@ "FormerCop"

Is your point that the decision of these officers should not be judged because they had such a small window of opportunity? Police should have it ingrained in them that an individual's freedom should ALWAYS be taken into account when making judgement calls. The ends should never justify the means. I am sure that there will be more than one lawsuit filed over the violation of individual's civil rights in this case, and the results of those cases will be the ultimate judgement of the officer's actions.

"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." This quote is generally attributed to Benjamin Franklin, but whatever the source, it is true. People who want to give away their liberty and freedom to be "safe" should just stay home in bed with the covers over their heads. I (and most Americans) would rather risk a little to retain our essential liberties.

All these people who say it's no big deal because it's "just an inconvenience" are all to quick to give away MY constitutionally-protected freedom. If the cops stop you and ask you if you mind being searched, and you consent, that's your right and your choice. Don't take MY choice away from me please.

I don't think this passes the litmus test for probable cause. What if next time police get a "reliable" tip that a criminal is inside a place of business. Do the police then have the right to handcuff everyone in there and question them or search their person and possessions?

Slippery slope and all...

What's interesting is that the photo illustration for the blog post here on Neatorama does NOT depict an alien, but an android (an incomplete one at that). This is the not-quite-finished android Lal, the daughter of Lt. Cmdr. Data of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The exterior of the android was specifically not complete as Data's intention was to allow Lal to select his/her gender and appearance.

I remember getting inoculations in grade school and when I was in boot camp by a similar device that used compressed air to inject the vaccine into the skin. What's so different about this device?

This "catholic" school is not part of the Roman Catholic church. It is run by a religious order of priests called the Society of St. Pius X. This group was excommunicated from the Church because they refuse to follow Church doctrine. A school run by the Catholic Church would not have a problem playing against a team fielding a girl on the team.

When I first heard there was going to be a Dark Shadows movie I was excited to tell my mother, because she LOVED watching the TV series years ago. When I saw Tim Burton had turned it into a farce, I just didn't bother telling her.

I don't quite get taking story lines that many people loved and turning them into a farce or spoof of the original idea like this movie and others, (21 Jump Street, Starsky and Hutch, and others).

@Greyman

It's true that smoking around your kids is bad, but it's not the same as lighting one up for them. That would be the equivalent act in this case, making the child actively participate in something that is potentially dangerous to her health.

The other damage this woman is doing to her child is increasing the chance that her little girl will grow up without a mother. At the very least she will cause her daughter to have a distorted sense of self-esteem, as the mother clearly has esteem issues.

Yes, I pre-rinse my dishes. I don't bother to get them spotless, but if I leave any large pieces of food on the dishes, either they stay stuck to the dish or get spread around to other dishes. Do I waste water by doing this? Not really, just think of what it would cost not only in water but the extra energy to run the dishwasher to re-wash dishes that didn't come out clean the first time.

It's a gauge that was mounted on the film cameras for Star Trek: The Original Series. It was used to measure how far back and forth to pitch the camera for scenes where the Enterprise was under attack. Crew also used the numbers to decide how far back and forth they needed to lean/fall for the effect.
