That's My Captain, Jean-Luc Picard

Photo: Twitter

If you don't recognize the names and faces then the two people involved here are Sir Patrick Stewart and LeVar Burton. Stewart and Burton both played lead characters on Stark Trek: The Next Generation. Stewart was Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Burton was Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge. If you still don't recognize them by now, well then you are a lost soul. Star Trek guy with a VISOR ring a bell?

In the image above you can see that Burton retweeting a picture of Stewart getting tangled in Christmas lights. It's good to see that the actors still have a friendly rapport and that there characters still mean something to them. Star Trek geeks, rejoice!

Today Is Pretend to Be a Time Traveler Day

The only rule is that you can't participate if you're a real time traveler. This is just a game for us normals. Some suggestions on what to do:

- Greet people by referring to things that don’t yet exist or haven’t existed for a long time. Example: "Have you penetrated the atmosphere lately?" "What spectrum will today’s broadcast be in?" and "Your king must be a kindly soul!" [...]

- Walk up to random people and say "WHAT YEAR IS THIS?" and when they tell you, get quiet and then say "Then there’s still time!" and run off.

- Stand in front of a statue (any statue, really), fall to your knees, and yell "NOOOOOOOOO" [...]

- Airplanes are terrifying.  Also, carry on conversations with televisions for a while.

BirdBuggy

(YouTube link)

What a pampered parrot! His owner built a vehicle he can control with a joystick, and motor around by himself. If you're impressed with that, wait until you see the computerized autonomous docking ability. See, parrots have a tendency to leave their Birdbuggies just anywhere, so this contraption takes itself home! -via Viral Viral Videos

Fins out all about the Birdbuggy at the project page. Link -Thanks, Andrew!

Giant Game Boy

Photo: MaboroshiTira

Deviantartist MaboroshiTira really likes Game Boys. So much so that she built a giant cardboard one, I don't really know for what purpose but it's still cool. No it doesn't work, you can't play Dragon Warrior 3 on it, but all the buttons are push-able and the on/off switch and volume dial both turn.

If you could play with a giant (working) Game Boy, what game would you play?

14 Terrible Christmas Presents For 14 Terrible People

Sometimes you buy Christmas presents out of obligation, like the annual name-drawing at your workplace, or some such event. What to get when you don't care to send the very best? Jill Harness came up with some fine suggestions, as long as you keep your tongue in your cheek. These gifts are all readily available, and will surely point out the recipient's faults in a public way. However, some of them might actually be useful to someone you love, but only if they request the product. Shown here is a set of garters for wannabe gangsters who want to strut around with low-slung pants, but can't keep their jeans in place. The rest are just as funny! Link

The Moustache Trainer and Other Brilliant Patents for the Moustache Enthusiast

As we near the end of a glorious Movember, remember that we did not always have this special month. In a lost, golden age, every month was Movember. Manly facial hair was the norm, not the exception. In the old days, moustache engineers devised great inventions to advance facial hair development, such as Louis Auguste Allard's 1889 moustache trainer. You can read about this and twelve other brilliant moustache inventions at the link.

Celebrating the Christmas of the Past

English Heritage has some tips for celebrating Christmas in the Tudor and Victorian styles, if you want to be more traditional than everyone around you. For example, a Tudor-style Christmas would start with putting one person in charge of Christmas and all its parties.

If you want your celebrations to go with a bang, appoint a 'Lord of Misrule'. These were usually minor members of the household appointed to run the festivities. Henry VII is recorded as having both a 'Lord of Misrule' and an 'Abbot of Unreason' one year!

During Victorian times, families would play Snapdragon.

You'll need nerves of steel (and possibly a fire extinguisher) if you want to play any Victorian Christmas games. 'Snapdragon' involved making a big pile of dried fruit, covering it in brandy then setting it alight. Then in the dark, the aim was for everyone to pick up a piece of fruit before the fire went out. Let's hope nobody played it with long sleeves!

There's more, including links to some very old recipes and modern events, at English Heritage. Link -via Nag on the Lake
