As amusing as the story behind it, it's a bunch of bunk. That's too ornate for a Roman guardsman's spear. I'd imagine extreme atmospheres don’t leave much room for its occupants to develop, when the best they can do is survive in the niche situation they are in. All living things survive off each other in one way or another, and it makes you wonder how many are required in one area for them all to exist.
