My guess is that it's for accounting books or anything where you need a numbered list. You just rotate the numbers and then roll over an inkpad and roll down a sheet of paper. VOILA! a numbered list.

I got my bf a pretty sweet tie pin since he has to wear ties to work every day... it's from etsy and it's made out of antique watch parts... I figured he'd like something to spice up his day... and he can pretend it's a stealth camera or something.
