Unless you have some serious impacted wax issues, the skin inside your ear canal is constantly replenishing itself, growing outwards in a twisting motion, pushing your ear wax along with it. On other words, ear wax makes its way out naturally all on its own. Best to just leave it alone. Using cotton buds or yes, even the ear picks used by these people gives the appearance of removing wax as you get a bit of wax on the tip, but in reality it tends to push far more wax further down into the ear canal, making it more difficult for it to come out on its own.
"Five years ago, when the Japanese government announced that ear cleaning would no longer be considered a medical procedure, thus making medical licenses unnecessary for ear cleaners..."
Say no more. The number 1 cause for suing an audiologist who IS qualified to remove ear wax is injury from a wax removal procedure. This is impacted wax, an outer ear infection, and a perforated ear drum, just WAITING to happen.
"The healthiest ears I've ever seen have belonged to Asian ladies," Sceats says, "because they have this tradition of looking after their ears."
Wax free does not necessarily = healthy. Wax, as long as it is not excessive to the point that it is impacting is normal.
Not just Americans. This sounds like a more generally Western thing. People ask this in Australia too but as kkirkpat said, "what do you do" is a good, and popular alternative. And for the record, I don't mind when people ask me at all :P I am just about to finish my very last week ever of study after 3 degrees and 7 years at university, and guess who already has an awesome job lined up bitches! :D
Good points about stereotype threat, Ryan S. Research has also shown that stereotype threat plays a large role in the apparent differences between the IQs of different races. While it can't be entirely controlled for, it's best to try to avoid possible primers for stereotype threat by asking for demographic information such as race after the test is taken.
Also, it should be noted that the particular findings of this study can only be generalised to the target population of the test i.e. children between the ages of 12 and 13 years.
Perhaps if he hadn't relied on a pseudoscientific anti-cancer diet instead of surgery to treat his cancer when it was in its early stages, he could have survived longer.
"The people of Samaria must bear the consequences of their guilt because they rebelled against their God. They will be killed by an invading army, their little ones dashed to death against the ground, their pregnant women ripped open by swords." (Hosea 13:16)
