Sculptural Collages Cut From Antique Books

Destroying an antique book seems like a shame, but if the book in question is being turned into such an incredibly cool work of art then maybe it's a worthwhile endeavor after all.

Here's how crafty book lover Alexander Korzer-Robinson creates these wonderfully intricate collages:

Alexander Korzer-Robinson delves into antiquarian books, cutting out everything except the images on each page, leaving them in their proper order. The element of randomness inherent in these pages-deep collages is part of what attracts him to the medium. ”By using pre-existing media as a starting point,” he writes, “certain boundaries are set by the material, which I aim to transform through my process.

Doctor Who Goes to Broadway

I would definitely go see this musical -particularly because The Doctor seems to be based on David Tennant's version and he's my favorite.

Ellen Loves Macklemore

I have been infatuated with the music Macklemore has been producing ever since I first heard the song Wings. I like him because there is actual content in his music, not the empty-calorie music that modern pop-culture seems to be obsessed with. Oh Wiz Khalifa you have catchy choruses about... partying all day. How original. Bieber, you like girls? No way. Ms. Swift, I am glad that you are informing me that we are ever never getting back together but can you be a little more constructive with your feedback?

Finally someone who isn't afraid to actually say something with their music. Whether you agree (I hope) or disagree (you are entitled to that) with gay marriage, or whether you like rap or not - that's fine - but you have to respect how creatively and passionately he delivers his message.

Ellen loved it too, so there's that. Check out Macklemore's new album The Heist.

The song he is preforming is called Same Love, and you can check out the official music video here.

Oops My Head Fell Off

Magician Rich Ferguson "aka The Ice Breaker" is out on the streets of San Luis Obispo, CA for Halloween scaring people with a pretty impressive trick. I am not positive how he does it, I think something to do with stilts, but if I stumbled on this unexpectedly like these people do- I would be freaking out too.

Coming Soon: A Very Bright Comet

Astronomers have discovered a new comet that should be visible from Earth in 2013, and shine even brighter than a full moon at its peak!

The new comet, named C/2012 S1 (ISON) was found by the International Scientific Optical Network (ISON) in Russia on 21 September when astronomers Vitali Nevski and Artyom Novichonok captured it on CCD images taken through a 0.4-metre reflector. Its near-parabolic orbit suggests that it has arrived fresh from the Oort Cloud, a vast zone of icy objects orbiting the Sun, pristine remnants of the formation of the Solar System.

C/2012 S1 currently resides in the northwestern corner of Cancer. At magnitude +18 it is too dim to be seen visually but it will be within the reach of experienced amateur astronomers with CCD equipment in the coming months as it brightens. It is expected to reach binocular visibility by late summer 2013 and a naked eye object in early November of that year. Northern hemisphere observers are highly favoured. Following its peak brightness in late November it will remain visible without optical aid until mid-January 2014.

Better write those dates down when you get your new calendars for 2013. Read more about the comet at Astronomy Now. Link -via Metafilter

The 25 Magic Words Of American Television

How do you come up with a "new idea" for a television show? It's really simple. You just take the list of magic words and combine a couple of them. You can use your combination as a title or as a premise. NPR posted this, inspired by the new series Mob Doctor and Revolution.

MOB
DOCTOR
LAW
JUSTICE
CUPCAKE
CHICAGO
FORCE
911
STORM
REVOLUTION
HEAT
FOREVER
TEAM
PETS
AMERICA
CELEBRITY
ALASKA
TRUCKER
LOVE
MYSTERY

How many shows have already used this list? Too many to count! And you can count on more to come. Metafilter is already working on Cupcake Justice. Link -via Metafilter

Here’s Why We Can’t Get Jobs

Unemployment can make it harder to get a job. That sounds strange, but it's a truism in the placement and recruiting industry. Once you spend any amount of time without a job, getting one at all become more difficult. Even though corporation have unfilled job openings, they tend to not hire the unemployed.

According to 36 percent of recruiters, it becomes “difficult” for an applicant to find a job if he or she is unemployed for as little as six months. Twenty-one percent say that spells of joblessness shorter than six months could kill your hiring prospects. In short, “unemployment can lead to being unemployable.”

In a slack labor market, many workers survive by hopping from job to job. But even that makes an applicant look bad. The survey reports that a 55-year-old with steady employment will find it easier to find a new job than a 30-year-old who has left a company before one year of work. And that’s despite the fact that 70 percent of recruiters say that candidates in their 30s are the easiest group to place.

I think I'm starting to see why these job opening go unfilled. Maybe we need some "new blood" in these recruiting positions. Link

Wheel Clamp Man: Hero or Villain?

A caped crusader who named himself the Wheel Clamp Man found his calling when he got clamped one day. Now, the mystery man with a Zapata mustache and green leotard roams the city of Perth, Western Australia, with an angle grinder to remove the wheel clamps by his nemesis Parking Meter Man.

Wheel Clamp Man has reportedly been helping forlorn motorists for several weeks in Perth, Western Australia. He was tracked down by a weekend newspaper, but refused to disclose his name and said he was inspired by England’s Angle-grinder Man, who wore a blue leotard and removed clamps in London and Kent almost a decade ago. He wore the costume to avoid being filmed on closed circuit cameras and asked drivers before removing the metal restraints.

“I’m helping people out,” he told Perth’s Sunday Times newspaper. “I don’t feel I’m damaging property.

“The amount of money these companies make off innocent people is insane. Where does that money go?

“Not into car parks or safer streets. It goes into their pocket.”

The police department, however, considers him a menace and urges the public to turn him in: Link

What do you think, Neatoramanauts? Is the Wheel Clamp Man a hero or a villain?
