Ah, the battle of Lundy's Lane, one of the bloodiest battles ever fought on Canadian soil. Did President Madison ever pose in front of a "Mission Accomplished" banner?

I ask because the United States set out in 1812 to drive the British from North America and claim the territories of Upper and Lower Canada. They even thought that Canadians would greet them as liberators and help them, and that the invasion, according to Thomas Jefferson, would be a "Mere matter of marching". And every Canadian schoolkid knows how THAT worked out.

There just HAD to be a Mission Accomplished banner at the end of this, please say there was!

Every year my wife says, hey, lets pop over to Stratford and see the Swan parade! And every year I say, good idea, I think it was last weekend! And this year is no different.

We always played by our own rules anyway, we're not purists.

Our house rules are that anything is acceptable so long as it sounds like an actual word, and your explanation is sufficiently entertaining and/or convincing.

Basically the other players agree on whether or not you've adequately entertained them while making your case for a non-word. It makes for some creative and animated storytelling.

I think we had a point deduction for words not in the dictionary, but it's been a while since we played anyway.

I've never really thought of the hotels as castles, just fancy-pants hotels.

They're known as railway hotels because they were originally built along the Trans-Canada Railway for affluent travellers to stay in.

Last year charges were laid against someone in Ontario for dying a few hundred chicks for Easter.

Also, a quick Google search reveals this to be illegal in numerous US states. I think because it leads to impulse buys by people who haven't considered what they are going to do with a live chicken afterwards. Then some rescue organization is going to have to run around collecting half-starved chicks in the weeks following Easter.

Kind of like how rabbit rescue organizations are run off their feet about three months after Easter as people come to terms with the fact that rabbits don't actually like children, and are neither docile nor cuddly. Trust me, I have a house rabbit, I wouldn't recommend it to a household with children, for the rabbit's sake.

Way to go. Buy a stuffed rabbit and a stuffed pastel-coloured chick, and leave the livestock to the farmers!

I had to do the internship thing. I hated it. Even in my early career I thought that agreeing to work for free devalues the work, creates an impossible situation for people who can't afford to work for free, and is ripe for abuse.

Now, 15 years later, my company has interns occasionally. I try to make sure they are given tasks that will benefit them and add to their experience, not just crappy coffee/cleanup/archiving work. If we have an intern in, I try to schedule my editing jobs so that there is time for an intern to slow things down a little bit with questions and what-not. Within reason, of course, I also have to think of the client. But i'm not usually directly responsible for interns, so they still end up sorting tapes sometimes.

Generally I feel that even an inexperienced worker should get some compensation for their efforts, and I usually lobby for them to receive, at the very least, some kind of honorarium.

@max, btw unpaid internships are perfectly legal in Canada, do your homework before posting!

@Jollyboy you're right, but the pain scale is pretty helpful if you're monitoring the progress of something. The point is to ask more than once, to see the degree to which pain is increasing or decreasing. It doesn't give you solid facts, it gives you a relative comparison. Just like pulse strength and pupil response and your sadly hysterical responses to questions like "Do you know what day it is?" "Do you know where you are?"

Don't worry, Cakewrecks only picks on professional cakes. Or at least, cakes made by someone paid to make cakes. Or homemade Cakewrecks tribute cakes, she likes those.

I think she once accidentally posted a homemade cake and got some harsh feedback from the cake baker.

I've seen both the 1972 and 1957 versions of the Quaker logo here in Canada.

I don't have any Quaker products in front of me, but I think maybe the 1972 logo is currently used as a small logo up near the top or on the back near the small print, while the 1957 gets prime real estate up front.

And what about the inappropriate standing ovation?

A standing O should be reserved for the very best performances; the kind that make you want to leap to your feet.

Just because someone is giving me a dirty look for not standing, doesn't mean that I should feel obliged to give a standing ovation for a mediocre performance.

Well, he doesn't understand the lifecycle of a meme, but that's okay. He's full of optimism and he put me in a good mood. Again.
I say we take him up on the challenge!
