov’s Instagram account.

What a Trainwreck: Vintage Photos of Steam Train Accidents

Steam locomotive was the original method of train power. The first steam train ran on February 21, 1804, its high-pressure steam operation developed by British inventor Richard Trevithick. The historic route ran from Merthyr Tydfil, Wales to Abercynon in South Wales.

The United States relied upon exports from Britain until 1830, when the first U.S.-built steam train, Baltimore and Ohio Railroad's Tom Thumb, was demonstrated. Mainly due to
the high costs of maintenance of the steam engines, by the middle of the twentieth century, electric and diesel took over the industry.

The linked grouping of photographs documents steam train accidents during their years of operation. A few pictures are featured here; see the entire collection at Vintage Everyday.

Shots of NYC as "Ghost Town" During Blizzard 2016

Central Park

As of this morning New York City streets, previously closed, have reopened. Public transportation is being restored as the city rallies after a dangerous blizzard, the largest since 1869, dumped 26.8 inches of snow on Central Park, and over 30 inches on outerlying areas.

Many news articles have referred to the city, when shut down and under a travel ban, as resembling a "ghost town." During that time many residents took to social media, posting photographs of these most quiet and unusual circumstances in New York City.

Posted here are some examples from Instagram and Twitter. Search under hashtags blizzardblizzard2016 and nyc to see more amazing shots like these.

Monkey Adopts Puppy, Cuteness Ensues

Image: Facebook

An unlikely bond between a
rhesus macaque monkey and a puppy warmed hearts and brought out curious crowds in Erode, India earlier this month. The monkey apparently took the stray pup under her wing and off she went.

The macaque made sure her adopted baby ate well, and kept a tight hold on him as she traveled both on the ground and up in the treetops. Locals who found the pair endearing set food out for them and watched as the monkey had the puppy eat before her.

There are now unconfirmed reports that local officials may have taken the puppy away from mama monkey, which, though a sad parting, is likely better for the puppy in the long run.

See additional photos — including one of the monkey flying through the trees with the puppy under her arm — and read more on the story here.

Types of Motivation

Grant Snider of Incidental Comics takes a look at motivation in his latest. All of us have experienced at least one of these mental methods for lighting a fire beneath us. Sometimes giving ourselves that first push can involve a lot of interior discussion and mind wrangling. But after all is said and done, it feels wonderful to have accomplished, whether the item is big or small.

Southern California Fisherman Hooks Great White Shark

YouTube Link

A man fishing at the San Clemente pier was shocked to find that the struggling catch on the other end of his fishing line was a 6-foot long great white shark.

Also present at the pier was Penny Novak, who saw the fisherman and recorded part of a fifteen-minute long effort to release the shark once its presence was revealed at the end of the line. Said Novak via NBC Los Angeles,

“When we looked over the edge, there it was. Its head was fully out of the water, its mouth was open. It was just like something out of a movie. Then finally, it went under the water for a little bit. We all thought maybe it died, and then all of the sudden it came back up and we heard like a big, loud crunch, and then it like moved around a little bit and broke free and then took off.”

Witness the Sweet Friendship Between a Man and a Young Rescue Elephant

Six-year-old Kham La, the juvenile elephant shown in the video above, is a resident of Elephant Nature Park in the Chang Mai province of Thailand. Darrick, a tractor driver at the site, has become Kham La's favorite human. Whenever she spots Darrick, the young elephant makes a beeline to him and, under the watchful eyes of her herd, she gets attention lavished upon her in the form of pets and softly spoken greetings.

Kham La had an unfortunate past of being taken from her mom and subjected to being "broken,” a way to make elephants submit to human demands, and subsequently trained as a performer. Thankfully, the youngster was rescued and is now free to roam (and choose friends) as she sees fit. What a wonderful ending to what could have been a tragic story! Via Slate

A Look Inside the San Diego Humane Society Kitten Nursery

YouTube Link

This footage, shot by the owner of Cole and Marmalade, is of San Diego Humane Society’s Kitten Nursery. There, orphaned kittens are given around-the-clock care by an attentive staff. The nursery was established in 2008, and provided a desperately needed refuge for these animals, who otherwise would have been subject to euthanasia.
